Venus at the midheaven: what the placement means
The 10th house begins at the midheaven, the point of the ecliptic that stood highest in the sky above your birthplace. It covers career, public role, reputation and the person you answer to. Venus gives it a different tone from the usual ambition story. She stands for pleasure, cooperation and what people find attractive, so the tradition pictures someone who rises by being liked and by making a workplace easier to be in.
In the modern scheme the 10th belongs to Capricorn, the sign of Saturn, a planet of discipline and long climbs. Venus and Saturn make an odd couple. You may want recognition and a calm, pleasant job at once, and it is worth knowing which one wins on a bad day.
The 10th is an angle, like the 1st, 4th and 7th, and the old books rank angles above every other house for strength, so a planet there is on show. Others meet this Venus in your public manner. A colleague may call you diplomatic, stylish or easy to work with long before hearing anything about your private life.
Where the house starts also differs by system. Whole Sign takes the entire sign that holds the midheaven. Placidus starts the house at the exact midheaven degree, so a Venus a few degrees short of it lands in the 9th. You can look up your own midheaven on the midheaven page.
Strong or weak? How Venus does in the 10th
The Western answer is mostly yes: Venus counts as a benefic, and a benefic on an angle is read as helpful. The English astrologer William Lilly named Capricorn and Mars as the 10th house's cosignificators in 1647, and wrote that "either Jupiter or the Sun do much fortunate this house when they are posited therein." Venus is not on his list, so the old books do not single her out here. They treat her as a friendly planet in a visible place.
Vedic astrology disagrees about strength, and that is the part most pages skip. Its directional strength, called dig bala, is full for the Sun and Mars in the 10th and full for Venus and the Moon in the 4th. The 10th is opposite the 4th, which places Venus at the point of zero directional strength. So the same house is the best seat for Mars and the weakest direction for Venus. A Vedic reader leans on her sign and aspects to rescue the placement.
Sign matters in both traditions. Venus is strong in Taurus and Libra (her own signs) and Pisces (exalted). She is weaker in Aries and Scorpio, her detriment signs, and weakest in Virgo, the sign of her fall. People also ask about exaltation. It belongs to a sign, not a house, so the 10th cannot exalt Venus by itself. The modern caution is about image. If the job asks you to be pleasant all day, the 10th house Venus can leave you tired of a role you never chose.
Synastry: their Venus in your career house
Say the other person's Venus lands in your 10th. Astrologers read an admirer of what you do, someone happy to be seen with you. They like your public side, and you may find they help your standing: introductions, praise, a good word to the right person. The risk is a relationship that gets tangled with work.
Turn it around, with your Venus in their 10th, and you are the admirer. Searchers want to know who feels it more. A house belongs to the chart that owns it, so the reading is about how that person experiences it: supported and seen. Whether the other person is equally attached is a question for the planets that link the two charts.
Only your birth time matters for this overlay, because the houses are yours; their Venus barely moves in a day. The overlay tool in our synastry calculator does the placing. A composite chart takes the midpoints of two charts, and Venus in its 10th is read as a pair people admire, with a shared life that has a public side.
Twelve versions of Venus at the top of the chart
Her sign tells you how the career charm is expressed, and in Whole Sign houses it also fixes your rising sign, nine signs back: Venus in Libra in the 10th means Capricorn rising. Placidus can shift the pairing when Venus is close to a house edge. The link at the end of each entry opens that sign's own page.
♈︎ Venus in Aries in the 10th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
Detriment sign. The charm is brisk and competitive, the kind that pitches first and apologizes later. You may start businesses or lead from the front, and impatience with slow approvals is the usual cost. Kurt Russell's Venus, at 25°25′, is here and makes the 10th by Whole Sign alone. Albert Einstein's, at 16°59′, is in the 10th under both systems. Venus in Aries
♉︎ Venus in Taurus in the 10th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
Steady and patient, as in any home sign of Venus. The tradition links it with work involving money, food, fabrics, gardens and music. A good reputation builds slowly here and is hard to dent. Tim Curry's Venus, at 17°45′, is here in the 10th under both systems. Stephen Curry's, at 9°15′, shares the sign and the placement. Jessica Alba's Venus, at 14°02′, falls here and makes the 10th only under Whole Sign. Venus in Taurus
♊︎ Venus in Gemini in the 10th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Careers of talk and variety: writing, teaching, sales, anything with a stream of contacts. You can keep two jobs going, and a public reputation for wit. The risk is a résumé that looks scattered. Frida Kahlo's Venus, at 24°20′, is here, in the 10th under Placidus. Brooke Shields's Venus, at 23°07′, is here in the 10th under both systems. Venus in Gemini
♋︎ Venus in Cancer in the 10th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
A nurturing public image. Astrologers picture work in care, hospitality, food or real estate, where the customers become something like family. Reputation follows your mood more than you would like. Kevin Hart's Venus, at 0°16′, is here in the Placidus 10th. Tom Brady's, at 1°07′, falls in the same sign with the same Whole Sign-only result. Venus in Cancer
♌︎ Venus in Leo in the 10th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
A confident, generous public face that likes an audience. Performance, luxury goods and leadership with a warm hand fit the picture. Praise matters, and being passed over for credit stings. Venus in Leo
♍︎ Venus in Virgo in the 10th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
Her fall sign, and the one where Kim Kardashian's Venus (19°36′) and Robin Williams's (10°13′) sit in the charts below. Here the work habits show care and a sharp eye for flaws. The reading is of a perfectionist who earns respect through detail and doubts the beauty of the result. Venus in Virgo
♎︎ Venus in Libra in the 10th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Home again, and a natural fit for law, design, diplomacy and partnership firms. You make rivals comfortable. Deciding who to say no to is the hard part. Emma Stone's Venus, at 9°20′, is here in the Placidus 10th. Jungkook's Venus, at 17°20′, is here too, in the Whole Sign 10th. Venus in Libra
♏︎ Venus in Scorpio in the 10th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Detriment sign. Public presence is magnetic and private, and tradition notes interest in finance, research, healing or anything behind closed doors. Power struggles at work are the warning. Dakota Johnson's Venus, at 25°40′, is here in the Placidus 10th. Goldie Hawn's, at 11°39′, is here too, in the Placidus 10th. Matt Damon's, at 22°40′, belongs to this sign too and reaches the 10th by Whole Sign alone. Ian Somerhalder's, at 9°16′, reaches the 10th by Whole Sign alone, and Zac Efron's, at 9°56′, by Placidus alone. Venus in Scorpio
♐︎ Venus in Sagittarius in the 10th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Wide horizons: publishing, travel, education, law, a brand with a mission. You are liked for your openness. Staying inside one company for decades does not come easily. Mac Miller's Venus, at 23°00′, is placed here and falls in the Placidus 10th. Venus in Sagittarius
♑︎ Venus in Capricorn in the 10th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
The natural sign of the 10th, so Venus meets Saturn at home. The picture is of lasting authority, understated style and a career that peaks late. Warmth can be hidden behind competence. James Dean's Venus, at 2°12′, counts as a 10th-house one in Whole Sign only. Venus in Capricorn
♒︎ Venus in Aquarius in the 10th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
Unconventional work and an unusual public image. Astrologers point to technology, causes, group projects and a reputation built among peers, not bosses. Detached manner can cool a room. Venus in Aquarius
♓︎ Venus in Pisces in the 10th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
Exalted, so the tradition rates this as the finest Venus can be. Art, music, film, healing and charity suit it. The danger is a fuzzy plan and a public image that others fill in for you. Kristen Stewart's Venus, at 3°25′, is here in the 10th under both systems. Paul Mescal's Venus, at 22°12′, is here too, in the Placidus 10th and the Whole Sign 9th. Vincent van Gogh's, at 28°03′, has the same split. Venus in Pisces
Transiting Venus over your midheaven
When Venus crosses your 10th house on her way around the zodiac, astrologers read a pleasant spell at work. Bosses are more approachable, you look good in a meeting, and a pitch or an interview lands better. It is also a decent time to ask for a favor that needs goodwill.
Expect a short window. Over the 96 years we measured, Venus spent a median 25 days in a sign, and eight stays in ten fell between 24 and 32 days. The longest, a retrograde year, took 126 days. A given sign gets a visit about every 345 days. A Placidus 10th house is rarely exactly 30° wide, so the visit there can be shorter or longer than the sign's.
The transit chart will place Venus on your houses for any date. Dates on the Venus retrograde page matter too: a retrograde in the 10th reads as a moment to review your professional image rather than launch a new one.
Career and money: what jobs does Venus in the 10th point to?
People ask about career options, government jobs and business. Astrologers tie Venus to beauty, art, fashion, hospitality, diplomacy, mediation, music, design and any work that sells pleasure or goodwill. In the 10th, these become a public role: a designer with a known name, a negotiator who is trusted by both sides. Nothing in a chart assigns you a profession, and the sign of Venus, the ruler of your 10th cusp and the planets beside her change the picture a lot.
Reputation matters more than a job title. The tradition says this Venus helps you be received well, and so it helps in jobs where first impressions, contact lists and tact count. The less flattering reading: you can be underestimated, since a pleasant manner hides ambition. Read the 10th house page for the cusp and its ruler.
Love, marriage and the spouse with Venus in the 10th
Marriage is not a 10th-house matter, so astrologers read love here indirectly. You may meet partners at work or through your public activity, you might be drawn to someone with status, and your image can matter to your partner as much as your private self. Some writers add that a high-profile career may compete with home life, since the 10th sits opposite the 4th, the house of home. Treat that as a theme to watch, not a forecast.
Questions about the spouse's looks, the age of marriage or whether it will be a love match have no answer in this placement alone. For those, astrologers look at the 7th house, its ruler and the planets in it. The Venus in the 7th house page covers that side.
The Vedic reading: Venus in the 10th and directional strength
In a Vedic chart the 10th house is called the karma bhava. As noted above, dig bala places Venus at zero directional strength here and the Sun and Mars at full strength. Many Vedic readers look instead at the strength of Venus by sign and at which planets aspect her. The Venus mahadasha, the long Vedic planetary period ruled by Venus, and the dasamsa (D10), a divisional chart used for career, come up often too. Both are Vedic tools for timing and sub-charts, which we leave to Vedic writers.
Vedic work uses the sidereal zodiac, which runs about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used here, and counts its houses from the sidereal rising sign. A Venus in your 10th on one chart can land in the 9th or 11th on the other.
Pisces, Gemini, Leo and Taurus in both systems, more signs in one: celebrity Venuses in the 10th
Twenty-four charts among our 143 celebrity ones have Venus in the 10th by at least one count, and only one of their birth times is graded B: Brooke Shields's, taken from a biography. Both systems put Venus in the 10th for six of them, Albert Einstein, Brooke Shields, Kristen Stewart, Nicole Kidman, Stephen Curry and Tim Curry, at 16°59′ Aries, 23°07′ Gemini, 3°25′ Pisces, 14°23′ Leo, 9°15′ Taurus and 17°45′ Taurus in that order; Pisces is the sign where Venus is exalted, Taurus is her own sign, Aries is her detriment, and Gemini and Leo carry no dignity for her. The other eighteen qualify through one system each. Ian Somerhalder, James Dean, Jessica Alba, Jungkook, Kim Kardashian, Kurt Russell, Matt Damon and Tom Brady show up under Whole Sign only, with Venus at 9°16′ Scorpio, 2°12′ Capricorn, 14°02′ Taurus, 17°20′ Libra, 19°36′ Virgo, 25°25′ Aries, 22°40′ Scorpio and 1°07′ Cancer in that order; Placidus puts all of them in the 9th except Kurt Russell's, which it puts in the 11th. Dakota Johnson, Emma Stone, Frida Kahlo, Goldie Hawn, Kevin Hart, Mac Miller, Paul Mescal, Robin Williams, Vincent van Gogh and Zac Efron show up under Placidus only, with Venus at 25°40′ Scorpio, 9°20′ Libra, 24°20′ Gemini, 11°39′ Scorpio, 0°16′ Cancer, 23°00′ Sagittarius, 22°12′ Pisces, 10°13′ Virgo, 28°03′ Pisces and 9°56′ Scorpio in that order; Whole Sign puts seven of the ten in the 11th, Goldie Hawn's in the 12th and the two Pisces ones, Paul Mescal's and Vincent van Gogh's, in the 9th.
Stewart's is the chart the tool above uses as its example. Her midheaven is at 22°17′ Aquarius, which Whole Sign counts as the 9th house, and Venus is in Pisces, the 10th. Placidus starts the 10th house at the midheaven degree itself, so Venus, about 11° later, is in it as well. Two of the eighteen single-system charts are Virgo, the sign of her fall, and a fall sign for Venus in the house of reputation is an unusual match for the tradition's "likable public image". Emma Stone's is the opposite case, Libra, Venus's own sign, and so is Jungkook's, whose midheaven is Libra as well, though his Venus stands short of the exact midheaven degree, so Placidus keeps it in the 9th. Kevin Hart's Venus has only just entered Cancer, and his midheaven sits in Gemini, the sign before it. That is a reason to read sign and house together. Jessica Alba's Taurus is Venus's own sign too, in the Whole Sign 10th only. Stephen Curry's Taurus is her own sign as well. Dakota Johnson's, Goldie Hawn's, Matt Damon's, Ian Somerhalder's and Zac Efron's Venus in Scorpio are the other detriment signs among the eighteen, together with Kurt Russell's Aries. In fourteen of the eighteen single-system charts the Placidus house is one earlier than the Whole Sign house. Hawn's, Mescal's, Russell's and van Gogh's are the exceptions. Russell's Venus, at 25°25′ of Aries, is a Whole Sign 10th that Placidus moves forward to the 11th. Sagittarius rises for Hawn, which makes Scorpio the 12th house by Whole Sign, two places from the Placidus 10th. Mescal's Venus, at 22°12′ of Pisces, stands just over thirty degrees past his midheaven, 22°10′ of Aquarius, so Placidus keeps it in the 10th while Whole Sign puts it in the 9th. Van Gogh's Venus, at 28°03′ of Pisces, follows Mescal's pattern, a Placidus 10th and a Whole Sign 9th. Nicole Kidman's Venus, in Leo with the midheaven at 7°02′ of the same sign, is in the 10th whichever system you use, and so are Brooke Shields's, in Gemini under a Gemini midheaven, and the Taurus Venuses of Tim Curry and Stephen Curry, as is Albert Einstein's, in Aries. Twenty-four charts cannot settle anything either way.

Questions about Venus in the 10th house
What does it mean to have Venus in the 10th house?
Your Venus stood near the highest point of the sky at birth. Astrologers read a likable public image, a pull toward careers in beauty, people or harmony, and a wish for work that feels pleasant. That is the traditional reading, and it promises nothing.
Is Venus in the 10th house good or bad?
Western astrologers lean good, since Venus counts as a benefic and the 10th is an angle. Vedic astrology notes that Venus has zero directional strength in the 10th. Her sign and aspects decide how it plays out in either system.
Is Venus exalted in the 10th house?
No. Exaltation is about the sign: Venus is exalted in Pisces. A Pisces Venus can fall in the 10th, as Kristen Stewart's does, and then the two facts add up, but the house alone never makes her exalted.
What careers suit Venus in the 10th house?
Astrologers mention design, art, fashion, music, hospitality, law and diplomacy, anything with beauty or goodwill at its center. A chart cannot assign a job. Check the sign of Venus and your 10th house cusp as well.
What if Venus is conjunct Jupiter, the Sun or Uranus in the 10th house?
Astrologers blend the meanings. Jupiter adds luck and generosity, the Sun adds visibility, Uranus adds an unusual or sudden public image. Conjunctions with Mercury or Neptune are read as wit and charm, or as glamor and blurred edges.
Can I have Venus in the 10th house with a night birth?
It is rare. The house is overhead at midday, and Venus stays near the Sun, so the placement belongs mostly to births within a few hours of noon.
Is a love marriage likely with Venus in the 10th house?
The tradition does not tie the 10th house to the type of marriage. Searches ask about it often, but the 7th house and its ruler are the places astrologers check for that.
Placidus or Whole Sign: which one decides if Venus is in my 10th?
Neither is official; astrologers use both. Placidus ties the 10th to the exact midheaven degree and Whole Sign gives the entire sign. When Venus is near the midheaven the systems disagree, as in seven of the charts above: Kim Kardashian's Venus is in the 10th only in Whole Sign, Dakota Johnson's, Emma Stone's, Frida Kahlo's, Kevin Hart's, Mac Miller's and Robin Williams's only in Placidus, while Kristen Stewart's is there in both. Our tool shows both.

Midday births and the odds of Venus in the 10th
We built a chart for each of 35,064 New York dates and found Venus in the 10th for 8.4% of Placidus charts and 8.4% of Whole Sign charts. Only 3.7% had her there in both. Of every 100 Placidus cases, 56 sat elsewhere once Whole Sign drew the houses.
The 10th house is overhead, so a birth with Venus there is a birth near noon. Venus never strays far from the Sun, and the Sun sat in the 9th, 10th or 11th house in 82% of the Placidus cases. The middle 80% of these New York birth moments fall between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., centered on 11:30 a.m. If you were born at night, this placement is unlikely.

Every date from 1930 to 2025 (35,064 per city), one moment of local clock time per date, spread evenly over the day. Shares of clock time, not of people: births are not spread perfectly evenly over the day. "Typical time" is the median local birth time among those moments with Venus in the 10th (Placidus).
