What your Mercury sign means
Astrologers use Mercury for the mind and for communication: speech, writing, learning, memory, trade and short trips. Your Sun sign says who you are; your Mercury sign says how that person thinks and explains things. Two people with the same Sun sign can argue in completely different styles because their Mercury signs differ.
In the tradition Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. In Gemini it is quick and curious, in Virgo careful and precise, and Virgo is also its exaltation, which makes it the one sign where Mercury is both at home and exalted. Mercury is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, the signs opposite its homes, and in fall in Pisces. There the mind leans toward meaning and imagination over detail. That says nothing about intelligence.

Why Mercury is always in or next to your Sun sign
Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun, and from the Earth it never seems to stray far from it. The widest gap we found, on any day between 1930 and 2025, was 27.8°, less than one sign.
So you have only three possible Mercury signs: the Sun's own sign plus the one just before and the one just after it. In our count, Mercury shares your Sun sign on 51% of birth dates and sits next door on 49%. Two signs away never happens. An Aries can have Mercury in Pisces, Aries or Taurus and nowhere else.
Which side it falls on tells you something about the sky at your birth. Mercury that leads the Sun through the zodiac sets after sunset and is an evening star; Mercury that trails it rises before dawn. Mercury is hard to see either way because it hugs the Sun. Births split about evenly, 50.1% under an evening Mercury.
Why some Mercury signs are more common
The spread is narrow but real. Sagittarius (9.2%) and Capricorn (9%) are the most common Mercury signs since 1930, and Gemini (7.51%) and Cancer (7.52%) the rarest.
Two counts from our data explain it. From 1930 to 2025 Mercury entered Sagittarius 125 times and Gemini only 109 times, and each visit to Sagittarius lasted a little longer, 25.6 days against 24.1. Mercury is also retrograde less often in Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn: 17.6% of Sagittarius Mercury birth dates are retrograde, against 20.9% in Leo.
A normal visit to a sign lasts about 25 days. When Mercury turns retrograde inside one sign, the stay stretches; the longest in our range ran from June 1, 1934 to August 9, 1934: 70 days in Cancer.
Born during Mercury retrograde
Mercury turns retrograde about three times a year for about three weeks each time, so being born under it is common. It covers 19.2% of birth dates in our 1930 to 2025 count, about one in five. We counted 303 retrograde periods across 96 years, each 20 to 24 days long.
Astrologers read a natal Mercury retrograde as a mind that reviews before it speaks, rethinks in private and often finds its own way of learning. That reading belongs to the tradition. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), 25.3% of birth dates: you think fast and decide early. Aries says it first, Leo says it with conviction and a story, and Sagittarius goes for the big picture and skips the footnotes.
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), 25.3% of birth dates: you think in practical terms and trust what can be checked. Taurus learns slowly and keeps it, Virgo spots the error on page three, and Capricorn plans before it talks.
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), 24.8% of birth dates: ideas and talk come easily. Gemini keeps several threads going at once, Libra weighs both sides out loud, and Aquarius questions the rules everyone else accepts.
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), 24.7% of birth dates: you think through feeling and memory. Cancer remembers how things were said, Scorpio listens for the motive, and Pisces thinks in images and understands before the words arrive.
