What a zodiac sign is
Over a year the Sun appears to travel once around the sky against the stars. Astrologers split that circle into twelve equal parts of 30° each, counted from the point where the Sun stands at the March equinox. Each part is a sign. When people say "I'm a Leo," they mean the Sun was in the Leo part on their birthday.
The Sun is only one body in a birth chart. The Moon and each planet were also in a sign when you were born, and astrology reads every one of them as a separate part of you: the Moon for moods and needs, Venus for love and taste, Mars for drive. That is why two people with the same Sun sign can seem nothing alike.
The 12 zodiac signs and their traits
One line on each sign, as Western astrology describes it. Every sign also has a weaker side, and the sign pages cover both.

Fire, earth, air and water signs
Each sign belongs to one of four elements, and each element has three signs spaced evenly around the wheel. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are read as active and enthusiastic. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are practical and patient. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) live in ideas and talk. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) lead with feeling and memory.
Signs of the same element share a way of meeting the world, which is why many compatibility charts pair them. Fire and air are often called friendly elements, and so are earth and water.
All four side by side, which ones match and how your own planets split between them: zodiac elements.
Cardinal, fixed and mutable signs
The second grouping is the quality, also called the modality. It follows the seasons. The cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, begin at the two equinoxes and the two solstices, and astrology reads them as starters. The fixed signs sit in the middle of each season and hold on. The mutable signs come at the end of a season, as the weather is already turning, and are read as adaptable.
Element and quality together describe every sign: Virgo is mutable earth, Leo fixed fire, Libra cardinal air. No two signs share both.
| Quality | Signs | Where they fall in the year |
|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | start of each season |
| Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | middle of each season |
| Mutable | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | end of each season |
Ruling planets of the zodiac signs
In traditional astrology each sign has a ruling planet, the one said to be most at home there. The Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each rule two signs, which is how the seven bodies visible to the naked eye cover all twelve.
After Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, many modern astrologers gave them Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio. The table above shows the classical ruler first and the modern one in brackets.
Opposite pairs: Aries and Libra · Taurus and Scorpio · Gemini and Sagittarius · Cancer and Capricorn · Leo and Aquarius · Virgo and Pisces.
The longest and shortest zodiac signs
All twelve signs are the same size on the wheel, but the Sun does not take the same time to cross them. Earth moves fastest in early January, when it is closest to the Sun, and slowest in early July. So the Sun spends about 31.4 days in Cancer and only about 29.4 in Capricorn.
If you count calendar days, that gap answers "what is the rarest zodiac sign": Capricorn and its winter neighbors hold the fewest, 8.1% of the days from 1930 to 2025 against 8.6% for Cancer. Actual birth counts also depend on the months when more babies are born, which this table does not measure.
| Sign | Days the Sun spends in it | Share of calendar days, 1930–2025 |
|---|---|---|
| ♋︎ Cancer | 31.4 | 8.6% |
| ♊︎ Gemini | 31.3 | 8.6% |
| ♌︎ Leo | 31.3 | 8.6% |
| ♉︎ Taurus | 31.0 | 8.5% |
| ♍︎ Virgo | 30.9 | 8.5% |
| ♈︎ Aries | 30.5 | 8.3% |
| ♎︎ Libra | 30.4 | 8.3% |
| ♓︎ Pisces | 30.0 | 8.2% |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | 29.9 | 8.2% |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | 29.6 | 8.1% |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | 29.6 | 8.1% |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | 29.4 | 8.1% |

How often your planets share your Sun sign
Your Sun sign leaves out a lot. We checked every date from 1930 to 2025 for the four planets that move fastest after the Sun: the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. On 29.4% of dates none of the four is in the Sun's sign, so the Sun sign stands alone. On 47.6% one of them is, and on 20.1% two are.
Mercury is the one most likely to share your Sun sign (51% of dates), because it never moves far from the Sun in the sky. Venus does so on 23.6% of dates and Mars on 13.7%. If your Sun sign description fits you badly, the calculator will show where the rest of your planets were.
| Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars in the Sun's sign | Share of dates |
|---|---|
| none of the four | 29.4% |
| one | 47.6% |
| two | 20.1% |
| three or four | 2.8% |

Questions about zodiac signs
What are the 12 zodiac signs in order?
Aries (March 21 to April 19), Taurus (April 20 to May 20), Gemini (May 21 to June 20), Cancer (June 21 to July 22), Leo (July 23 to August 22), Virgo (August 23 to September 22), Libra (September 23 to October 22), Scorpio (October 23 to November 21), Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21), Capricorn (December 22 to January 19), Aquarius (January 20 to February 18) and Pisces (February 19 to March 20).
What is the rarest zodiac sign?
By calendar days, Capricorn: the Sun crosses it in about 29.4 days, the shortest stay of the year. The difference is small, about two days between the longest and shortest sign, and the real number of people born under each sign also depends on birth seasons.
What are the water signs?
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, the fire signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and the air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.
What is the difference between Sun, Moon and rising signs?
The Sun sign comes from your birth date and is what people mean by "your sign." The Moon sign is where the Moon was, and it can change during a single day, so it sometimes needs the birth time. The rising sign is the sign coming up on the eastern horizon at your birth, and it needs the exact time and place. Our rising sign calculator works it out.
What if I was born on a cusp, the first or last day of a sign?
Then the year and the hour decide. The Sun enters each sign at a different time every year, so a birthday like August 22 or November 22 belongs to one sign in some years and the next sign in others. The calculator above checks your exact date; our zodiac sign dates page lists every border day year by year.
Is Ophiuchus a 13th zodiac sign?
Not in Western astrology. Ophiuchus is a constellation the Sun passes in front of from about November 30 to December 17, but the zodiac signs are twelve equal slices counted from the March equinox, not the constellations with the same names.
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
Astrology usually pairs signs of the same element, or fire with air and earth with water. That is a starting point only: a full comparison also looks at the Moon, Venus and Mars of both people, which our compatibility calculator does from two birth dates.
