What the 7th house means
The 1st house is you; the 7th, directly across the chart, is the other person. Traditional astrologers read it for marriage, business partners, lawsuits and open enemies, meaning rivals you know by name. Modern astrologers add any one-to-one relationship that comes with an agreement: a therapist, an agent, a co-author.
Astrologers often say it describes what you look for in others, including the qualities you do not show yourself. A reserved Capricorn rising with Cancer on the 7th, for example, is drawn to partners who are openly caring.
Whether romance belongs here is argued. Many astrologers put dating and falling in love in the 5th house and keep the 7th for commitment; others read the 7th as the main house of love. Most read both.
Your 7th house sign
The sign on the 7th cusp is the sign opposite your rising sign: Aries rising has Libra on the 7th, Taurus rising has Scorpio, and so on. If you know your rising sign, you already know it. If not, our rising sign calculator will give it to you.
♈︎ Aries on the 7th (Libra rising)
Partners who act first and say what they think draw you, and you may let them lead in fights as well as in plans. Mars rules the house, so friction tends to come with the relationship and keeps both people awake. A Libra rising who keeps the peace may find a partner who argues back a relief.
♉︎ Taurus on the 7th (Scorpio rising)
You look for a steady, physical partner who is slow to change their mind. Venus rules the house, so agreements matter to you in concrete form: shared money, a lease, a routine you both keep. Scorpio rising often wants calm from a partner, which it finds hard to produce alone.
♊︎ Gemini on the 7th (Sagittarius rising)
You want someone to talk to. This sign prefers a curious, quick partner, and it can mean more than one important relationship, or a partner who travels or changes jobs often. Mercury rules the house, so the way a partner writes and texts tells you a lot.
♋︎ Cancer on the 7th (Capricorn rising)
A partner is where you look for care and a home, and you may be the one who gets looked after. The Moon rules the house, so partnerships move with moods and family ties enter the marriage early. For a self-reliant Capricorn rising, the lesson here is accepting help.
♌︎ Leo on the 7th (Aquarius rising)
Warm, visible partners who like a little attention appeal to you. The Sun rules the house, and you may feel most yourself with someone else in the spotlight beside you. You test a partner on loyalty and generosity.
♍︎ Virgo on the 7th (Pisces rising)
You choose practical, careful partners, people who fix things. Mercury rules the house, and a relationship runs on daily habits you share. The tradition names one risk: a partner who criticizes, or who becomes a project to be improved.
♎︎ Libra on the 7th (Aries rising)
Here the house sits in its own sign, ruled by Venus. You want fairness, good manners and some beauty in a partner, and you will negotiate to keep the peace. Aries rising, used to acting alone, is asked to learn the habit of asking first.
♏︎ Scorpio on the 7th (Taurus rising)
Depth, loyalty and some intensity are what you want in a partner, and casual arrangements rarely hold you. Mars rules the house in the tradition and Pluto in modern astrology. Trust, jealousy and joint money are the issues that come up.
♐︎ Sagittarius on the 7th (Gemini rising)
Honest, restless partners who are a little foreign to your world appeal to you, perhaps from another country or faith. Jupiter rules the house, and a partner who needs freedom suits you better than one who needs reassurance.
♑︎ Capricorn on the 7th (Cancer rising)
A serious, reliable partner, often older or further along in life, is what you look for. Saturn rules the house, so commitments here may come late or be tested by time. What lasts is built slowly, with clear roles.
♒︎ Aquarius on the 7th (Leo rising)
You want a partner who is also a friend, independent and a bit unusual. Saturn rules the house in the tradition and Uranus in modern astrology. Space inside the relationship matters to you, as does a shared cause.
♓︎ Pisces on the 7th (Virgo rising)
Gentle, imaginative partners attract you, and you may idealize them at first. Jupiter rules the house in the tradition and Neptune in modern astrology. The tradition warns about rescuing a partner or being rescued, and it praises compassion on both sides.
Planets in the 7th house
A planet here colors your partnerships more directly than the sign does. Each of the ten planets sits in this house in about 8% of charts in our count, as you would expect with twelve houses. The links under each planet go to the matching paragraph of our page for that planet in your sign.
☉ Sun in the 7th
With the Sun in the 7th you find yourself through other people, and partnership is central to how you see your life. You may choose a partner with a strong personality, or work best in a duo. Tradition reads the Sun here as a person who shines more in company than alone.
☽ Moon in the 7th
The Moon in the 7th makes you need a partner emotionally: your mood depends on how things are between you. Either you look for someone who takes care of you or you take care of them. Relationships tend to change with your phases of life.

☿ Mercury in the 7th
Conversation sits at the center of partnership with Mercury in the 7th. You want a partner you can talk and plan with, and contracts, negotiations and written agreements show up in your life. You may meet partners through work or study.

♀ Venus in the 7th
Traditional astrologers count Venus as a benefic and read it in the 7th as a good sign for partnership. It also rules Libra, the natural sign of this house. You are charming in one-to-one meetings and value harmony with a partner, sometimes enough to avoid needed arguments.

♂ Mars in the 7th
Mars in the 7th brings energy and conflict to partnership. You may attract assertive or competitive partners, or meet your rivals face to face. Tradition counts Mars as a malefic, so a hard Mars here is read as quarrels, and a well-placed one as a partner who fights on your side.

♃ Jupiter in the 7th
Luck through other people is the usual reading of Jupiter in the 7th: generous partners, helpful business allies, a marriage that widens your world. Jupiter is the greater benefic in traditional astrology. The caution is to expect too much from a partner.
♄ Saturn in the 7th
Saturn in the 7th has the hardest reputation of the ten, and it is often read as delay or difficulty in marriage. A fairer reading is that partnership is serious for you: you commit late or carefully, choose older or more settled partners, and your relationships last when they are built on duty. In traditional astrology Saturn is the greater malefic.
♅ Uranus in the 7th
Uranus in the 7th wants freedom inside partnership. Relationships may start suddenly, take an unusual shape or end abruptly. Independent, original people draw you, and you may do better with a partner who does not need you every day.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♆ Neptune in the 7th
Neptune in the 7th brings idealism to partnership. You can see the best in a partner, sometimes more than is there, and relationships with an artistic or spiritual side suit you. Astrologers warn about confusion in contracts and about partners who need rescuing.
By sign: Aries · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♇ Pluto in the 7th
Pluto in the 7th makes partnership intense: power struggles, strong attraction, relationships that change you. You may meet partners at turning points of your life. Control and trust are the themes; a relationship that survives them tends to go deep.
By sign: Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius
What an empty 7th house means
It is ordinary. In our count of New York births, the 7th held no planet in 48% of charts, one planet in 32%, two in 13% and three or more in 7%. Empty does not mean no partner or a late marriage. Astrologers read an empty house through the sign on its cusp and the ruler of that sign, which is the next section.
Your 7th house ruler
The ruler of the 7th is the planet that rules the sign on its cusp. Its sign and house show where partners come into your life and what you look for in them. With Gemini on the 7th, Mercury is the ruler; if your Mercury is in the 10th house, astrologers would say you may meet a partner through work.
| 7th house sign | Ruler | Rising sign |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Mars | Libra |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Venus | Scorpio |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Mercury | Sagittarius |
| ♋︎ Cancer | Moon | Capricorn |
| ♌︎ Leo | Sun | Aquarius |
| ♍︎ Virgo | Mercury | Pisces |
| ♎︎ Libra | Venus | Aries |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | Taurus |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | Jupiter | Gemini |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | Saturn | Cancer |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | Leo |
| ♓︎ Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Virgo |
The ruler does not depend on the house system. Placidus and Whole Sign both start the 7th from the descendant's sign, so the sign and its ruler agree; only the planets inside the house can change. Near the descendant sits one more calculated point, the vertex, which astrologers read as the place of fated meetings. For the partner you commit to, many astrologers also check the asteroid Juno.
Someone else's planets in your 7th house
In synastry, the comparison of two charts, astrologers place a partner's planets in your houses. When their Sun, Moon or Venus falls in your 7th, the tradition reads it as a person you see as a partner from early on. This needs both birth times. A partner's planets in your 7th describe how the relationship feels to you, and they say nothing certain about how long it will last.
The 7th house in traditional astrology
Because it starts at the descendant, it is one of the four angular houses, and planets there show plainly in your life. Old Latin lists call it Uxor, the spouse.

Questions about the 7th house
What does the 7th house represent in astrology?
The 7th house is the house of partners: marriage and long-term relationships, business partners, people you sign contracts with, and open rivals. Its cusp is the descendant, the point opposite your ascendant, so it describes the people you meet face to face.
How do I find my 7th house?
You need your birth date, exact time and city. Put them in the tool above: it shows the sign on your 7th cusp, the planet that rules it and any planets inside. That sign is always the one opposite your rising sign.
What if my 7th house is empty?
Nothing is missing. In our count for New York births, the 7th was empty in 48% of charts. An empty 7th is read through the sign on its cusp and that sign's ruler: where the ruler sits in your chart shows where your partnerships tend to come from.
Which planet is bad in the 7th house?
Traditional astrology calls Mars and Saturn the malefics, so Mars in the 7th is read as conflict and Saturn as delay or hard lessons in partnership. That is the tradition's view, not a prediction: a well-placed Saturn in the 7th is also read as a lasting, serious marriage. Jupiter and Venus, the benefics, are the placements the tradition likes best here.
Does the 7th house show who I will marry?
Astrologers read this house for the kind of partner you are drawn to and how you behave in a committed relationship. It does not name a person or a date, and nothing in a chart can promise a marriage.
What is my 7th house ruler?
It is the planet that rules the sign on your 7th house cusp: Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius, and Mars for Scorpio. Modern astrologers add Pluto for Scorpio, Uranus for Aquarius and Neptune for Pisces. The tool above names yours and the house it sits in.
Why do two sites show different planets in my 7th house?
Because they use different house systems. The 7th house sign and its ruler are the same in Placidus and Whole Sign, since both start the 7th from the descendant's sign. The planets inside can differ: in our New York count the two systems put a different set of planets in the 7th in 50% of charts.
Which is the most important house in astrology?
Traditional astrology ranks the four angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) as the strongest. The 7th is one of them: it starts at the descendant, one of the four angles of the chart. Many astrologers put the 1st and 10th first, but for partnership questions you read the 7th.
What is the difference between the 5th and the 7th house?
Many astrologers put dating, romance and falling in love in the 5th house and commitment, marriage and the legal side of partnership in the 7th. Some writers say flatly that love belongs to the 5th; others read the 7th as the main house of love relationships, so it helps to read both together.

Our numbers: how often the 7th house is full or empty
We worked out a chart for every date from 1930 to 2025 in five US cities and counted the planets in each 7th house. The table shows the two ends of that range, New York and Anchorage.
The farther north, the more often the Placidus 7th is empty: 54% in Anchorage against 47% in Miami. Placidus houses stretch and shrink with latitude, and in Anchorage the 7th is often a narrow house. In about half of all charts, switching from Placidus to Whole Sign changes which planets you have in the 7th, so check which system an app uses before you read a "planet in the 7th" description.
| 7th house, Placidus | New York 41° N | Anchorage 61° N |
|---|---|---|
| empty | 47.8% | 54.1% |
| one planet | 32.1% | 26.9% |
| two planets | 12.9% | 10.4% |
| three or more | 7.2% | 8.6% |
| different planets in Whole Sign | 49.9% | 51.1% |
Every date from 1930 to 2025 (35,064 per city), one moment per date spread evenly over the day. Shares of clock time, not of people, because births are not spread perfectly evenly over the day.
