Drive meets the other person: reading Mars in the 7th
Face west at the hour you were born and the degree of the zodiac going down is your descendant, where the 7th house begins. Tradition files spouses, business partners, clients and sworn opponents under this house: everyone who stands across from you. Mars brings what it brings anywhere in a chart, which is appetite, courage and a readiness to fight. Put the two together and astrologers describe someone whose energy is switched on by other people, who feels most alive in a contest or a courtship and who is rarely neutral about a partner.
Modern astrologers add a geometric twist. The 7th is the mirror of the 1st, the house they pair with Aries, Mars's own sign, and the sign they pair with the 7th itself is Libra, where the tradition puts Mars in detriment. That natural-zodiac pairing is a modern scheme, not a rule from the old books, but it explains the usual summary: the warrior sits in the house of diplomacy, across from its own home.
Projection is the standard modern reading. The 7th is where we meet traits we have not claimed, so astrologers say a person with Mars here may notice assertiveness, anger and ambition in partners more than in themselves, or hand the fighting to a partner, an agent or a lawyer.
In the Hellenistic scheme every planet has one house of joy, and the one for Mars is the 6th. The 7th comes straight after it, so Mars here has stepped out of its comfortable house into the house of the other person, which is one way to see why the placement is read as friction. The 7th is also angular, one of the four houses on the chart's crosshairs, and planets there are said to act most visibly.
Bad for marriage? The old verdict and its limits
The old verdict is stern. William Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) lists Libra and the Moon as cosignificators of the 7th, and goes on: "Saturn or Mars unfortunate herein show ill in marriage."
Look at the word "unfortunate." Lilly names Mars as one of two planets that spoil the house when badly placed, and he does not say what a well-placed Mars does. Astrologers who follow him read it as a test of condition: a Mars strong by sign and free of hard aspects from Saturn is a different planet from a weak Mars under pressure. Mars is strong in Aries and Scorpio, its own signs, and in Capricorn, where it is exalted. It is weak in Libra and Taurus, its detriment signs, and weakest in Cancer, where it falls.
Modern writers worry less about whether the marriage happens and more about how arguments go. Mars in the 7th is said to attract strong-willed partners and to make open conflict a feature of the relationship. They list the other side too: a partner who says what they want, a relationship with heat in it, and a person who can hold a position in a negotiation.
Synastry and composite: their Mars in your 7th
Synastry lays one chart over another. When the other person's Mars lands in your 7th house, astrologers call it an overlay and read heat: the person seems bold, direct and a little hard to say no to, and you see them as someone to be challenged by as much as to be close to. Attraction is strong. So is the chance of sparring.
Your 7th belongs to you, so the reading reports your side: you feel provoked, stirred up, drawn to the dare. Whether they feel the same depends on how their Mars sits with your Sun, Venus and Moon, and on how your Mars sits with theirs. Searchers also ask about the reverse, your Mars in their 7th, and there you are the one who stirs them.
Houses are built from your birth time. For the other person a date is enough, since Mars barely moves in a day. Use the synastry chart calculator to place one chart over the other.
In a composite chart, one chart blended from both people for the relationship itself, Mars in the 7th points to a pair that shares energy and friction in equal parts: you get things done together, you argue in the open and the relationship has a competitive streak.
Each sign of Mars in the 7th, one by one
Under Whole Sign houses the sign of Mars here also fixes your rising sign, six signs away: Mars in Capricorn in the 7th means Cancer rising. That puts the sign of Mars's fall on the ascendant and the sign of its exaltation on the descendant. In Placidus the house opens at the descendant itself, so the pairing can break when Mars is near a house edge. The link after each line opens the page for that Mars sign.
♈︎ Mars in Aries in the 7th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
Mars is at full strength in its own sign, so the 7th gets the direct version: you propose the plan before the other person finishes the sentence. Courtship is quick and so are the quarrels, and both are over soon. Michael B. Jordan's Mars, at 22°47′, is in this sign: Placidus counts it in the 7th, Whole Sign in the 8th. Mars in Aries
♉︎ Mars in Taurus in the 7th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
A detriment sign, and a slow-burning one. You tolerate a lot until you do not, and then you plant your feet. Fights tend to be about money, food and who owns what. Mars in Taurus
♊︎ Mars in Gemini in the 7th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
Argument is a form of flirting. You win by wit, text a sharp reply in the middle of a row and enjoy a partner who answers back. Boredom is a worse threat than conflict. Adriana Lima's Mars, at 5°24′, is in this sign: Whole Sign counts it in the 7th, Placidus in the 6th. Mars in Gemini
♋︎ Mars in Cancer in the 7th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
The fall sign. Anger comes out sideways, as the cold dinner or the silent car ride, while the protective side works like a bodyguard for the partner. Saying "I'm angry" plainly is the skill to learn. Mars in Cancer
♌︎ Mars in Leo in the 7th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Proud and loud in love. You fight hard for a partner and expect to be seen doing it, so a quarrel about who got thanked can last a week. Generosity is real here too. Goldie Hawn's Mars, at 2°05′, is here in the Placidus 7th and the Whole Sign 9th. Mars in Leo
♍︎ Mars in Virgo in the 7th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Irritation arrives as precision: the dishwasher loaded wrong, the receipt not filed. Energy goes into fixing, and a partner may feel audited. Say what is bothering you before the list gets long. Jenna Ortega's Mars sits at 18°44′ in this sign and counts as 7th-house only by Whole Sign. Matt Damon's Mars, at 22°36′, is in this sign too: Placidus counts it in the 7th, Whole Sign in the 8th. Gwyneth Paltrow's Mars, at 28°06′, and Simone Biles's, at 27°53′, are two of the three that both systems agree on. Mars in Virgo
♎︎ Mars in Libra in the 7th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
Detriment, and the natural sign of this very house. Mars wants to keep the peace here, so anger goes underground or turns into a debate about fairness. A fight you agreed not to have comes back at a worse moment. Whitney Houston's Mars sits at 8°30′ here; Placidus counts it in the 7th, Whole Sign in the 8th. Adam Driver's Mars, at 0°50′, also sits in this sign, a Placidus 7th and a Whole Sign 9th. Mars in Libra
♏︎ Mars in Scorpio in the 7th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
Its own sign again, with intense, private and possessive feeling. You win by outlasting. Jealousy is the usual warning, and so is a partner who matches your stamina. Mars in Scorpio
♐︎ Mars in Sagittarius in the 7th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
Frank, restless and up for a last-minute road trip. Fights are about freedom and beliefs, and honesty can land as bluntness. A partner from another culture or another coast fits the picture. Mariah Carey's Mars, at 11°40′, is in this sign: Placidus counts it in the 7th, Whole Sign in the 8th. Mars in Sagittarius
♑︎ Mars in Capricorn in the 7th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
Exalted, which tradition counts as Mars at its most disciplined. Ambition is shared, and the partner may be picked almost like a business case. Anger is held in and released on schedule, with a joint plan for the next five years. Julia Roberts's Mars, at 3°45′, is here in the Whole Sign 7th, and so is The Weeknd's, at 13°13′. Albert Einstein's Mars, at 26°55′, is in this sign too, and it is the one Capricorn Mars here that both systems seat in the 7th. Mars in Capricorn
♒︎ Mars in Aquarius in the 7th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
Drake's Mars sits at 8°48′ here, in the 7th under Whole Sign and in the 6th under Placidus. The reading is a cool, friendly kind of challenge: debates, causes, a partner who is also a rebel. Feelings stay detached until they are not. Justin Timberlake's Mars, at 25°19′, is in this sign with the same split. Mars in Aquarius
♓︎ Mars in Pisces in the 7th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
A soft, indirect Mars. Anger turns inward or is acted out through avoidance, and the pull toward partners who need rescuing is strong. Time alone helps you tell your wants from the other person's. Mars in Pisces
Mars passing through your 7th: how long, how often
Astrologers expect a stretch when other people push your buttons and you push theirs: sharper negotiations, arguments that surface instead of simmering, and the nerve to say what you want. It is the time they suggest for settling a dispute with a plan rather than a temper.
Mars is slow, so this transit lasts a season. In our 1930 to 2025 count a typical stay in one sign was 46 days, 8 in 10 lasted 39 to 64 days, and in the longest, a retrograde year, Mars lingered 235 days. A given sign sees Mars again about 640 days later on average, which makes a Whole Sign 7th a rare visit. Placidus houses are uneven, so a Placidus 7th may be a little narrower or wider than a sign and the visit shifts with it.
Where Mars stands against your houses today is on the transit chart. When Mars turns retrograde its stay lengthens, and a loop over your 7th brings the same themes (the argument you shelved, the contract you meant to renegotiate) back for a second pass. Dates for the next loop are on the Mars retrograde page.
Manglik or not: Mars in the 7th and Mangal dosha
In Vedic astrology Mars in the 7th house is one of the placements behind Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha, and a person with the pattern is called Manglik. The usual rule counts Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna, the Vedic ascendant. Many astrologers repeat the count from the Moon and from Venus.
Treat that as a description of a tradition, not a verdict. Schools disagree on which houses count, on whether the Moon and Venus are reference points and on what cancels the effect; Jupiter or Venus joining Mars is a commonly cited cancellation, and others exist. In India the rule belongs to matchmaking, where charts are compared before a match and Manglik status is one item on the list. It is not a forecast about any marriage, and this page does not rule on anyone's chart.
The Vedic wheel is measured against the stars and sits about 24° away from the seasonal wheel our tool uses, with houses reckoned from its own rising sign. Mars is slow, but that shift still carries it to a different sign in most charts, and the lagna moves too. So Mars in the 7th on our tool does not make you Manglik, and Mars elsewhere on it does not clear you. That question needs a Vedic chart.
Vedic astrology has a second yardstick for the same planet. Dig bala, directional strength, described in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, gives Mars its full strength in the 10th house and none in the 4th. The 7th falls between the two, so Mars here is neither at its best nor at its worst by direction. Mahadasha timing, the navamsa chart and Lal Kitab remedies are separate Vedic topics that this page does not cover.
Husband, wife and looks: what Mars describes in a partner
The planet in the 7th is the one astrologers use to sketch a partner, and Mars gives an energetic, direct and competitive outline: someone athletic or restless, quick to react, who takes the lead in a room. The sketch shows what draws you and whom you tend to end up facing. It names no face, no height and no job. Mars's sign and your 7th cusp sign tilt the picture. For the cusp that goes with each rising sign, open the page on the 7th house.
Husband or wife, woman or man, the placement is read the same way in every chart. Questions about a late marriage, a divorce or an early wedding have no answer in one planet. Lilly's line is about marriage going badly in general, and astrologers who try to time a wedding or a split look at far more of the chart and disagree with one another.
Rivals, deals and business partners
Marriage is only part of the 7th, which also holds the people you face openly: business partners, clients, opponents in court, competitors in a league. Mars here is read as meeting those encounters head-on. Negotiations get blunt, a disagreement is aired instead of buried, and a rival brings out your best effort. Careers show up as a leaning toward roles with a contest, a deadline or a customer across the table.
The cost, astrologers say, is a pattern of opposition. If resistance seems to find you everywhere, the 7th also shows what you project, so the useful question is what you bring to the table. A business partner with this energy can be a spark plug and a source of fights over who decides.
Mars in the 7th: three charts in both systems, six in Whole Sign only, six in Placidus only
Among the 143 celebrity charts we hold (Astro-Databank grades the birth times AA, A or B; Mariah Carey is one of the nine B charts, with a time taken from a biography), three have Mars in the 7th in both house systems, and the other twelve are split between them. Albert Einstein, Gwyneth Paltrow and Simone Biles hold it there in both systems, at 26°55′ Capricorn, 28°06′ Virgo and 27°53′ Virgo in that order. Adriana Lima, Drake, Jenna Ortega, Julia Roberts, Justin Timberlake and The Weeknd are the Whole Sign cases: Mars at 5°24′ Gemini, 8°48′ Aquarius, 18°44′ Virgo, 3°45′ Capricorn, 25°19′ Aquarius and 13°13′ Capricorn in that order, which Placidus drops into the 6th because its 7th house starts further along. Adam Driver, Goldie Hawn, Mariah Carey, Matt Damon, Michael B. Jordan and Whitney Houston are the Placidus cases: Mars at 0°50′ Libra, 2°05′ Leo, 11°40′ Sagittarius, 22°36′ Virgo, 22°47′ Aries and 8°30′ Libra in that order, while Whole Sign files the last four under the 8th and the first two under the 9th.
Drake's chart is the sample in the tool above. Mars in Aquarius is neither one of its strong signs (Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn) nor one of its weak ones (Libra, Taurus, Cancer), so that chart adds no verdict from the sign. Adriana Lima's Gemini, the Virgo Marses of Gwyneth Paltrow and Simone Biles, two of the three here under both systems, Jenna Ortega's Virgo and Justin Timberlake's Aquarius, which repeats Drake's sign, are no verdict either. Julia Roberts's Capricorn is the sign of exaltation, the strongest Mars in the list, and only Whole Sign counts it in the 7th. Albert Einstein's Mars is exalted as well, and it is the strong one that both systems agree on. The Weeknd's Mars is in the same sign, ten degrees later, with the same split between the two systems. Carey's Sagittarius, Hawn's Leo and Matt Damon's Virgo are the same kind of case among the Placidus charts, with no verdict either way. The other three Placidus charts sit at the two extremes. Aries is Mars's own sign, so Michael B. Jordan's Mars is a strong one that Placidus counts in the 7th. Libra is Mars's detriment and also the sign the modern scheme pairs with the 7th house, so Whitney Houston's Mars is a weak one standing in the house's own sign. Adam Driver's Mars, also in Libra, is the same weak one, which Placidus counts in the 7th and Whole Sign puts in the 9th. Fifteen chart readings settle nothing about the placement itself. They do show that a list of famous people with Mars in the 7th has different names depending on which system drew it.

Questions about Mars in the 7th house
Is Mars in the 7th house always Manglik?
By the common rule it counts, because the 7th house is among the six counted from the lagna. Schools differ, cancellations exist (Jupiter or Venus with Mars is a commonly cited one) and a Vedic lagna is not the Western ascendant, because Vedic charts are sidereal. It is a matchmaking question, not a forecast.
Does Mars in the 7th house mean divorce or a late marriage?
No. The one old line is Lilly's warning that an unfortunate Mars shows ill in marriage, and it says nothing of divorce or timing. No single placement sets a wedding date or ends a marriage.
My Mars is in Capricorn in the 7th. Does that change things?
It improves the condition. Capricorn is where Mars is exalted, so astrologers read a disciplined, goal-driven Mars and not an unfortunate one. Aries and Scorpio, its own signs, are also strong, while Libra, Taurus and Cancer are the weak ones.
Will a partner be aggressive if Mars is in my 7th?
Not as a rule. Astrologers read a taste for energetic, outspoken partners, and some read projection: you see in them the anger you keep out of sight in yourself. How either of you behaves depends on far more than one planet.
What remedies exist for Mars in the 7th house?
This page gives none. The remedy lists you find online come from Vedic and Lal Kitab traditions, and a birth chart is not a diagnosis that needs treating. The plain reading is practical: if the placement matches your life, learn how you fight and name what you want before the anger does it for you.
How long does Mars stay in the 7th house on a transit?
Mars's typical stay in a sign was 46 days between 1930 and 2025, with eight in ten stays lasting 39 to 64 days. The longest, in a retrograde year, ran 235 days. It comes back to the same sign about every 640 days.
Why does one chart put Mars in my 6th house and another in my 7th?
The two sites count houses differently. Placidus opens the 7th at the descendant itself; Whole Sign opens it where the sign begins. When Mars is close to the line the two give different houses, as in the charts of Adriana Lima, Drake, Jenna Ortega, Julia Roberts, Justin Timberlake and The Weeknd (Whole Sign 7th, Placidus 6th) and Adam Driver, Goldie Hawn, Mariah Carey, Matt Damon, Michael B. Jordan and Whitney Houston (Placidus 7th, Whole Sign 8th). Our tool shows both.
A solar return puts Mars in my 7th. Should I worry?
No. Astrologers read a year when partnerships, negotiations and open disputes take center stage, with more heat than usual. Each year the Sun comes back to its birth degree, and the chart for that moment is the solar return. Draw the chart for your birthday with the solar return calculator.

Shares of New York births with Mars here
Take every New York date from 1930 through 2025, 35,064 of them, and cast one chart for each. Mars sits in the 7th in 8.5% under Placidus and in 8.2% under Whole Sign, with both systems agreeing on 4.0%. Of the Placidus hits, 53% land elsewhere in Whole Sign, so a Placidus list and a Whole Sign list of people with this placement share only part of their names.
Mars wanders far from the Sun, so unlike Venus it hints at no time of day. Among the Placidus cases, the Sun's house varies from 3% to 16% across the twelve, so any hour can carry the placement. That is why the table below drops the typical-time column and gives only the shares for the five cities.
| City | Placidus | Whole Sign | Both |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami 26° N | 8.4% | 8.2% | 4.1% |
| Los Angeles 34° N | 8.4% | 8.2% | 4.0% |
| New York 41° N | 8.5% | 8.2% | 4.0% |
| Seattle 48° N | 8.5% | 7.9% | 3.8% |
| Anchorage 61° N | 8.6% | 7.7% | 3.4% |

Astrology is a symbolic tradition, not a science; nothing here predicts a wedding, a breakup or your partner's temper. Positions come from the astronomy-engine ephemeris in the tropical zodiac; house cusps are Placidus unless stated, checked against five published charts to within 0.02°. More in How we work.
