Zodiac Elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water

The zodiac elements are fire, earth, air and water, the four groups astrology sorts the twelve signs into, three signs each. Fire is Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; earth is Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; air is Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; water is Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. "Your element" usually means the element of your Sun sign, but every planet in a birth chart sits in one, and the mix of all four is what astrologers call your element balance.

Which elements are compatible?
Signs of one element get on most easily. Fire pairs well with air, and earth with water; fire meeting earth or water, or air meeting earth or water, takes the most give and take. Element compatibility chart →
What is my element?

Can a chart have no fire or no water?
Yes, about one birth date in five has an element with no planet in it. Astrologers read that as something you build on purpose. What a missing element means →

What each element means

Fire

Fire is the element of initiative. Astrologers read it as warmth, confidence and an appetite for whatever comes next: a fire placement wants to start, to be seen and to keep moving. The standard complaint is that fire runs out of patience before it runs out of ideas.

Earth

Earth deals in what can be touched, counted and kept. In a chart it describes practical sense, stamina and loyalty to routines that work. Its weak point mirrors its strength: earth can hold on to a plan, a job or a grudge long after it has stopped paying off.

Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn: the earth signs in full →

Air

Air is thought put into words. Air placements notice patterns, compare, argue for the fun of it and need other people to bounce ideas off. They get accused of living in their heads; the tradition answers that air feels things as much as anyone but sorts them before showing them.

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius: the air signs in full →

Water

Water is the element of feeling and memory. Astrologers give it intuition, empathy and long attachments, along with moods that take a while to surface and longer to pass. A water placement reads the room before anyone in it has spoken.

What is your element balance?

Most people know the element of their Sun sign and stop there. Enter a birth date and we place the ten planets from the Sun to Pluto in their signs, count them by element and show which element leads and which one is missing. A birth time pins down the Moon; without one we check the whole day.

Worked example until you enter a date: a birth on November 12, 1977, no birth time, Eastern time.

Your strongest element: Fire · 5 of 10 planets

No planet in earth. A chart with earth missing turns up on 6.5% of birth dates; at least one empty element, on 22.5% of all birth dates.

How we counted
  1. No birth time, so we check all of November 12, 1977 in Eastern time, midnight to midnight. A planet that changed sign that day is shown with both signs.
  2. Each planet from the Sun to Pluto gets its sign from its position along the zodiac (astronomy-engine ephemeris, tropical zodiac), and each sign belongs to one element.
  3. Every planet counts as one. Many astrologers give the Sun, Moon and rising sign extra weight, so a tie or a close second is worth reading too. The rising sign is not counted here: it needs a birth time and a city, and the rising sign calculator finds it.

Why the twelve signs fall into four groups

Go around the zodiac from Aries and the elements repeat in a fixed order: fire, earth, air, water, then fire again with Leo. Three rounds of four make twelve signs, so each element gets three, and the three signs of one element stand 120° apart. Astrologers call that angle a trine and count it as the easiest one, which is why signs of the same element are said to understand each other.

The grouping is old. The Roman poet Manilius already puts the signs into these four triplicities in his Astronomica, early in the first century AD, and the qualities tied to each element come from Greek natural philosophy: fire hot and dry, earth cold and dry, air hot and wet, water cold and wet. Modern astrology keeps the four groups and reads the old qualities as temperament.

Fire and air are traditionally the active, or masculine, signs, and earth and water the receptive, or feminine, ones. Each family shares a quality, heat for fire and air and cold for earth and water, and the friendly pairings come from that: fire burns better with air, and earth holds water.

Element and quality: one sign for each mix

Every sign also has a quality, also called a modality: cardinal, fixed or mutable. Crossing four elements with three qualities gives twelve combinations, and each sign is exactly one of them. Cardinal signs open a season and start things, fixed signs sit in the middle of a season and hold on, mutable signs close it and adapt. So Aries is fire that starts, Leo fire that keeps burning, Sagittarius fire that moves on.

Dominant and missing elements: our numbers

We ran every birth date from 1930 to 2025, 35,064 dates at one moment of the day each in New York time, and counted the ten planets by element. On 77 in 100 dates all four elements are present. On 22 in 100, one element has no planet at all. Two empty elements came up on 146 dates (0.4%), and three never did.

Air is the element missing most often (7.6% of dates), water the least often (4.1%). By decade of birth, the 1940s had the most charts with an empty element (30.1%) and the 1950s the fewest (16.9%).

A single leading element is the usual case, but on 27.5% of dates two or more elements tie for first place. Earth leads alone more often than any other element (22.2%), water least often (15.9%). The most frequent spread is four planets in one element, three in the next, then two and one (28.5% of dates); we saw 21 different spreads in all.

The element of your Sun and the element that leads your chart are often not the same. On 32 in 100 birth dates a single element leads and it is not the Sun's. A Sagittarius with five planets in earth is someone astrologers would describe in earthier terms than the Sagittarius write-up suggests.

What a missing element means

Astrologers usually read an empty element as something that takes effort, or that you look for outside yourself, in partners, friends and jobs that supply it. Each gap has its own reading. No earth means a need for structure that has to be built on purpose, no water feelings that are hard to name until later, no fire a slow start and a need for someone else's push, and no air a habit of trusting a gut feeling over talking it through. Many astrologers also check the rising sign and the Midheaven before calling an element missing, since those two points need a birth time and are not in our count.

Element compatibility chart

Compatibility by element follows the angles between signs. Two different signs of the same element form a trine, the easiest match, and two people of the same sign share everything the element stands for. Fire with air and earth with water are the complementary pairs: 6 of their 9 sign combinations are sextiles, 60° apart, and the other 3 are oppositions, the pull of opposites. Every other mix (fire with earth or water, air with earth or water) splits evenly into squares, the classic friction angle, semi-sextiles and quincunxes, which astrologers describe as signs that do not quite see each other.

Sun, Moon and rising: three elements at once

The Sun is the element people name, the Moon the one astrologers connect with moods and comfort, and the rising sign the one tied to first impressions. In our run the Sun and Moon share an element on 25.3% of dates, about the one in four that chance alone would give. Sun, Moon and rising all in one element is rarer: 6.2% of the moments we checked in New York.

Western elements and the Chinese five elements

The Chinese system, wuxing, has five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. It took its classic form under the Han dynasty, in the second or first century BC, and in the Chinese zodiac the element goes with the year of birth, not with a sign of the month. A Leo born in August 2000 is also a Metal Dragon. The two systems answer different questions, so fire in one does not translate into fire in the other.

Zodiac element questions

How many elements are there in astrology?

Four in Western astrology: fire, earth, air and water, with three zodiac signs in each. The Chinese system counts five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) and ties them to the year of birth instead of the sign.

Is Aquarius a water sign?

No. Aquarius is an air sign, even though its symbol is the water bearer. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces; Aquarius shares the air element with Gemini and Libra.

Which zodiac elements are compatible?

Signs of the same element come first, since they sit a trine apart. Next are the complementary pairs, fire with air and earth with water. Fire with water or earth, and air with earth or water, are the matches that need the most adjusting, though the whole chart matters more than the Sun signs.

Which element is the most common?

By Sun sign none of them is: each element has three signs and about a quarter of all birthdays. Counting all ten planets, earth leads a chart on its own most often, on 22.2% of birth dates from 1930 to 2025, against 15.9% for water.

What does it mean to have no earth in your chart?

It means none of the ten planets was in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn when you were born, which happens on 6.5% of birth dates. Astrologers usually read it as practical structure that you have to build on purpose, often with help from people who have plenty of earth, not as a talent you lack.

How do I find my dominant element?

Count the signs of your planets by element; the element with the most planets is your dominant one. The calculator on this page does the count for the Sun through Pluto. Some astrologers give the Sun, Moon and rising sign double weight, so if two elements are close, read both.
