Solar Return Chart Calculator

A solar return chart is a chart cast for the moment each year when the Sun gets back to the exact degree and minute it held when you were born. Astrologers read it as a map of the year from one birthday to the next. Enter your birth date, time and place below: the calculator finds that moment to the second and shows the rising sign, the house of the Sun, the Moon and the ruling planet of your year.

Your solar return chart

Your birth
Your birthday this time

The moment of the return is the same everywhere. The place changes the rising sign and houses.

Example, not your chart: a birth on July 15, 1990, 7:30 a.m., in New York City, New York, USA, solar return for 2027. Enter your own birth details above to see yours.

Your Sun returns to ♋︎ Cancer 22°44′ on July 15, 2027, 6:04:29 a.m. in New York City (UTC−4). That is on your birthday. On the clock in New York City that is 1 h 26 min earlier than your birth time. Spending your birthday somewhere else? Add that city above: the moment stays the same, the rising sign and houses change.

The year at a glance

PointYour 2027 returnHow astrologers read it
Return ascendant♋︎ Cancer 27°07′

The tone of the year: how you meet things and come across. Its degree falls in your natal 12th house (solitude, hidden matters, retreat), an area read as stirred up this year.
Sun's house12th houseWhere your effort goes this year: solitude, hidden matters, retreat. Most astrologers read this first.
Return Moon♐︎ Sagittarius 17°09′

The return is the moment the Sun reaches the exact longitude it had when you were born, found to the second and shown in the time zone of the place you pick. Houses: Placidus (Whole Sign above the polar circles). Tropical zodiac, astronomy-engine ephemeris, cities from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). Without a birth time we show the window the return falls in and the planets' signs, without a rising sign or houses.

What a solar return is

The Sun moves about one degree a day and goes around the zodiac once a year. Once a year it reaches the exact spot it held when you were born, to the arc-minute, and that instant is your solar return. Your Sun is always in the same sign and degree in a return chart. Everything else changes: the Moon and planets have moved on, and the rising sign and houses depend on the minute of the return and on where you are.

Astrologers read the chart for the twelve months until the next return. It works alongside your birth chart, the same way transits do: the birth chart describes you, and the return chart describes the year you are walking into.

How to read a solar return chart

  1. The house of the Sun. Most astrologers look here first. The house the Sun lands in is read as where your effort and attention go this year: the 10th for work and reputation, the 4th for home and family, the 7th for partners. The calculator names it in the first row of "The year at a glance".
  2. The return ascendant and its ruler. The rising sign of the return chart is read as the tone of the year, how you meet things. The planet that rules that sign becomes the ruler of the year, and its house is a second focus. If the return ascendant falls in a different house of your birth chart, that natal house is read as stirred up too.
  3. The Moon. The return Moon is read as what you need to feel settled this year, and its house as where you look for it. The Moon moves fast, so it changes sign and house from one year to the next.
  4. Planets on the angles. A planet within a few degrees of the ascendant, descendant, midheaven or IC is read as loud all year. The calculator lists any within 3°.
  5. Return planets on your birth chart. Last, check which return planets sit right on a point of your birth chart. The calculator lists the ones within 2°.

The houses themselves are explained one by one on our 12 houses page, and the planet's meaning in each sign on the pages linked from the calculator.

Where you spend your birthday

The moment of the return is the same everywhere on Earth. What changes with the place is the rising sign, the midheaven and the houses, because they depend on which part of the sky is on the horizon where you stand. The planets' signs, their aspects to each other and the return planets on your birth chart stay the same.

Most astrologers cast the chart for the place where you are at the moment of the return. Astro-Seek asks for the city you will be in, Astrodienst lets you change the reference place, and some people travel for their birthday to get a different chart. Others keep the birthplace whatever happens. Enter a city in "Where you'll be on your birthday" and the calculator casts the chart there and also tells you what the birthplace would have given.

Solar return without a birth time

You still get most of it. Without a time we know your natal Sun only to within the day you were born, a span of about one degree, so the calculator shows the 24-hour window your return falls in and the signs of the planets during it. The rising sign and houses need the exact minute: inside that window every sign rises once. If you can find your birth time on a birth certificate or hospital record, you can get the whole chart.

Why your solar return is not always on your birthday

The calendar year is 365 or 366 days, and the Sun's year is about 365 days, 5 hours and 49 minutes. Leap days keep the two close but not equal, so the return moment slides about six hours later each year and then jumps back after a February 29. It lands on your birthday or a day either side, and very rarely two days early.

In our count of 4,000 random births in four US cities, with every return up to 2025 (231,586 returns in all), 41% fell on a different calendar day than the birthday: 33% before it (two days early in 0.6% of returns) and 7% on the day after. The day before gets more common with age: between 1901 and 2099 the calendar year averages about 11 minutes longer than the Sun's year, so the return creeps earlier by that much every year.

40 to 5940.9%3.6%

If you were born on February 29, in three years out of four your return falls on February 28 or March 1, and the calculator tells you which. In our sample, 205 of 265 such returns fell on February 28 and 60 on March 1.

4,000 random birth dates and times from 1930 to 2005 in New York, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles, every return from the first birthday to 2025, each dated in the city of birth.

Why each year's chart looks so different

Because the return slides about six hours later on the clock every year, the sky over you turns about a quarter of the way around between one return and the next. In our count the return ascendant moved a median of 76° from one year to the next, and landed in the same sign as your natal ascendant in only 8% of years. The house of the Sun steps back three houses in 66% of years and two or four in the rest, so most people see it in a different house every birthday. Four returns later the clock time is back within about an hour, so that year's rising sign usually lands near the one from four years before.

The Moon has its own rhythm. It sits in the same sign as your natal Moon in about 8% of returns, roughly one year in twelve. Every 19 years the Sun and Moon nearly repeat their pattern, a cycle known since antiquity as the Metonic cycle: in our sample the Moon at a return was within 5° of where it stood 19 years earlier 72% of the time.

How exact the moment is

We narrow the moment down until the Sun sits on your natal position to a fraction of a second, so the seconds you see come from the calculation itself. Two good ephemerides still disagree slightly. We checked four births against Swiss Ephemeris, run on Astrodienst's own swetest service: the moments differed by 6 to 36 seconds. The ascendant turns about 1° every four minutes, so half a minute moves it by a fraction of a degree and changes the chart only when a planet or cusp sits right on a boundary.

Questions about solar returns

What does my solar return chart mean?

It is read as a picture of the year from this birthday to the next. Astrologers start with the house the Sun falls in (where your effort goes), then the rising sign and its ruling planet (the tone of the year), then the Moon (what you need to feel settled). It sits alongside your birth chart and adds the year on top of it.

Is my birthday my solar return?

Almost. The return is the exact moment the Sun reaches its birth position, and it falls on your birthday or a day either side, very rarely two days early. In our count of 231,586 returns, 41% landed on another calendar day, more often the day before as people get older.

How do I calculate my solar return?

You need your birth date, birth time and birthplace, the year you want and the place you will be on your birthday. The calculator above finds the moment the Sun returns to its natal longitude and casts a chart for that moment and place. Done by hand, you would look up the Sun's position in an ephemeris and interpolate to the minute.

What should I look for in my solar return chart?

The house of the Sun, the return ascendant and the planet that rules it, the Moon's sign and house, any planet close to an angle, and return planets sitting right on points of your birth chart. The "Year at a glance" table in the calculator lists these in that order.

What does "solar return day" mean?

It is the day of your solar return, usually your birthday. "Happy solar return" is an astrologer's way of saying happy birthday, and the tradition reads the return day as a fresh start for the year ahead.

Does it matter where I spend my birthday?

For the houses and rising sign, yes: they are cast for the place where you are at the moment of the return. The planets and the moment itself stay the same. Some astrologers prefer the birthplace, so the calculator can show both.

What does Jupiter conjunct the solar return ascendant mean?

Jupiter is read as growth and luck, and a planet on the ascendant colors the whole year. Together, astrologers read the pairing as a year of optimism, travel or learning and more confidence in how you come across. The calculator lists any planet within 3° of an angle.

Can I get a free solar return chart?

Yes. The calculator on this page is free and runs in your browser; nothing you enter is sent anywhere. It gives the exact moment, the chart, a double wheel against your birth chart and the dates of your return in the years around it.
