Pisces Rising

Pisces rising is the sign Pisces sitting on the eastern horizon when you were born, so Pisces is your ascendant and opens your 1st house. In the tradition it is a soft-edged, imaginative, receptive first impression: you take in the mood of a room before you have said a word, and the price is boundaries that blur. Two planets rule the chart, Jupiter in the traditional scheme and Neptune in the modern one. Only a birth time and a city tell you whether it is yours. Our calculator works it out, and the short check below says whether Pisces was up at your minute. In New York it is also tied with Aries as the rarest rising sign.

Pisces rising traits

Only 1 in 20 of the moments in a New York day have Pisces on the horizon, so this is a small group, and what astrologers say about it fits on one thread: you are porous. Moods reach you early, and you have adjusted to them by the time you notice. From the outside that reads as easy, kind and a little hard to pin down: people say you are good to talk to, and later admit they could not tell what you wanted.

A made-up scene shows the pattern. A coworker is having a bad week and has said nothing. The person with this ascendant has already caught that her voice is flatter, brought her a coffee the way she takes it and stayed ten minutes longer in the break room than planned. That evening they cannot tell whether the tiredness is their own. Astrologers read it as the sign's gift and its bill: sympathy that arrives unasked, and a self that gets hard to find under other people's weather.

Pisces is a mutable water sign and the last of the twelve. Mutable is read as adaptable, water as led by feeling, and the last position as a sign that carries a little of all the others. Jupiter adds generosity and faith, Neptune imagination and haze. The weak points named in the tradition are avoiding hard conversations, agreeing and resenting it later, and drifting past deadlines.

A practical habit: sleep on any big yes. Descriptions have this ascendant agreeing on the spot, and a night's pause costs nothing.

Pisces rising appearance

Set Pisces beside Virgo, the sign opposite it, and the old descriptions pull apart. Virgo is neat and exact. Pisces is loosely drawn, with edges that look slightly blurred. The English astrologers of the 1600s said so bluntly.

The entry for the sign in William Lilly's Christian Astrology (London, 1647) reads: "A short stature, ill composed, not, not very decent, a good large Face, palish Complexion, the Body fleshy or swelling, not very straight, but incurvating somewhat with the Head." The punctuation is as printed.

Many modern guides soften that portrait into a mood: gentle features, a faraway look, a body that seems relaxed more than held. Either version is folklore. Plenty of Pisces ascendants are tall, sharp-featured and brisk, because family, age and every other planet do much more to a person's looks than a single sign.

To test the idea lightly, skip the height and the build. Ask a friend what your face does while you listen. That comes closer to what the tradition is describing.

Pisces rising woman and man

A birthday dinner for eight, one guest quiet at the far end of the table. The Pisces rising woman is the one who ends up in the next chair without having planned it. The tradition runs the logic from sign to habit: Pisces is a water sign, Neptune is its modern planet of mist and sympathy, so she reads what the table feels and answers that before the words. The cost is that she can leave carrying a mood that belonged to someone else, and a kind "it's fine" from her does not always mean it is.

The Pisces rising man gets the same chart under different expectations. He is pictured as gentle, a listener, someone who hears the whole story before offering a fix. Jupiter's generosity plus Neptune's softness makes him easy to talk to and hard to pin to a plan, so lateness and drift are the stock complaints. Others take his ease for passivity when it is often a way around a fight.

Both portraits sketch a manner. Before describing either one in love or at work, an astrologer would turn to the Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars.

Pisces rising in love and the Virgo descendant

Traditional astrologers read the partner you look for from the descendant, the point directly opposite your rising sign, where the house of partners begins. With Pisces rising it is always Virgo.

Read as qualities, Virgo is practical, observant, exact and dependable in small things: the person who remembers the dentist appointment. Set against a Pisces manner that feels its way along, the partner it sketches supplies structure and a plan for Saturday. The attraction has a reverse side. A Virgo-type partner notices what is untidy, and Pisces rising can hear a plain remark as a verdict. In turn, Pisces rising may idealize the person across the table and see the flaws late.

Guides picture this ascendant in love as romantic, loyal and quick to give. The warning is self-sacrifice, with boundaries that dissolve into the other person's wants. Look to Venus and the Moon for what you need once the first months have passed. A match is judged from two whole charts, so treat the Sun-sign links below as a starting point.

One more detail: Mercury rules Virgo, so the planet running your partner's side of the chart is neither Jupiter nor Neptune.

Your ascendant is in Pisces. That is 35 min from the nearest sign change, so a few minutes of rounding will not move it.

On that date in New York City, Pisces was rising from 10:10 p.m. to 11:21 p.m. Anyone born there in that window is a Pisces rising.

Pisces rising with each Sun sign

What happens when the Sun and the ascendant are different signs? Each Sun sign falls in a different house of this chart, and astrologers read that house as where the Sun's energy gets spent. Under every sign you get the house, plus the New York hours when Pisces came up at that time of year. Your own Sun sign shows in the birth chart calculator.

♈︎ Aries Sun

Aries comes right after Pisces, so the Sun falls in the 2nd house, the one astrologers tie to earnings, belongings and what you value. A cardinal fire Sun under a soft water ascendant starts things and then keeps them going quietly. These are births just before sunrise.

Sun in your Whole Sign 2nd house. In New York around April 4, Pisces rises 4:52 a.m. to 6:04 a.m. Aries zodiac sign

♉︎ Taurus Sun

Taurus sends the Sun to the 3rd house of siblings, neighbors and errands. The ascendant is fluid and a fixed earth Sun is not, so the pairing is often pictured as a dreamer with a stubborn streak and a taste for comfort. Births in the small hours.

Sun in your Whole Sign 3rd house. In New York around May 5, Pisces rises 2:51 a.m. to 4:02 a.m. Taurus zodiac sign

♊︎ Gemini Sun

Gemini and Pisces are both mutable and sit 90 degrees apart, a square, which astrologers read as friction: two minds changing at once. The Sun lands in the 4th house, home and family roots, the deepest point of the wheel, so expect births soon after midnight.

Sun in your Whole Sign 4th house. In New York around June 5, Pisces rises 12:49 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Gemini zodiac sign

♋︎ Cancer Sun

A water Sun under a water ascendant, a trine apart, an angle the tradition calls harmonious. Cancer puts the Sun into the 5th, which astrologers tie to dating and creative work. People with this mix are described as tender, protective and easy to hurt. They are born in the late evening.

Sun in your Whole Sign 5th house. In New York around July 7, Pisces rises 10:39 p.m. to 11:50 p.m. Cancer zodiac sign

♌︎ Leo Sun

Leo wants the stage and Pisces rising prefers the wings. The Sun in the 6th, the area of work, routine and health, points that pride at daily craft more than at applause. Evening births.

Sun in your Whole Sign 6th house. In New York around August 7, Pisces rises 8:37 p.m. to 9:48 p.m. Leo zodiac sign

♍︎ Virgo Sun

Virgo is the sign opposite, so the Sun stands on the descendant and opens the 7th house of partners. The Virgo Sun plans and the Pisces ascendant dreams, and they face each other across the chart. Astrologers read someone drawn to other people who still checks the details of what draws them. Births near sunset.

Sun in your Whole Sign 7th house. In New York around September 7, Pisces rises 6:35 p.m. to 7:46 p.m. Virgo zodiac sign

♎︎ Libra Sun

Libra puts the Sun in the 8th, linked to shared money, debts and deep ties. A balanced, pleasant Sun behind a receptive front makes an agreeable pair, perhaps too agreeable, since neither sign likes to say no. Late-afternoon births.

Sun in your Whole Sign 8th house. In New York around October 8, Pisces rises 4:33 p.m. to 5:44 p.m. Libra zodiac sign

♏︎ Scorpio Sun

Water again, with the Sun in the 9th, tied to long trips, study and faith. Scorpio adds depth and privacy to an open ascendant, so the person seems easy to read and is not. Born in the early afternoon.

Sun in your Whole Sign 9th house. In New York around November 7, Pisces rises 1:35 p.m. to 2:47 p.m. Scorpio zodiac sign

♐︎ Sagittarius Sun

Jupiter rules both signs in the traditional scheme, so one planet speaks for the Sun and the ascendant. The Sun is in the 10th, the highest house, which is why these births come around midday. Frank Sagittarius and soft Pisces make a generous, restless mix.

Sun in your Whole Sign 10th house. In New York around December 7, Pisces rises 11:37 a.m. to 12:49 p.m. Sagittarius zodiac sign

♑︎ Capricorn Sun

Capricorn sets the Sun in the 11th, the area of friends, groups and long-range hopes. Earth-sign discipline gives an imaginative ascendant a way to organize its plans, and the group is often where the ideas get done. A morning birth.

Sun in your Whole Sign 11th house. In New York around January 6, Pisces rises 9:42 a.m. to 10:54 a.m. Capricorn zodiac sign

♒︎ Aquarius Sun

The Sun sits in the 12th, the house just before the ascendant, which astrologers connect with solitude and whatever is kept out of sight. Aquarius brings detachment and ideas to a sign already inclined to withdraw, so time alone matters. Born in the hour or two after sunrise.

Sun in your Whole Sign 12th house. In New York around February 5, Pisces rises 7:44 a.m. to 8:56 a.m. Aquarius zodiac sign

♓︎ Pisces Sun

Sun and ascendant share Pisces, so the Sun stands in the 1st house. That takes a birth close to sunrise in Pisces season. Astrologers read the sign with no counterweight, so the receptiveness and the drift both show at full strength.

Sun in your Whole Sign 1st house. In New York around March 5, Pisces rises 5:50 a.m. to 7:02 a.m. Pisces zodiac sign

Pisces rising and your Moon sign

The tradition gives the Moon your instincts, what soothes you and your first reflex, and keeps it apart from the ascendant, which stands for manner. A Moon in a drier sign is read as steadying a Pisces ascendant and a Moon in water as amplifying it. Look up your Moon sign first, then read its line beside your Sun paragraph above.

Moon signWith this ascendant, in the tradition
♈︎ Aries Moonquick, hot reactions behind a soft front; sorry as fast as it is angry
♉︎ Taurus Moonsteady appetites and a need for comfort; anchors the drifting ascendant
♊︎ Gemini Moonchatty and changeable inside; feels better once the feeling is in words
♋︎ Cancer Moondeeply tender and protective; homesick for people more than for places
♌︎ Leo Moonwarm and proud; wants to be seen kindly and gives the same back
♍︎ Virgo Moonsits in the descendant sign: worries in detail and calms down by helping
♎︎ Libra Moonwants peace above most things; gives way too fast to keep the evening smooth
♏︎ Scorpio Moonintense feeling kept out of sight; remembers every slight and every kindness
♐︎ Sagittarius Moonrestless and hopeful; needs a plan for the future to feel steady
♑︎ Capricorn Moonself-controlled and dry; shows care by doing and holds the dreamy side back
♒︎ Aquarius Moonfriendly and detached; needs freedom to sort out whose feelings are whose

Jupiter and Neptune: the two rulers of a Pisces rising chart

Start with the sample birth in the check below: 10:45 p.m. on July 15, 1990, in New York. Calculated, it has Pisces rising, Jupiter in Cancer in the 5th house and Neptune in Capricorn in the 11th, so one ascendant gives you two planets to read.

The planet that governs your ascendant sign is known as the chart ruler. Pisces has two: Jupiter in the traditional scheme, and Neptune, added by modern astrologers after its discovery. A ruler's sign is read as the style it works in, and its house as the part of life it targets. Whole Sign houses run from your own sign: Pisces fills the 1st, then Aries, Taurus and the rest in order, down to Aquarius in the 12th.

Each ruler comes with a strength and a price. Jupiter is the planet of growth and generosity, so it lends this chart faith and an open hand, at the price of saying yes to more than a week can hold. Neptune is the planet of dreams, music and fog. It lends imagination and sympathy, and costs a vagueness that can slide into idealizing people and overlooking facts.

Where Jupiter falls with this ascendant, by Whole Sign house. We took every third date from 1930 to 2025 and one moment every 12 minutes of New York clock time, and kept the 69,538 moments with Pisces on the horizon.

Neptune moves slowly, so its sign and house depend mostly on the decade you were born in:

Jupiter is the quicker of the two, and across births its spread is nearly flat: its busiest house is the 5th house (9.1%), its quietest the 1st house (7.4%), and the sign it visits most is Cancer (9.1%). Counted by sign, Jupiter looks the same for this ascendant as for all birth dates together, with under 0.1 point between them, since where Jupiter stands in the sky has nothing to do with your ascendant. Only the house does.

Neptune is the opposite case. It moves so slowly that it mostly marks a generation: Capricorn for most births of the 1980s, Aquarius in the 2000s and Pisces in the 2010s, when it stood in the ascendant's own sign. Between 1930 and 2025 it was never in the 3rd to 6th houses (Taurus to Leo). Its rarest spot is the 2nd house (0.6%), the Aries placement of the youngest births.

Pisces rising and the midheaven: Sagittarius across the northern cities

Which sign stands highest in the sky when Pisces is on the horizon? Sagittarius, and nothing else, for all five US and Alaskan cities in our table. The midheaven, or MC, is that top point, read as career and public role. It comes from the same birth minute as the ascendant, and with Pisces rising it came out Sagittarius in all five cities on our table, from Miami to Anchorage.

Sagittarius is the 10th house of this wheel, the standard seat of career and reputation, so the MC lands squarely there. Jupiter rules Sagittarius in the tradition, which puts one planet in charge of both the face you show and the role you are known for. Neptune adds its modern layer on the ascendant side only.

How common is Pisces rising? One of the rarest in New York

Astrologers have long sorted the signs into slow risers and fast ones, and at northern latitudes Pisces is a fast one. The reason is geometry: the ecliptic, the path of the zodiac, meets the horizon at a steep angle where Pisces and Aries come up, and that stretch crosses quickly. New York gives the sign 1 hr 12 min at a time, 5.0% of the clock, tied with Aries for the smallest share of any sign.

Going north shortens it. Seattle gets 1 hr, and Miami, at the other end of the range, 1 hr 29 min. In Anchorage the stay is only 24 min, and Pisces holds 1.7%. The equator gives it 7.8%.

LatitudeShare of the dayTime on the horizon
0° N Equator (Quito, Singapore)7.8%—
25.8° N Miami6.2%1 hr 29 min
34.1° N Los Angeles5.6%1 hr 20 min

47.6° N Seattle4.2%1 hr
55° N Edinburgh, Moscow3.1%—
61.2° N Anchorage1.7%24 min
33.9° S Sydney9.9%—

Below the equator the picture flips, and Sydney gives Pisces 9.9%, which puts it among the longer signs there. Those percentages count minutes on the clock, not babies, since births do not spread evenly over the hours. Rarest only means shortest window.

When is Pisces rising? Hours by month, not dates

Someone reads 6:40 a.m. on a birth certificate from mid-March, searches for Pisces rising dates, sees Pisces season and decides it fits. It does, by luck, because the reasoning runs the wrong way.

The myth hands Pisces rising to people born in Pisces season. The data says every date has a Pisces window, because all twelve signs cross the horizon in turn each day. New York clocks put it around sunrise in March, just after dawn in February, mid-morning in January and near noon in December. November and October make it an afternoon sign, September and August an evening one, and July a late-night one. June brings it around midnight, and May and April in the small hours. Month by month the window opens about two hours sooner, with a one-hour hop when the clocks change. The table below is for the 15th. Longitude matters too, so a birth well east or west of New York lands a few minutes off, and the check above finds the window for your own city and day.

Questions about Pisces rising

What is Pisces rising?

Pisces was the sign on the eastern horizon when you were born, so it is your ascendant. Astrologers read that point as first impressions, and for Pisces they mean gentle, receptive and imaginative. Knowing it takes the clock time and place of birth along with the date.

Which rising sign is the rarest?

In New York, Pisces and Aries tie, each with 5.0% of the day (odds of 1 in 20 at a random moment). It depends on latitude. In Sydney Pisces gets 9.9% of the day, so it is not rare there.

How do you find your rising sign?

Gather the birth date, the exact minute and the city. Put them into the rising sign calculator, or run the check on this page for a yes or no on Pisces. If you remember only roughly when you were born, the hours-by-month table narrows it down.

What are the traits of Pisces rising?

Astrologers describe sensitivity, kindness, imagination and a quick read of moods. The warnings are blurred boundaries, a yes said too fast and a habit of avoiding conflict. Jupiter and Neptune, the two rulers, color the reading.

What does Pisces rising look like?

A 1647 astrology text describes a short body, a large face and a pale complexion, and is blunt about the rest. Modern guides soften that into a gentle, faraway look. Treat it as folklore, since family and age decide far more.

What is a Pisces rising man like?

He is pictured as gentle, a good listener, easy to talk to and slow to commit to a plan. The usual warning is steering around confrontation. His Mars sign says more about how he acts when pushed than the ascendant does.

What is the difference between Pisces rising and a Pisces Sun?

A Pisces Sun comes from the birthday alone. Pisces rising comes from the minute and the city, so a person born in any month might have it. The two coincide for births near sunrise in Pisces season, when the Sun stands in the 1st house.

Which planets rule Pisces rising?

Jupiter in traditional astrology and Neptune in modern. Jupiter's sign and house get read first, while Neptune moves so slowly that its sign mostly marks your generation. In our five northern cities the midheaven is Sagittarius, another sign Jupiter rules.
