Full Moon November 2026: the Beaver Supermoon in Gemini
The November 2026 full moon peaks on Tuesday, November 24, at 9:54 a.m. EST, which is 6:54 a.m. PST. That is mid-morning on the East Coast, so the Moon is already below the horizon at the exact moment. The Moon looks round to the eye for a night on either side of its peak, so look on the evenings of November 23 and 24.
It is a supermoon. The center of the Moon is about 360,750 km (224,160 miles) from the center of Earth, inside the limit astronomer Fred Espenak uses for the term. The Old Farmer's Almanac figures a supermoon at about 7% larger than average, a difference few people can spot without a photo to compare.
The Almanac calls it the Beaver Moon: in the 1760s Captain Jonathan Carver recorded the name for the month when beavers finish preparing for winter and retreat into their lodges. Cree and Assiniboine names for the same moon are Frost Moon. In astrology the Moon sits at 2° Gemini, opposite the Sun in early Sagittarius. Astrologers read a Gemini full moon as the point when news, a conversation or a piece of paperwork that has been building for two weeks comes out in the open.
Full Moon December 2026: the Cold Supermoon in Cancer
The December 2026 full moon is on Wednesday, December 23, at 8:28 p.m. EST (5:28 p.m. PST), two days after the winter solstice. It is the year's closest, about 356,700 km (221,700 miles) away, and the Almanac lists it as the closest of its three 2026 supermoons. Because the peak falls in the evening across the US, the Moon rises already full, low in the east around sunset.
The name Cold Moon comes from the Mohawk people, according to the Almanac. Other names for it are Long Night Moon (Mohican) and Moon of the Popping Trees (Oglala). The long night fits: this is the first full moon after the longest night of the year.
This one is in Cancer at 2°14′, opposite the Sun in Capricorn. Cancer is the sign the Moon rules in traditional astrology, so this is the Moon in its own sign. Astrologers connect it with home and family, and with the question of who takes care of whom, which suits a night two days before Christmas.
Full moons in 2027: supermoons, eclipses and the Blue Moon
There are 12 full moons in 2027, one in each calendar month, so 2027 has no monthly Blue Moon. It does have a seasonal Blue Moon: spring 2027 has four, and the third of them, on May 20, gets the name under the older Maine Farmer's Almanac rule that timeanddate.com describes.
Two 2027 full moons are supermoons, January 22 and February 20, the same pair the Old Farmer's Almanac lists. Two others are micromoons, July 18 and August 17, when the Moon is more than 405,000 km away.
All three lunar eclipses of 2027 are penumbral: February 20, July 18 and August 17. In a penumbral eclipse the Moon passes only through the outer part of Earth's shadow, so it dims slightly and does not turn red, and 2027 has no total lunar eclipse, or blood moon. NASA's eclipse tables give the February one as visible from the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, and the August one from the Pacific and the Americas.
The bigger event of the year falls on a new moon: the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027, with up to 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality along a path across Spain, North Africa, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. It is not visible from the US. Four weeks later, on August 31, comes the second new moon of August, which the Almanac calls a Black Moon.
The Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the fall equinox, is September 15, 2027. Spring's first falls on March 22, and Easter is the Sunday after it, March 28, 2027.
Full moon names and where they come from
The names below are the ones The Old Farmer's Almanac uses. It takes them from Native American, Colonial American and other North American sources, and each name originally covered a whole lunar month rather than a single night. Different peoples used different names for the same month.
| Month | Name | Where the name comes from | Date in this calendar |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Wolf Moon | wolves heard howling in midwinter; the Almanac thinks the name came over with European settlers | Jan 22, 2027 |
| February | Snow Moon | Carver wrote in the 1760s that more snow fell in this month than in any other | Feb 20, 2027 |
| March | Worm Moon | earthworms surfacing as the soil thaws, or tree-bark larvae in Carver's account | Mar 22, 2027 |
| April | Pink Moon | moss pink, or creeping phlox, one of the first wildflowers of spring | Apr 20, 2027 |
| May | Flower Moon | an Algonquin and Ojibwe name for the month flowers bloom | May 20, 2027 |
| June | Strawberry Moon | used by Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota and Lakota peoples for the strawberry harvest | Jun 18, 2027 |
| July | Buck Moon | new antlers on male deer growing at full speed | Jul 18, 2027 |
| August | Sturgeon Moon | lake sturgeon caught in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain | Aug 17, 2027 |
| September | Corn Moon | corn ready to harvest; in years when it falls closest to the equinox, the Harvest Moon | Sep 15, 2027 (Harvest Moon) |
| October | Hunter's Moon | game fattening up before winter, the season for laying in meat | Oct 15, 2027 |
| November | Beaver Moon | beavers finishing their lodges before the freeze | Nov 24, 2026; Nov 13, 2027 |
| December | Cold Moon | a Mohawk name for the month winter takes hold | Dec 23, 2026; Dec 13, 2027 |
Two names depend on the equinox, not the month. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, so in some years it falls in October; in 2027 it is September 15. The Hunter's Moon is the one after it. A Blue Moon is either the second in a calendar month or the third of four in one season.
What a full moon means in each sign
Every full moon is in the sign opposite the Sun, so the sign changes each month and runs through all twelve in about a year. Between November 2026 and December 2027 there are 14. Gemini and Scorpio each get two, and every other sign gets one. Each sign below takes its date from the calendar table, and the link goes to our page on the Moon in that sign as a birth placement.
♈︎ Full moon in Aries: Oct 15, 2027
Aries and Libra face each other across the zodiac. The Moon takes the Aries end, the sign of acting alone, and the Sun holds Libra, the sign of partners and fairness. Tradition says this is the night a held-back complaint gets said, since keeping the peace now costs more than a short argument.
♉︎ Full moon in Taurus: Nov 13, 2027
The Beaver Moon of November 13, 2027 falls in Taurus. The traditional scheme exalts the Moon in this sign, so it ranks among the steadier nights of the year. With Scorpio holding the Sun, the reading sets money and comfort against shared debts and trust: what you own outright versus what you owe.
♊︎ Full moon in Gemini: Nov 24, 2026 and Dec 13, 2027
Did someone tell you only half the story? Messages, siblings and short trips belong to Gemini, and the Sun opposite in Sagittarius stands for long trips and big beliefs. This full moon is said to bring out the facts behind an opinion, so check a story before you repeat it.
♋︎ Full moon in Cancer: Dec 23, 2026
Picture a kitchen table with people waiting at it and a work call you have to take: that is the pull of a Cancer full moon. The Moon rules Cancer and is at home here, and the Sun is in Capricorn, the sign of public duty.
♌︎ Full moon in Leo: Jan 22, 2027
Who is watching? A Leo full moon asks for an audience. Opposite it, the Sun in Aquarius stands for the group and the friends who keep you honest, and astrology frames the night as a test of whether you can take the stage without leaving them behind.
♍︎ Full moon in Virgo: Feb 20, 2027
The wobbly shelf and the overdue checkup belong to Virgo, the sign of routines and health habits. Against a Pisces Sun, which drifts and forgives, old lore pictures it as the night you finish the list you keep ignoring.
♎︎ Full moon in Libra: Mar 22, 2027
Early spring, with the Sun in Aries, the first sign, puts the full moon in Libra and relationships on the scale. Tradition links it to agreements and contracts, and to the person who has been doing more than their half.
♏︎ Full moon in Scorpio: Apr 20, 2027 and May 20, 2027
By the old dignity table the Moon is in its fall in Scorpio, a placement said to mean feelings that run deep and do not come up easily. The Taurus Sun opposite covers what is yours. The Scorpio side covers what you share, inherit or keep secret.
♐︎ Full moon in Sagittarius: Jun 18, 2027
June brings the Sagittarius full moon, with the Sun in Gemini. Sagittarius is the sign of travel and belief. The night is said to suit booking the trip or signing up for the course you keep talking about.
♑︎ Full moon in Capricorn: Jul 18, 2027
The Cancer and Capricorn axis comes back here, seen from the work side. Capricorn keeps feelings on a schedule, and the Moon is in detriment there, opposite a Cancer Sun. Duty meets family again: the promotion, the deadline, the bill.
♒︎ Full moon in Aquarius: Aug 17, 2027
Lake sturgeon gave the August moon its name, and on August 17, 2027 that Sturgeon Moon sits in Aquarius, the sign of groups and odd ideas, with the Sun in Leo, the sign of self-expression. In astrology it points to friendships and causes, and to the moment you notice which group you have outgrown.
♓︎ Full moon in Pisces: Sep 15, 2027
Heavy eyelids fit the Pisces full moon of September. With the Sun in Virgo, order is set against letting go, and astrology calls it a soft, tired night, better for sleep or a long bath than for decisions.
In our count for 1930 to 2025, a sign gets exactly one full moon in a calendar year 90.7% of the time, two in 6.2% and none in 3.1%.
New moons 2026–2027
New moons are the opposite point of the cycle: the Moon sits between Earth and the Sun, in the same sign as the Sun, and cannot be seen. Astrologers treat the new moon as a start and the full phase about two weeks later as the result, which is why the table puts each month's new moon next to the full one. Two new moons in this calendar are solar eclipses: February 6, 2027, annular along a path through Chile and Argentina, and August 2, 2027, total. Every new moon in the window is in the last column of the calendar table, with its time in Eastern time.
What to do and what not to do on a full moon
The tradition treats a full moon as a time to finish and review. Cosmopolitan's 2026 calendar puts it plainly: do not start anything new or make drastic decisions, and use the night to look at what has come to light. Common rituals are writing down what you want to let go of, cleaning the house and charging crystals in the moonlight. None of them needs more than an evening.
Astrologers' list of what not to do is short. Do not sign up for something big on impulse, because these are read as nights when feelings run high. Do not pick the fight you have been saving. If a decision cannot wait, sleep on it and make it the next morning.
Nothing here says something bad will happen. Many people get married, move house or start jobs on one. If you want to plan by the Moon, use the house finder above: one in your 10th house is the one to watch for career, one in your 7th for partners.
How often full moons happen
The Moon comes back to full every 29.53 days on average, so a calendar year has 12 or 13 of them. In our count from 1930 to 2025, 35 of 96 years had 13, a calendar month had two 40 times, and February went without one in 5 years. Over the same years there were 219 lunar eclipses: 82 total, 59 partial and 78 penumbral.
The same count answers a question the house finder raises. For a given birthday, one lands within 3° of the Sun's degree in about 20.6% of years. The same share of years has one exactly opposite that degree, which puts it within a few days of the birthday.
Questions
When is the next full moon?
The box at the top of this page checks today's date on your device and shows the next one with its time in Eastern and Pacific time and in your own time zone. The next three are November 24, 2026, December 23, 2026 and January 22, 2027.

How many full moons are in 2027?
Twelve, one in each month, from January 22 to December 13. Because no month has two, there is no monthly Blue Moon in 2027. The May 20 full moon is a seasonal Blue Moon, the third of four in spring.
How many full moons were there in 2026?

Only in the seasonal sense: May 20, 2027 is the third of four between the March equinox and the June solstice. By timeanddate.com's count, the next monthly Blue Moon, a second full moon in one calendar month, is on December 31, 2028.
What is special about the full moon in December?
In 2026 it is a supermoon, nearer to Earth than any other that year, and it falls two days after the winter solstice and two days before Christmas. It is the Cold Moon in the Old Farmer's Almanac and sits in Cancer, the sign the Moon rules in astrology.
Which full moon is the most powerful?
Astrology has no single ranking. Astrologers usually give the most weight to eclipses and to a full moon that lands on the degree of your own Sun, Moon or rising sign. In astronomy, the closest of this calendar is December 23, 2026.
What signs are affected by the full moon?
In the usual reading, the sign the Moon is in and the opposite sign, where the Sun is, feel it most. One in Gemini touches Gemini and Sagittarius first. It also counts for anyone with the Sun, Moon or rising sign within a few degrees of the full moon's position.
What is a supermoon?
A full moon near the closest point of the Moon's orbit. The astrologer Richard Nolle coined the word in 1979 for a full or new moon within 90% of the Moon's closest approach. In this calendar the supermoons are November 24 and December 23, 2026 and January 22 and February 20, 2027.
