What Mercury retrograde means
Mercury moves faster than Earth around the Sun. A few times a year Earth's view of it lines up so that it seems to stop, drift backward against the stars for about three weeks, stop again and move on. Nothing changes in the planet itself; the backward motion is an effect of where we watch from.
Astrology reads Mercury as the planet of messages, travel, paperwork and thinking, so its retrograde is treated as a period for the "re-" words: review, revise, reconnect, repair. Traditional advice is practical. Double-check bookings and contracts, back up files, reread an email before sending it, and use the weeks to finish what is already started. Many people sign leases and launch projects during a retrograde with no trouble; the tradition is a prompt for care, not a ban.
The sign matters too. In 2026 the retrogrades fall in the three water signs, Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio, which astrologers link with feelings, family and private matters. In 2027 they start in water signs and finish in the neighboring air signs, Aquarius, Gemini and Libra.
The Mercury retrograde shadow period
The shadow is the stretch of sky Mercury covers three times. Before it turns, Mercury first crosses the degree where it will later turn direct; that day is the start of the pre-shadow. After it turns direct, it has to travel forward again until it passes the degree where the retrograde began; that day ends the post-shadow. Each shadow adds two to three weeks on either side; in fall 2026 the pre-shadow lasts 20 days and the post-shadow 17. In the tables above, the first and fourth columns give those dates.
Astrologers who use the shadow read the pre-shadow as the time when the issue that the retrograde will revisit first shows up, and the post-shadow as the time it gets settled. If you want to be careful with a contract or a big purchase, the retrograde weeks themselves are the ones the tradition flags; the shadow is a softer version of the same advice.
What not to do during Mercury retrograde
The traditional list is short and practical. Avoid signing a contract you have not read twice; it is fine to sign one you have checked. Do not book travel without confirming dates and names on the ticket. Hold off on buying electronics if you can wait three weeks, and back up your phone and laptop before the start date. Do not send the angry email or the late-night text; draft it and reread it in the morning. Old contacts and old projects tend to resurface in these weeks, and the tradition says to finish them rather than start new ones.
None of this is a ban. People get married, change jobs and launch products during every retrograde. The weeks are best used for the "re-" jobs: review, revise, repair, reply.
