Your calculation, step by step

  1. Local time to Universal Time. In New York City, New York, USA on July 15, 1990, clocks ran at UTC−4, daylight saving time (IANA zone America/New_York). 07:30 + 4 hr = 11:30 UTC.
  2. Sidereal time at Greenwich for that moment: 7 h 02 m 15 s, or 105.56° (1 sidereal hour = 15°).
  3. Add your longitude (74.01° W; west counts as minus): 105.56° − 74.01° = 31.55°. This is the RAMC, the stretch of sky crossing your meridian.
  4. Ascendant. Asc = atan2(cos RAMC, −(sin RAMC · cos ε + tan φ · sin ε)), with your latitude φ = 40.7° N and the tilt of the Earth's axis ε = 23.442°. Result: 133.98° of the zodiac, so Leo 13°59′ (each sign covers 30°, counted from 0° Aries).
  5. Midheaven. MC = atan2(sin RAMC, cos RAMC · cos ε) = 33.80° of the zodiac, so Taurus 3°48′.
  6. Sun and Moon at 11:30 UTC from the astronomy-engine ephemeris: Sun 112.73° of the zodiac, so Cancer 22°44′; Moon 22.96° of the zodiac, so Aries 22°58′.

Tropical zodiac, as in Western astrology. Time zone and daylight saving time come from the IANA time zone database for the city you pick, including past rule changes. City list: GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). Can't find your town? Pick the nearest city in the same time zone: every 50 miles east or west moves the rising degree by roughly one degree.

What a rising sign is

As the Earth turns, the whole zodiac passes over the eastern horizon once a day, one sign after another. The sign on that horizon at your birth is your rising sign, also called the ascendant. Your Sun sign stays the same for about a month around your birthday. The rising sign changes about every two hours, which is why two people born on the same day in the same hospital can have different ones.

In astrology the rising sign describes how you meet the world: the impression a stranger takes away after five minutes, and the way you start things. It also sets the layout of the chart. The ascendant is the start of the first house, so once you know it, the rest of the houses fall into place around it. Astrologers ask for your birth time before they read a chart for this reason, and it is also the one part of the big three that your date alone cannot give you.

Sun, Moon and rising: your big three

When someone asks for your big three, they mean these three signs, usually said in that order: "Cancer Sun, Aries Moon, Leo rising." Each one answers a different question in the tradition.

PlacementWhat astrologers read in itWhat you need to find it
☉ Sun signwho you are when you are being yourself on purpose: your will and the things you build your identity aroundbirth date
☽ Moon signwhat you need to feel safe, how you react before you think, what home means to youbirth date; on about 44% of birthdays also the time
↑ Rising signyour manner and the first impression you give, the way you start thingsbirth date, exact time and place

A Cancer Sun with Leo rising often comes across as warmer and louder than the Cancer description suggests: the Leo manner shows first, and the Cancer caution shows later, to people who get close. Most of reading the three together is spotting where they agree and where one covers for another. Our Moon sign pages go deeper into the second of the three, and the guide to Sun, Moon and rising sign meaning shows how to read all three side by side and how rare your combination is.

How we calculate your rising sign

We do the same astronomy a printed table of houses does, and the calculator prints every step for your own input under the result. For the example already loaded (July 15, 1990, 7:30 a.m., New York City) it goes like this:

  1. Turn local time into Universal Time. New York was on daylight saving time that day (UTC−4), so 7:30 a.m. is 11:30 UTC. The rules come from the IANA time zone database for the city you pick, and it also knows the years when a state started or stopped changing its clocks.
  2. Find the sidereal time at Greenwich, a clock that follows the stars rather than the Sun, and add the birth longitude. The result, called the RAMC, says which slice of the sky is overhead: 31.6° here.
  3. Project the eastern horizon onto the zodiac using the birth latitude and the tilt of the Earth's axis. That gives 13°59′ Leo: Leo rising. The same step for the meridian gives the midheaven, 3°48′ Taurus.

We tested the method on five charts from the Astro-Databank collection with a birth certificate time (Rodden rating AA). Our ascendant and midheaven matched the published charts to within 0.02° in all five, closer than the rounding of the published degrees.

Which rising sign is the rarest?

Every sign gets its turn on the horizon each day, but the turns are not the same length. The zodiac sits at a slant to the equator, so some signs cross the horizon steeply and quickly, and others lie almost flat along it and take much longer. In the Northern Hemisphere, Aries and Pisces rise fastest, which makes them the rarest rising signs. Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio rise slowest and are the most common.

We counted it directly. For every date from 1930 to 2025 we took a moment every 12 minutes of local clock time and recorded which sign was rising, in five US cities from south to north. The table shows the share of the day each sign was rising. It is a share of clock time, and births are not spread perfectly evenly over the day.

The pattern is symmetric: each sign has a mirror twin with the same share, Aries with Pisces, Taurus with Aquarius, and so on around the year. Latitude does the rest. In Miami the rarest sign still rises for 6.2% of the day; in Anchorage Pisces and Aries get only 1.7% each, about one moment in 58. In Sydney or Buenos Aires the order turns around, and Virgo and Libra become the quick, rare ones.

How much your birth time matters

A rising sign lasts about two hours on average, but in New York the real range runs from 1 hr 12 min for Pisces to 2 hr 33 min for Scorpio. Inside a sign the degree advances about one degree every four minutes on average, so a birth time rounded to the nearest half hour can put you in the wrong sign.

From the same count: for 25% of all moments in the day, the rising sign changes within 15 minutes before or after. Widen the window to half an hour and it is 50%. So if your recorded time is a family memory ("around lunch") rather than a time from a birth certificate, there is a real chance your rising sign is the neighbor of the one you have been told. The bar under your result shows exactly where your time falls, and the calculator warns you when you are within 20 minutes of the next sign.

If you have no time at all, check the long-form birth certificate: the US standard certificate of live birth has a field for the time of birth, and the state vital records office can issue that copy.

Your midheaven sign

The midheaven, or MC, is the point of the zodiac that was crossing the meridian when you were born: the line through the sky due south of you, if you were born north of the tropics. The ascendant is about how you begin things. Astrologers read the midheaven as what you aim for in public: your career and the reputation you build. Like the ascendant it depends on time and place, and the calculator gives it to the degree.

The midheaven is not always 90° from the ascendant. The farther you were born from the equator, the more the angle between them stretches or shrinks: in the New York example it is 100°. In New York a Leo rising comes with a Taurus or an Aries midheaven, depending on the birth hour.

The 12 rising signs in short

What the tradition says about each one as a first impression and a way of starting things:

Rising signHow it tends to come across
♈︎ Ariesdirect and quick, first through the door; patience comes later, if at all
♉︎ Tauruscalm and unhurried, easy to be around, hard to rush
♊︎ Geminitalkative and curious, asks the second question before you have answered the first
♋︎ Cancerreserved with strangers, protective with friends, reads the mood of a room
♌︎ Leowarm and visible; people remember where they met you
♍︎ Virgoneat and observant, notices what is out of place
♎︎ Librapolite and charming, keeps a conversation balanced and avoids open conflict
♏︎ Scorpiointense and private; says less than it knows
♐︎ Sagittariusopen and blunt, jokes early, ready to go somewhere
♑︎ Capricorncomposed and serious at first, often taken for older than they are
♒︎ Aquariusfriendly but a little detached, an original on purpose
♓︎ Piscessoft and dreamy, easy to talk to, adapts to whoever is there

These are first impressions, and they fade as people get to know you. The Moon and Sun signs carry more weight once someone is close.

Questions about rising signs

What are my big 3?

Your big three are your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign. The Sun sign needs only your birth date. The Moon sign needs the date and, on some birthdays, the time, because the Moon changes sign every two to three days. The rising sign needs the date, the exact time and the place. Enter all three in the calculator above and it shows each one with its degree.

Which rising sign is the rarest?

In the United States, Pisces and Aries rising are the rarest. At the latitude of New York, each of them is on the horizon for only 5.0% of the day, against 10.6% for Leo and Scorpio. The farther north you were born, the bigger the gap. South of the equator the pattern flips, and Virgo and Libra become the short ones.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

No. The rising sign moves through all 12 signs in a day, so the date alone leaves twelve possibilities. Without a time the calculator gives you your Sun sign, your Moon sign or the two it was between, and a table of every sign that rose that day, with its hours. If you know you were born in the morning or late at night, that table can narrow it down.

What is the difference between the rising sign and the ascendant?

None. Rising sign and ascendant are two names for the same point: the degree of the zodiac on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Astrologers write it as ASC or AC.

Why do different calculators give me a different rising sign?

Almost always because of the time or the time zone. If your birth time is within a few minutes of a sign change, rounding decides it. A calculator that applies the current daylight saving rules to an old date can also be off by a full hour. We take the time zone rules for your city from the IANA time zone database, which records past changes. When you are near a border, the calculator says so and shows how many minutes away the next sign was.

Does my rising sign change as I get older?

Not in your birth chart. It is fixed by the moment and place you were born. Some astrologers also look at a progressed ascendant that moves roughly one degree a year, but that is a separate technique, and your natal ascendant stays the same.

Is the midheaven the same as the 10th house?

In quadrant house systems such as Placidus, Koch and Porphyry, the midheaven is the start of the 10th house. In whole sign houses it usually falls in the 9th, 10th or 11th house, and in equal houses it can sit in any of those too. The calculator gives the midheaven itself, which is the same in every system.

Does the degree of my rising sign matter?

For the sign itself, only as a warning. An ascendant at 0° or 29° sits a few minutes of clock time from the neighboring sign, so a small error in the recorded time can change the answer. The calculator shows how far your time is from the border in minutes. Some astrologers also read planets within a few degrees of the ascendant as part of the first impression, which needs a full birth chart.

What is a progressed rising sign, and does this calculator show it?

A progressed rising sign comes from secondary progressions, a forecasting method in which each day after your birth stands for one year of your life. The progressed ascendant moves slowly and changes sign only a few times in a lifetime; how fast depends on your birth latitude and the sign it is in. This calculator gives your natal rising sign, the one fixed at birth. For the progressed one you need a progressed chart cast for a chosen date.

Why does a sidereal calculator give a different rising sign?

Western astrology, and this calculator, use the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars, and the two are now about 24° apart. So your sidereal ascendant is often one sign earlier: with the Lahiri value used in most Vedic software, the Leo 13°59′ of the July 1990 example becomes Cancer 20°. The two answers come from two different systems.
