What your Mars sign means
Astrologers turn to Mars for action, desire and anger. Where Venus describes what attracts you, Mars describes how you pursue it. It shows how you start things, how you compete, how fast your temper rises and what you do with it. It also shows the kind of physical effort that suits you.
In the tradition Mars rules two signs, Aries and Scorpio. In Aries its force is open and fast; in Scorpio it works in private and holds on. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, where drive turns into patient ambition. Mars is in detriment in Libra and Taurus, opposite its homes, and its fall is Cancer. Those labels only say how easily Mars acts in a sign. A Libra Mars still fights; it just prefers to negotiate first.
Astrologers compare two charts in synastry. One partner's Mars against the other's Venus is read for attraction, and Mars against Mars for how two people argue.

Shares: our count of all 35,064 birth dates from 1930 to 2025, at noon UTC. Strength is the traditional dignity of Mars in the sign (on a phone, under the sign name). Retrograde is the share of that sign's birth dates with Mars retrograde.
Why your Mars sign depends on your birth year
Mars takes about two years to go around the zodiac, and it does not move at an even pace. In an ordinary year it crosses a sign in six or seven weeks. Once every two years or so it slows, turns backward and can sit in one sign for months. People born in the same year therefore often share a Mars sign, and the common Mars signs change from decade to decade.
Mars was in Aries on 12.5% of birth dates from 2020 to 2025 and on only 5.4% in the 1930s. Mars in Leo covered 12.5% of the 1940s and 6.5% of the 1950s. Each Mars sign page shows its own share by decade, so you can see whether yours was common in your birth year.
Mars can sit anywhere around the zodiac from the Sun, unlike Venus and Mercury. Any Mars sign can come with any Sun sign. Mars and the Sun share a sign on 13.7% of birth dates. On 2.98% Mars sits in the opposite sign.
Why some Mars signs are more common
Leo (10.12%) and Virgo (10.06%) are the most common Mars signs since 1930, and Pisces (6.72%) and Aquarius (6.8%) the rarest. The gap is 3.40 percentage points, wider than for Venus, Mercury or the Moon.
The retrograde loops explain most of it. From 1930 to 2025 a Mars retrograde began in Leo 6 times and in Virgo 6 times, against 2 times in Pisces and 2 in Capricorn. A visit to Virgo averaged 63 days, a visit to Aquarius 45. The longest stay in our range was in Virgo: 236 days, from November 11, 2011 to July 3, 2012.
There is a second reason. Mars has an oval orbit, and it moves fastest through the part of the zodiac around Pisces and Aquarius, so it spends less time there in any case.
Mars retrograde in your birth chart
From 1930 to 2025, 9.5% of birth dates fell in a Mars retrograde, about one in ten. Mars turns retrograde less often than any other planet: 45 times in 96 years, roughly one every 26 months, each lasting 60 to 81 days. In more than half of all calendar years no Mars retrograde begins at all.
In astrology, a Mars that was retrograde at birth means drive that turns inward: anger that builds before it shows, effort that goes into rethinking and redoing, a slow start followed by stubborn persistence. This is the traditional reading. The calculator shows whether your Mars was retrograde and where in the loop your birth date falls.
Your Mars return
A Mars return is the day Mars comes back to the exact degree it held when you were born. Astrologers treat it as the start of a new two-year cycle of drive, a good moment to start a project or a training plan.
The first one does not come at the same age for everyone. For our test dates from 1930 to 2025 it fell between 17 and 23 months after birth. When Mars turns retrograde near your degree, it crosses it three times within a few months; that happened in 3.5% of the cases we checked. After that the returns come about every two years. The calculator lists your first Mars return and your next one, with every crossing.
Mars signs by element
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), 25.4% of birth dates: you act first and think while moving. Aries charges straight in, Leo fights for pride and for its people, and Sagittarius fights for a cause or for room to roam. Anger flares and burns off quickly.
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), 24.7% of birth dates: drive goes into results you can see. Taurus is slow to start and hard to stop, Virgo works by getting the details right, and Capricorn, where Mars is exalted, climbs patiently. Anger runs cold and lasts.
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), 25.1% of birth dates: you fight with words and plans. Gemini argues and juggles projects, Libra pushes through other people and wants a fair deal, and Aquarius acts on principle. Anger is often argued out rather than shown.
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), 24.8% of birth dates: drive follows feeling. Cancer fights hardest to protect, Scorpio keeps its plans private and outlasts everyone, and Pisces acts for others or for a creative aim. Anger tends to come out sideways.

Why is my Mars sign so common among people my age?
