What your Venus sign means
Venus is the planet astrologers use for love, attraction, pleasure and taste. Your Sun sign describes the person you are; your Venus sign describes what you reach for in a partner and how you show affection. It covers what you spend money on for the fun of it, the clothes and rooms you like, and the compliments that land with you.
In the tradition Venus rules two signs, Taurus and Libra. In Taurus it is the earthy side of Venus: comfort, touch, food and things that last. Libra brings out the social side, fairness, partnership and good manners. Venus is exalted in Pisces, where love turns forgiving and romantic. In the two signs opposite its homes, Aries and Scorpio, it is in detriment, and in Virgo, opposite Pisces, it is in fall. Those labels mean Venus works less easily there, and they say nothing about how your love life goes.

Why your Venus sign is close to your Sun sign
Venus orbits inside the Earth's orbit, so from here it never wanders far from the Sun. It swings out to one side, back past the Sun and out to the other. The widest gap on any day from 1930 to 2025 was 47.2°.
That leaves you five possible Venus signs: your Sun sign and the two signs on either side of it. In our count of birth dates, Venus is in the Sun sign on 23.6%, one sign away on 58.4% and two signs away on only 18%. A Leo can have Venus in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra. A Leo with Venus in Capricorn does not exist.
The same swing makes Venus a morning star or an evening star. When it stands ahead of the Sun in the zodiac, it sets after the Sun and shines in the evening sky; when it stands behind, it rises before dawn. Births split almost evenly, 49.9% under an evening Venus. The calculator tells you which one you had.
Why some Venus signs are more common
If Venus spent equal time in every sign, each would hold 8.33% of birthdays. It does not. Aries leads with 9.74% and Scorpio follows with 9.59%, while Libra (7.14%) and Pisces (7.17%) are the rarest. The gap between first and last is 2.60 percentage points.
Retrograde explains it. About every 19 months Venus turns back for 41 to 43 days, and the sign where that happens gets a long visit. The longest in our range lasted 126 days: Venus stayed in Gemini from April 4, 2012 to August 7, 2012. The loops fall in nearly the same signs every eight years, so the long visits keep landing in the same places. From 1930 to 2025 a Venus retrograde began in Aries 9 times and in Scorpio 8 times, and never once in Libra or Pisces. An average visit lasted 34 days in Aries and 26 in Libra.
The two most common Venus signs, Aries and Scorpio, are the two signs where the tradition puts Venus in detriment. Its home signs and its exaltation, Libra, Taurus and Pisces, are three of the four rarest. That follows from the current eight-year cycle and tells you nothing about anyone's love life. In our time, a so-called difficult Venus is the ordinary one.
Venus retrograde in your birth chart
Venus was retrograde on 7.2% of birth dates from 1930 to 2025, about one person in 14. It comes in short bursts: 60 retrograde periods in 96 years, each about six weeks long, and some years have none at all.
Astrologers read a retrograde Venus at birth as love that looks back before it moves on. It trusts slowly, returns to old loves or old tastes, and sets its own standards instead of borrowing them. That is a reading from the tradition. The calculator shows whether your Venus was retrograde and which day of the loop you were born on.

Venus signs by element
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), 25.4% of birth dates: love shows as enthusiasm. You make the first move, say what you feel and cool off when nothing happens. Aries is the fastest of the three, Leo wants to be adored in public, and Sagittarius needs the most room.
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), 24.5% of birth dates: love is proved by doing. You keep promises, remember details and plan a shared future in practical terms. Taurus wants comfort and touch, Virgo wants to be useful, and Capricorn wants something built to last.
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), 25.2% of birth dates: attraction starts with a conversation. You need someone you can talk to, and a relationship with no new ideas goes stale for you. Gemini flirts with words, Libra looks for a partner of equal weight, and Aquarius wants friendship first.
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), 24.9% of birth dates: you love through closeness and read moods well. Cancer takes care of the people it loves, Scorpio wants all of a partner or nothing, and Pisces forgives fast and can fall for an idea of someone.

Questions about Venus signs
How do I find my Venus sign?
Enter your date of birth in the calculator on this page. On about 956 of every 1,000 birthdays the date alone settles it. On the rest, Venus changed sign that day; the calculator then shows both signs, the hour of the change in Eastern and Pacific time, and asks for your birth time.
Do I need my birth time to find my Venus sign?
Usually not. Venus spends about four weeks in a sign, so only 4.4% of birthdays fall on a day when it changed sign. You need the time for those days, and for your Venus house.
Can Venus be in the same sign as my Sun?
Yes, on 23.6% of birth dates from 1930 to 2025. On another 58.4% Venus is one sign before or after the Sun sign, and on 18% two signs away. Venus is never more than about 47.2° from the Sun, so it can never be three or more signs away.
Is my Venus sign more important than my Sun sign in love?
Astrologers read them together. The Sun describes who you are; Venus describes how you love and what attracts you, so for questions about romance it often says more.
Which Venus signs go well together?
In the tradition, signs of the same element get along most easily: fire with fire, earth with earth, and so on. Fire also pairs well with air, and earth with water. Opposite signs, such as Aries and Libra, attract strongly and need more give and take. Each Venus sign page has its own compatibility section.
Which zodiac sign is Venus' enemy?
Astrology has no enemy signs, but the tradition names the signs where Venus is least at ease: Aries and Scorpio (detriment) and Virgo (fall). Venus is most at home in Taurus and Libra and exalted in Pisces.
What is the most loyal Venus sign?
