Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces

Water signs are the three zodiac signs of the water element: Cancer (June 21 to July 22), Scorpio (October 23 to November 21) and Pisces (February 19 to March 20). In astrology water stands for feeling, memory and attachment, the side of a person that reacts before it explains. Cancer opens summer and is the cardinal water sign, Scorpio sits in mid-autumn as the fixed one, and Pisces closes winter as the mutable one.

Is Aquarius a water sign?
No. The water-bearer is an air sign, despite the name. Your list is three signs long: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. More mix-ups →
Are water signs emotional?
In astrology, yes: water is the element of feeling and memory, so all three are read as sensitive and slow to let go. That is a symbolic reading, not a measured trait. Traits and weak spots →

Why astrologers call these signs water

Greek physics built each element out of two qualities, and water was the cold, wet one. The Roman poet Manilius already groups Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces under it. Modern astrologers keep the pair and read it loosely: cold as inward and slow to show itself, wet as the urge to merge and bond. Water shares wetness with air, coldness with earth. Fire is its opposite on both counts.

On the wheel the three signs stand 120° from one another, a trine each way, so every water sign has the other two as its easiest partners. Start from Cancer, the fourth sign, and step forward four signs at a time: Scorpio is the eighth, Pisces the twelfth and last. After Pisces the count runs out, and the next sign, Aries, starts the circle again.

All four elements side by side, with a compatibility chart and your own element balance: zodiac elements.

How much water is in your chart?

A Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces Sun is one planet out of ten. Put in your birth date and we check where the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the outer planets were too, then count how many of them landed in water.

Worked example until you enter a date: a birth on October 18, 1992, no birth time, Eastern time.

How we worked this out
  1. The moment. No birth time, so we check the whole of October 18, 1992 in Eastern time, from midnight to midnight.
  2. Each planet's longitude. Its position along the zodiac, 0° to 360° from the March equinox point. The Moon was at 18°58′ Cancer at midday.
  3. Sign, then element. Every 30° is one sign, and the signs run fire, earth, air, water in turn: Aries fire, Taurus earth, Gemini air, Cancer water, then Leo fire again. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
  4. The count. We add up the ten planets from the Sun to Pluto. Astrologers weigh the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars most, so they get their own count; Jupiter to Pluto stay in a sign for a year or more and are shared by everyone born around the same time.

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces compared

The modality is what separates them. Cancer is cardinal. The Sun crosses into it at the June solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, and cardinal signs are read as the openers of their season. Its ruler is the Moon, the fastest body in the sky, and Cancer spends its feeling on protection: a home, a family, a small circle it has decided belongs to it.

Scorpio is fixed, its weeks falling in the middle of autumn. Mars rules it in traditional astrology. Modern astrologers add Pluto. Here water turns concentrated and private. Scorpio is described as loyal to the point of grudges and curious about whatever people would rather hide. It is also very hard to talk out of a decision.

Pisces is mutable. It fills the last weeks of winter, right up to the March equinox. Jupiter is the traditional ruler, Neptune the modern. Its water spreads instead of holding. Imagination and sympathy come easily. So does absorbing the mood of a room, and it can be hard to say where its own feelings stop and someone else's begin.

Think of the three as a tide pool, a deep well and the open sea. Cancer keeps a small, guarded space, Scorpio goes down a long way in one spot, and Pisces has no clear edges at all.

Are water signs emotional? Traits, strengths and weaknesses

Yes, in the sense astrology means it. The tradition gives water signs feelings that run strong and stay long. They notice tone before words and remember how a conversation felt long after they forget what was said. Hence the reputation for intuition. What astrologers call "psychic" in a water sign is usually a habit of reading small signals, not a power anyone has measured.

Water signs make patient listeners and loyal friends, and they are good with people at their worst: grief, illness, a breakup. They often have a feel for music, images and stories. The same depth causes most of their trouble. Moods can take over a whole day. Hurt gets stored instead of spoken, and a water sign may go quiet and expect you to guess why. Cancer turns defensive and clingy, Scorpio suspicious and unforgiving, Pisces evasive, slipping out of a hard conversation rather than having it.

Do water signs fall in love easily?

They attach fast and show it slowly. A water sign can be sure about someone within days and still take months to say so, because trust comes first and has to be earned in small tests: do you remember what they told you, do you notice when they go quiet, do you stay when things get awkward.

In a relationship water wants closeness that holds up over time. That means private jokes, shared routines and someone who texts back. Cancer looks after a partner the way it looks after a home. Scorpio wants all of a person, secrets included, and takes betrayal as final. Pisces romanticizes, sometimes forgiving more than it should. What wears water down is coldness, sarcasm aimed at its feelings, and a partner who treats every serious talk as drama.

Who is compatible with water signs?

Other water signs come first in most compatibility charts. Cancer with Scorpio, Cancer with Pisces and Scorpio with Pisces are all trines. Two Cancers or two Pisces already speak one emotional language. The risk astrologers name is a pair that sinks into the same mood at the same time with nobody to pull it out.

Earth is the classic second choice. Each water sign has two earth signs two places away, a sextile, and the third directly across, an opposition. Cancer's two sextiles are Taurus and Virgo, with Capricorn across the wheel; Scorpio gets on easily with Virgo and Capricorn and faces Taurus; Pisces has Capricorn and Taurus on either side and Virgo straight across. The old picture is earth holding water the way a riverbank holds a river: earth gives structure, water gives earth something to care about.

Fire and air sit at the awkward distances. Each lands one, three or five signs from a water sign (a semi-sextile, a square or a quincunx), and none of those angles counts as easy. Fire can feel careless to water, and water can feel heavy to fire. Air wants to talk a feeling through; water wants it understood first. Pairs like these can still last, and astrologers say they take more deliberate effort than water with water or water with earth.

A cell names how far apart the two Sun signs sit on the zodiac wheel and the usual reading of that distance. "Neighbors" is a semi-sextile, signs next to each other. Each linked cell opens the page for that pair. To compare two full birth charts rather than two Sun signs, use the compatibility calculator.

Water in the rest of your chart: Moon, Venus, Mars and rising

Your Sun sign tells you only where the Sun stood. Plenty of people born under Aries or Gemini have the Moon in Cancer or Venus in Pisces, and astrologers would call them watery in the parts of life those planets describe. The Moon in water needs emotional safety before it relaxes. Venus in water loves loyally and gets hurt quietly. Mars in water holds anger in and lets it out late, sometimes all at once.

The rising sign counts too. A Scorpio or Pisces ascendant often reads as more reserved or softer than the Sun sign suggests, and when two of the big three (Sun, Moon, rising) fall in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, astrologers call the whole chart water-heavy.

When a chart has little water, astrologers say feelings arrive through other people or have to be learned. They often look for water in the houses or in a close relationship.

Water placements we have written up, planet by planet: ☽Moon in Cancer, Moon in Scorpio, Moon in Pisces; ♀Venus in Cancer, Venus in Scorpio, Venus in Pisces; ♂Mars in Cancer, Mars in Scorpio, Mars in Pisces. If your Moon or rising sign is in water too, the page on reading your Sun, Moon and rising together takes the three as one picture; the rising sign itself comes from the rising sign calculator.

Water by the numbers: every birth date from 1930 to 2025

For every birth date from 1930 through 2025 we cast one chart in New York, 35,064 in all, and noted which of the ten planets fell in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. Take only the personal planets, the Sun and Moon plus Mercury, Venus and Mars: one of the five in water is the most common case at 36% of dates. Two or more of the five in water happens on 37%, none at all on 27%, and all five together on 64 dates.

Across all ten planets water is the element that is least often missing. A chart with no planet in a water sign turns up on 4.1% of dates, against 4.8% with no fire, 6.5% with no earth and 7.6% with no air.

A water Sun can still stand alone. On 23.5% of Cancer-Sun dates the other four personal planets all sit outside water; for Pisces it is 22.9% and for Scorpio 16.6%. It works the other way too: when the Sun is in a fire, earth or air sign, 64% of dates still put the Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars, one or more of them, in a water sign.

By decade, births in the 1940s had the least water, 1.78 planets out of ten on average, and births in the 1960s the most, 2.74. The slow planets explain much of that swing: Neptune was in Scorpio from 1955 to 1970, most of the 1960s, and Pluto followed it there from 1983 to 1995. Planets that slow are shared by everyone born in those years, so astrologers read them as a generation more than a person.

Each figure is a share of dates, one moment per date, not a share of people, since births are not spread evenly across the year. Pluto's stay in Cancer began before 1930 and is shown from 1930; Neptune and Saturn were in Pisces at the end of 2025, so their stays stop at the last day of our range. Water sign questions

Which signs are water signs?

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Cancer's season starts around June 21, Scorpio's around October 23 and Pisces' around February 19, and each lasts about a month. The start can move by a day, since the Sun crosses into a sign at a slightly different time each year.

What months are the water signs?

Late June through most of July for Cancer, late October through most of November for Scorpio, and late February to about March 20 for Pisces. One water sign falls in each season except spring, which starts as Pisces ends.

What is the first water sign?

Cancer. It is the fourth sign of the zodiac and the first of the three water signs in order, followed by Scorpio, the eighth, and Pisces, the twelfth.

Is Aquarius a water sign?

No. Aquarius is an air sign. The name means "water-bearer" and its symbol shows someone pouring water, which causes the mix-up. Every Western list of the elements, starting with Manilius, puts it with Gemini and Libra in air. Taurus and Virgo are earth signs. Only Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces belong to water.

Why are water signs so powerful?

Astrologers point to staying power. Water signs are said to remember, to read people well and to hold on to a bond or a grudge for years, and those habits are easy to underestimate. Scorpio's traditional ruler is Mars, the planet of conflict, and astrologers give it a fighting streak the other two lack.

Do water signs get along with each other?

Usually, yes. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces sit 120° from each other, the trine that compatibility charts rate as the most comfortable distance, and a couple who share one water sign tend to understand each other's silences. The usual problem is that neither is quick to say what is wrong.

Which planets rule Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces?

The Moon rules Cancer, Mars rules Scorpio and Jupiter rules Pisces in traditional astrology; modern astrologers give Scorpio Pluto and Pisces Neptune as well. Dorotheus of Sidon also gave the water group as a whole three triplicity rulers: Venus for charts cast by day, Mars for night charts, and the Moon as a participating ruler.

Can a chart have no water at all?

Yes, but of the four elements water is the one least often missing: in our count of 1930 to 2025, only 4.1% of birth dates leave Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces empty from the Sun out to Pluto. The calculator above skips the ascendant, which can't be worked out without the hour and place of birth, so a chart with no water planets may still have a water sign rising.
