Retrograde Planets Now

A planet is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it appears to move backward through the zodiac for a few weeks or months. Five planets are retrograde right now: Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The Sun and Moon never do it, but every other planet does. The motion comes from Earth passing other planets or being passed by them.

Station dates to the minute from the astronomy-engine ephemeris, tropical zodiac, in US Eastern time; degrees are where the planet stands still. The last column is our count of all 35,064 days from 1930 to 2025, at noon UTC. Pluto is a dwarf planet to astronomers; astrology still counts it with the planets, and so do we.

What each planet's retrograde means

☿ Mercury retrograde

Talk, travel, paperwork and devices. The best-known retrograde, and the one with the most advice attached: check the details, back up files, read the contract twice.

Retrograde now, until Nov 13, 2026

♀ Venus retrograde

Love, money and taste. Old partners resurface and spending gets a second look. Astrologers advise against a new relationship or a dramatic makeover until it ends.

Retrograde now, until Nov 13, 2026

♂ Mars retrograde

Drive, anger and desire. Projects stall and old fights come back. The traditional list favors finishing and repairing over starting.

Next: Jan 10, 2027

♃ Jupiter retrograde

Growth, belief and luck. Read as a time to check whether a fast expansion of the past year has real ground under it.

Next: Dec 12, 2026

♄ Saturn retrograde

Duty, limits and long plans. Deadlines and commitments come up for review, and the tradition reads the slowdown as a chance to fix the structure.

Retrograde now, until Dec 10, 2026

♅ Uranus retrograde

Sudden change and the urge to break free. Astrologers expect the push for change to turn inward and to settle before it acts.

Retrograde now, until Feb 8, 2027

♆ Neptune retrograde

Dreams, ideals and illusions. Astrologers read its retrograde as the season when you see something you idealized more plainly.

Retrograde now, until Dec 12, 2026

♇ Pluto retrograde

Power and deep change. The slowest of the eight, and a retrograde astrologers treat as collective, unless it stations on a point in your own chart.

What retrograde means

No planet ever reverses on its orbit. Earth and the other planets all go around the Sun in the same direction, but at different speeds, and we watch them from a moving platform. When Earth overtakes Mars, Jupiter or any planet farther out, that planet seems to slide backward against the stars for a while, the way a slower car looks to drift back as you pass it on the highway. Mercury and Venus, closer to the Sun than we are, look retrograde when they swing between Earth and the Sun and overtake us on the inside track.

Each retrograde starts and ends with a station, the day the planet seems to stand still before it changes direction. Astrologers watch the station days most closely, since the planet hangs on one degree for days. The tradition calls the weeks before and after, when the planet crosses the same stretch of sky for the first and third time, the shadow.

In astrology the retrograde planet's themes turn inward. The usual advice is to review, repair and finish what is already started, and to wait on brand-new launches in that planet's area of life. The tradition frames this as advice about pace.

How often each planet is retrograde

Beyond Earth's orbit, the farther out a planet is, the more of its time it spends retrograde. In our count of 35,064 days from 1930 to 2025, Mars was retrograde on 9.5% of them, Jupiter on 30.1% and Saturn on 36.6%, and Uranus, Neptune and Pluto sat between 41% and 43.5%. The two planets inside Earth's orbit follow their own rhythm: Mercury on 19.2% of days, because it laps Earth so often, and Venus on only 7.2%.

CHANI writes that the planets from Jupiter to Pluto "are retrograde for approximately half the year," and Astrology.com puts Jupiter and Saturn at "about a third of the time." Our count sits between the two: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto a little over two days in five, Saturn at 36.6% and Jupiter at 30.1%.

Mercury, Venus and Mars turn back in short, sharp loops. Mercury does it three or four times a year, for about 22 days each time. A Venus retrograde averages 42 days, and in 31 of the 96 years Venus had no retrograde day at all. Mars averages 74 days and missed 38 of the 96 years.

Year-by-year counts for each planet are in our zodiac and retrograde statistics, with the data as CSV. Everything else we counted: research.

How many planets are retrograde at once

On an average day 2.3 planets are retrograde. Two or three at once is the most common count, covering 46.2% of days since 1930. No planet was retrograde on 10.8% of days, a little more than one day in ten.

The record in our count is seven at once, on just 12 days: January 6 to 9, 1944, April 30 to May 5, 1984 and July 13 to 14, 1986. On no day from 1930 to 2025 were all eight retrograde together.

Retrograde planets in a birth chart

Most people are born with some planet retrograde. In our count 89.2% of birth dates from 1930 to 2025 have at least one. The planets that are retrograde often, Jupiter through Pluto, are shared by everyone born in the same months, so astrologers read them as a generation's style more than a personal trait. A retrograde Mercury, Venus or Mars at birth is rarer and is read more personally: the planet's energy works inward first, then comes out.

Astrology.com says most people have two or three retrograde planets in their chart. Our average across all 35,064 dates is 2.3, so the rule of thumb holds. To see yours, enter your birth date in the birth chart calculator; a small R next to a planet means it was retrograde that day.

Questions about retrograde planets

What planets are retrograde right now?

Five planets are retrograde right now: Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Mercury until Nov 13, Venus until Nov 13, Saturn until Dec 10, Uranus until Feb 8, 2027 and Neptune until Dec 12. The table at the top of this page updates to the day you open it.

How many planets are retrograde right now?

5 of 8, counting the eight planets from Mercury to Pluto. Some sites also count Chiron or the lunar nodes, which is why their number can come out higher than ours.

Is Mercury retrograde right now?

Yes. Since Oct 24. Turns direct Nov 13, 2026, at 5°02′ Scorpio. Phases, shadow dates and what it means for each sign are on our Mercury retrograde page.

Which planets go retrograde in 2026?

Every planet except Mars spends part of 2026 retrograde. In 2027, every planet except Venus does. The dates for both years are in the table above, Eastern time.

What does it mean when a planet is retrograde?

It means the planet appears, from Earth, to move backward through the zodiac. The motion is apparent: it comes from Earth overtaking the planet, or the planet overtaking Earth. In astrology a retrograde is read as a time when that planet's themes call for review rather than new starts.

Is there ever a time when no planets are retrograde?

Yes, but not often. From 1930 to 2025, 10.8% of days had no retrograde planet, Mercury through Pluto. The next stretch with none starts on Apr 12, 2027 and lasts until May 8, 2027, about 25 days.

What is the most planets ever retrograde at once?

Seven, in our count of every day from 1930 to 2025. It happened on 12 days in 1944, 1984 and 1986. Eight at once never happened in that span. In the next 12 months the most at once is 5.

Which planet is retrograde the most?

Neptune, on 43.5% of days from 1930 to 2025, with Pluto close behind at 43.3%. The least is Venus, at 7.2%.

Do the Sun and Moon go retrograde?

No. Seen from Earth, the Sun and the Moon always move forward through the zodiac. Only planets have retrograde loops.

Why do retrograde dates differ between websites?

A station is one moment, the same everywhere, but its calendar date depends on the time zone. A station at 8 p.m. in New York is already the next day in UTC and in Europe. Many sites print dates in UTC or in Indian time without saying so. Ours are in US Eastern time, with Pacific time next to each station.

Is the North Node retrograde?

The mean North Node always moves backward through the signs, so astrologers do not list it as a retrograde event. The true node moves backward most of the time and forward for short spells. Our North Node page has both.

Is it bad to be born with retrograde planets?

No. 89.2% of birth dates since 1930 have at least one retrograde planet, and the average is 2.3. Astrologers read a natal retrograde as a planet that works inward before it shows, not as a flaw.
