Aries, Leo and Sagittarius: what is the difference?
All three share the element. The quality, also called the modality, sets them apart, and it follows the seasons. Aries is cardinal: the Sun enters it at the March equinox, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and the sign is read as the one that starts things. Mars rules it. Its fire comes out as drive and a taste for competition.
Leo is fixed. The Sun passes through it in late July and August, deep in summer, when the season is fully settled. The Sun itself rules it, and astrologers describe Leo fire as steady warmth that wants to be seen: loyal, proud and slow to let go of a plan or a person.
Sagittarius is mutable. Its weeks close out autumn and end at the December solstice, when one season is giving way to the next. Jupiter rules it. The tradition reads its fire as restless and wide-ranging: travel, study, big questions and a dislike of being pinned down.
A quick way to keep them apart: Aries lights the match, Leo keeps the fire going all night, Sagittarius picks it up and carries it to the next camp.
Fire sign traits: strengths and weaknesses
Astrologers credit fire with quick starts. Fire signs act before they are sure and say what they think, and they recover fast from a bad day. In a group they tend to be the ones who suggest the plan, volunteer first or keep the mood up when it sags.
The weak spots come from the same heat. Impatience is the classic one. The interest that arrives quickly can leave just as quickly. Fire is also accused of talking over people and of starting more than it finishes, and its pride can make an apology hard. Each sign has its own version. Aries gets angry fast and cools fast. Leo takes criticism personally. Sagittarius can be blunt to the point of tactless and drift off when a commitment starts to feel heavy.
Fire signs in love: what they are attracted to
In the tradition, fire falls for energy. A fire sign is drawn to someone confident, someone with a plan or a project they talk about with their whole face, and someone who can keep up with teasing. Long silences, hints and slow guessing games usually lose a fire sign's interest.
Fire signs tend to show love by doing things: a spontaneous trip, a loud compliment in front of friends, turning up with dinner. What they ask for in return is attention and room. Aries wants to be the one who chose, Leo wants to be adored without having to ask, Sagittarius wants a partner who will not treat a weekend away with friends as a threat.
Fire sign compatibility with water, earth and air signs
Two fire signs are the easy match in most compatibility charts: same element, a trine apart, the same appetite for plans and noise. Aries and Leo, Aries and Sagittarius, Leo and Sagittarius all count here, and so do two people of the same fire sign. The usual warning is that nobody in the pair wants to be the one who slows down.
Air is next easiest, with one catch. For each fire sign, two of the three air signs sit two signs away (a sextile, read as friendly help). The third sits directly opposite. That is an opposition, read as strong attraction with friction. Aries has Gemini and Aquarius as sextiles and Libra opposite. For Leo the opposite sign is Aquarius. For Sagittarius it is Gemini. Air feeds fire in the old image: ideas and talk give fire something to burn.
Earth and water are harder. Again the reason is geometry. From any fire sign, the three earth signs land at one sign away, three signs away and five signs away: a semi-sextile, a square and a quincunx. The water signs land at the same three distances. None of those angles is a trine or a sextile, so astrologers say these pairs have to learn each other on purpose. Earth asks fire to finish what it starts; water asks fire to slow down and listen to feelings. Both can work, and both take more adjustment.

Fire in your birth chart beyond the Sun
Being an Aries, Leo or Sagittarius means your Sun was in fire. The Moon, Venus, Mars and the rising sign have their own signs, and astrologers often say these show more of daily life than the Sun does. A Moon in fire reacts fast and needs excitement to feel at home. Venus in fire loves openly and gets bored by routine. Mars in fire fights in the open and gets over it quickly.
That is why two people with the same Sun sign can feel so different. An Aries Sun with the Moon, Venus and Mars in earth signs reads as a much quieter person than an Aries whose personal planets are all in fire. People who say they have "two fire signs in their big three" mean that two of the Sun, Moon and rising are fire signs.
The reverse also happens. Astrologers say a chart with no planets in fire still has drive, only it has to be learned or borrowed from people and situations. Fire signs often appear in such a chart anyway, through the rising sign or a house cusp.

Our numbers: how much fire an ordinary chart has
We drew a chart for every date from 1930 to 2025 in New York, 35,064 charts at one moment each, and counted the planets in fire signs. Among the five personal planets (the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars), the most common result is one in fire, on 36% of dates. No fire at all among the five happens on 27% of dates, three or more on 12.6%, and all five in fire on only 38 dates out of 35,064.
A fire Sun does not mean a fire chart. Among dates with the Sun in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, 20% have none of the Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars in fire as well. The other way round, 65% of dates with a non-fire Sun still have at least one of those four in a fire sign. Counting all ten planets, only 4.8% of charts have no fire at all.
The slow planets change the picture by decade. Pluto was in Leo from 1937 to 1958 and in Sagittarius from 1995 to 2008, and Neptune was in Sagittarius from 1970 to 1984. Births in the 1950s had the most fire on average, 2.9 of ten planets, and births from 2020 to 2025 the least, 1.6. Those generational planets move too slowly to say much about one person, so most astrologers give the personal five more weight.

Questions about fire signs
Which are the three fire signs?
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Aries runs from about March 21 to April 19, Leo from July 23 to August 22 and Sagittarius from November 22 to December 21. The exact first day moves by a day from year to year, because the Sun reaches each sign at a different hour.
What months are the fire signs?
Late March to mid-April for Aries, late July to late August for Leo, and late November to late December for Sagittarius. One fire sign falls in every season except winter, which begins as Sagittarius ends.
What is the difference between Aries, Leo and Sagittarius?
They share the element and differ in quality. Aries is cardinal (it starts things, ruled by Mars), Leo is fixed (it holds steady, ruled by the Sun) and Sagittarius is mutable (it moves on, ruled by Jupiter).
Are two fire signs compatible?
In most compatibility charts, yes. Two different fire signs are a trine apart, the easiest angle between two signs, and two people of the same fire sign share the same pace and taste for adventure. The usual friction is that neither partner wants to back down in an argument.
Do fire and water signs get along?
They can, but the tradition calls it a pairing that needs work. Every water sign is a square, a quincunx or a semi-sextile from a fire sign, so there is no easy angle between them. Water wants depth and reassurance, and fire wants speed and space.
What are fire signs attracted to?
Confidence, energy and directness. In the tradition a fire sign is drawn to someone with a plan, a sense of humor and enough independence that the relationship does not feel like a cage.
Is Scorpio a fire sign?
No. Scorpio is a water sign, though it is often mistaken for fire because its traditional ruler is Mars, the same planet that rules Aries. Gemini is air and Taurus and Virgo are earth; the only fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
What are the ruling planets of the fire signs?
Mars rules Aries, the Sun rules Leo and Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Traditional astrology also gives the whole fire triplicity its own rulers: the Sun by day, Jupiter by night, and Saturn as a participating ruler, in the system of Dorotheus of Sidon.
What if I have no fire in my chart?
It is uncommon but not rare: in our count of every date from 1930 to 2025, 4.8% of charts have none of the ten planets in a fire sign. Your rising sign may still be fire, and the calculator above does not count it, because it needs your birth time and city.
