The 6th House in Astrology

The 6th house is the house of daily work, service, health routines, coworkers and pets: the hours of an ordinary workday and the small jobs nobody applauds. Lilly gave it servants, small animals and sickness; modern astrologers read the same ground as your job and your habits.

Enter a birth date, a clock time and a city to see who rules the 6th and which planets stand in it, once by Placidus and once by Whole Sign. The example below is a birth on July 15, 1990, at 9:00 p.m. in New York.

In our count the 6th house was empty in 47% of charts for New York births, 1930 to 2025. On this birthday the Sun stood in the 6th house from 8:21 p.m. to 9:54 p.m., local time.

What the 6th house means

An alarm clock set for the same minute every weekday sums up this house. It holds work done for an employer or a household, and the routines that keep a body going. Lilly's 1647 textbook fills it with servants, tenants, day laborers, small livestock, the father's brothers and sisters, and sickness. These are old topics of the house, and none is a forecast.

Modern writers keep the old list and add routines, wellness habits and coworkers. Across the chart sits the 12th house, and the two form an axis, daily work and illness on one side and retreat and hidden matters on the other.

Your 6th house sign

Count your rising sign as number one and go on to six to find the sign that opens the house: Aries rising lands on Virgo, Taurus rising on Libra. Placidus sometimes picks the sign next door. To find your rising sign, use our rising sign calculator first.

♈︎ Aries on the 6th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)

The alarm goes off and the feet are on the floor before any thought arrives. Aries likes a workday that opens at speed with the hardest task first. Stress goes to the body as restlessness, and hard exercise is the usual way of settling it. Coworkers get a fast yes or a fast no.

♉︎ Taurus on the 6th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)

This sign builds a workday it can lean on, with the same chair, the same lunch and the same route home. Appetite and sleep are the first gauges of how the week went. Colleagues learn that Taurus cannot be hurried and that a slow yes is a firm one. A cat fed at a fixed hour suits it.

♊︎ Gemini on the 6th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)

One job is rarely enough. Gemini usually runs two or three tasks at once, or keeps a side project going beside the main work, and coworkers are people to talk with between tasks. A busy head can keep the shoulders tight and sleep short, so brief breaks help more than one long one.

♋︎ Cancer on the 6th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)

When the week turns hard, this sign feels it in the stomach first. Cancer turns an office into a household: a shared snack drawer, a sense of who is having a bad month, a mug nobody moves. A cat asleep on the windowsill counts as family, and the mood of the day follows the mood of the room.

♌︎ Leo on the 6th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)

Praise is fuel for this sign. Leo wants the job done with some style and is happiest when somebody notices, so a boss who never says thanks wears it down. Rest works best when it feels like a treat, such as a long Sunday or a real vacation.

♍︎ Virgo on the 6th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)

Its own sign sits on this cusp, the most natural fit in the chart. Mercury, the ruler, shows in checklists, labeled folders and a desk where everything has a place. Coworkers rely on this person to catch the typo. Worry before a deadline is the pattern to watch, with skipped lunches and tight shoulders.

♎︎ Libra on the 6th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)

A fair split of the work matters to Libra more than a grand title. The sign is happiest in pairs and small teams, and an office feud wears it out faster than a heavy load. Rest comes from balance: a walk after dinner, a day off that is truly off.

♏︎ Scorpio on the 6th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)

The rhythm is three hours of total focus, then the door shut. Mars rules the sign in the older scheme and Pluto in the modern one. Tension is held in and surfaces later as fatigue, so real recovery counts for more than a nap. Colleagues see little of what goes on beneath.

♐︎ Sagittarius on the 6th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)

Eight hours at one desk is a long time for this sign. The body asks to move, through a run, a hike or a bike commute, and a cramped schedule shows first as irritability. The best conversation comes from colleagues in other fields or other countries.

♑︎ Capricorn on the 6th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)

Capricorn keeps the timesheet honest and the overtime quietly growing. Saturn, the ruler, rewards steady habits, and the sign does best with a schedule written down. The body is consulted last, with a stiff back after long sitting and rest postponed until the project ends.

♒︎ Aquarius on the 6th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)

Odd hours, remote setups and projects with no precedent suit Aquarius better than a fixed desk. Saturn is the older ruler and Uranus the newer. Sleep tends to be irregular, so a fixed bedtime helps more than it sounds. Coworkers are treated as equals, friendly but hard to know.

♓︎ Pisces on the 6th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)

Office moods pass through Pisces like weather. Tiredness arrives as fog, so sleep, water and a quiet half hour count for more than they seem to. This is the colleague who listens and ends up leaned on, and the one who brings home a stray. The task is to draw a line between helping and absorbing.

Planets in the 6th house

Routines show a planet here more than headlines do. Any single planet lands in this house in roughly 8% of charts, and the link under each paragraph goes to our page for that planet by sign.

☉ Sun in the 6th

Work and identity overlap with the Sun here, so a job that means nothing drains faster than a heavy one. Routine is how this person recharges: a steady bedtime, a fixed morning. Tradition adds little beyond the house's own topics.

☽ Moon in the 6th

The workday sets the mood for the Moon here. A calm office makes the day easier and a tense one does the opposite, so a regular mealtime and bedtime carry weight. The Moon's joy is the 3rd, so this house gives it no extra tradition.

☿ Mercury in the 6th

Lists, emails and small fixes fill the day when Mercury is here. The mind works best from a written plan, and anxious thinking can keep the body wound up after hours. Lilly names Mercury, with Virgo, as a cosignificator, so the old books link this planet to the house directly.

♀ Venus in the 6th

Venus makes the workday easier through pleasant surroundings: a tidy desk, kind coworkers, a lunch eaten sitting down. Tradition counts Venus as a benefic, and Lilly says Mars and Venus together in this house are arguments of a good physician. Habits of comfort are the weak spot.

♂ Mars in the 6th

Lilly writes that "Mars rejoyceth in this house", and the Hellenistic joys give Mars the same seat, so the old books treat it as a planet at ease. Hard work comes naturally, and workouts, deadlines and a short temper are the daily texture.

♃ Jupiter in the 6th

Generous bosses and extra help fit Jupiter in the workday, along with a habit of taking on more than the calendar holds. A pleasant routine can slide into long lunches. Jupiter is the greater benefic of the old books, and it softens the house's hard name without making any promise.

♄ Saturn in the 6th

A heavy workload and a strict schedule go with Saturn here, along with the habit of finishing what was started. Scheduled rest suits it better than rest that is earned. Saturn takes its joy in the 12th, the far end of the 6th and 12th axis.

♅ Uranus in the 6th

Uranus brings a job that changes without notice: new software, a new schedule, shifted hours. Sleep and meals tend to be irregular, and an unusual pattern, such as a night job, may fit better than the standard one. The old books never met Uranus.

♆ Neptune in the 6th

Boundaries between work and home blur with Neptune here. Dedication to caring or creative work comes easily, as does a drained feeling when the job description never settles. A clear end to the workday and a steady sleep schedule count most.

♇ Pluto in the 6th

Pluto brings intensity to the workday: all-or-nothing effort, a hold on control, a colleague or a system that changes you. Habits get rebuilt in cycles, with long stretches of one routine and then a hard reset.

When the 6th house holds no planet

A workday with no big event still gets done, and a bare house is read the same way, through the sign where it begins and whichever planet governs that sign. About 47% of New York charts leave this house bare under Placidus, while 31% hold a lone planet. Lilly's topics, from servants to sickness, belong to the house either way.

Your 6th house ruler

Seven traditional rulers share twelve signs, so the ruler of your cusp is one of a short list, and where it stands shows what your routine is built around. Say Cancer is on the cusp: the Moon is the ruler, and a Moon in your 4th house would tie the daily work to home, whether that means a desk in the spare room or a shift in the family shop.

Health and the body in the 6th house

A birth chart cannot name an illness, rule one out or say what is wrong with a body. Questions about symptoms, medicines or pain go to a doctor, since an astrologer or an app cannot answer them, and nothing on this page is medical advice.

What we can describe is how the books read the house. Lilly gives it "sickness, its quality and cause" and the lower belly and intestines. Modern writers shift the emphasis to habits: sleep, food, exercise and how stress is handled. A planet here is not a symptom and a hard one is not a warning; it marks where a routine tends to matter in the reading.

Daily work and the 10th house

The 6th and the 10th both speak about work, but they cover different halves of it. The 10th house is the career side: the profession, the standing, what you are known for. This house is the daily side: the tasks, the hours, the people at the next desk and the timesheet at the end of the week. Someone can have a grand career and a chaotic Tuesday, and the two houses describe both.

Lilly's list shows whom the house means. Servants, tenants and day laborers worked for the householder, and employees and coworkers are their modern relatives. His small livestock is what astrologers now read as pets, the dog that needs a morning walk and the cat that needs feeding. See all twelve on our houses page.

The 6th house in traditional astrology

Hellenistic astrologers called it Bad Fortune; Chris Brennan, writing in 2013 on the planetary joys, cites Thrasyllus, Valens and Firmicus for the name.

Two rules explain the name. The house is cadent, the weakest of the three kinds, and classical rules give it no view of the 1st: no aspect joins them, which astrologers call being averse. Lilly makes that his reason for calling it unfortunate. Against that, Mars has its joy here, and on the modern side a cadent house counts as background work, the part of life that holds the rest up.

Virgo and Mercury attach to this house in two separate schemes. Lilly names them as its cosignificators, and Alan Leo's early 1900s scheme of natural rulership pairs them with it as well.

Questions about the 6th house

What does the 6th house represent in astrology?

The 6th covers daily work and routine, service, health habits, coworkers and employees, and pets. Hellenistic astrologers named it Bad Fortune, while modern astrologers treat it as the house of the ordinary workday.

Is Mars good in the 6th house?

Mars is the planet with its joy here: Lilly and the Hellenistic astrologers both seat it in this house, and Lilly adds that Mars and Venus together suggest a good physician. A joy marks the place where tradition expects a planet to work well, so the old books do not treat Mars here as a bad omen, though they count it among the malefics, and no planet is barred from the house.

What if I have no planets in my 6th house, or I don't have one?

Everyone has all 12 houses, so every chart has a 6th, with or without planets. In our New York count it was bare in 47% of charts. Begin with the sign that opens it and whichever planet governs that sign, then find where that planet stands.

How is my 6th house worked out?

Type your birth date, the clock time and your city into the tool above; it returns the cusp sign, the ruler and the planets in the house. Counting on your own in Whole Sign, go six signs forward from your rising sign. No rising sign yet? Start with the calculator.

6th house stellium: what does it mean?

A stellium is a cluster of at least three planets in one house, though some astrologers insist on four. In New York, 8% of charts hold that many here. A crowded house of daily work is read as a life organized around routine, service or a job. The planets matter more than the count, since Mercury with Venus reads differently from Saturn with Pluto.

Where is the body in the 6th house?

Lilly assigns it the lower belly and the intestines. It is an old correspondence between houses and body parts and says nothing about your own health. A question about digestion belongs with a doctor.

Chiron in the 6th house: what do astrologers say?

Chiron turned up in 1977, found by Charles Kowal, and our tool leaves it out along with every other body beyond the ten planets. Old textbooks never mention it. Newer writers treat it as a tender spot and as the place where you learn to look after other people. Put in the 6th, that points to daily work and routines: touchiness about burnout or about being useful, and often a pull toward caring jobs. Chiron moves slowly, so people born within a few years share its sign, while the birth time decides the house.

Is the 6th house a bad house?

Its reputation is hard. Hellenistic astrologers called it Bad Fortune, it is cadent, and Lilly calls it unfortunate because it has no aspect to the ascendant. Still, Mars has its joy here, and newer books see in it the background work that keeps a life running. The topics are ordinary ones: routine, coworkers, pets and health habits.

The evening house: how often the 6th is full or empty

Evening is when the Sun stands here. For most New York birthdays that means born between 5:25 p.m. and 9:10 p.m., the hours after work. We cast charts for nearly a century of birthdays in five US cities; the table lists two.

This cusp sign seldom changes between systems: Placidus and Whole Sign give a different one in 25% of New York births, so the sign paragraphs above fit most readers either way. What moves is the planets, with a different set inside in 50% of charts. Up north the house stays bare more often: 53% in Anchorage, 46% in Miami.
