What the 4th house means
Every chart has a floor, and the 4th is it. The house begins at the IC, the lowest point, and gathers whatever is kept out of public view: the home, the family line, the land under a house and the feeling of having a place to return to. William Lilly's 1647 textbook lists lands, houses, tenements and inheritances, then gardens, fields and orchards, and later astrologers keep all of it and add the emotional base a person grows from.
Across the chart the 10th stands for career and public life, and the pair is read as private against public.
Your 4th house sign
A house key is a small object with a long reach: it opens the door, the kitchen, the habits of a whole household. The sign on the 4th cusp works the same way. Under Whole Sign, count four signs from your rising sign and call the rising sign number one: Aries rising puts Cancer here, Taurus rising puts Leo. Need yours? The rising sign calculator will find it, and the tool shows the Placidus sign beside it.
♈︎ Aries on the 4th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Doors are left open and the house is loud, with someone always arriving or leaving. It is a base for action, a place to start the day from. Independence was expected early. A parent or grandparent may have been a fighter or a pioneer, and the old habit is to move first and settle later.
♉︎ Taurus on the 4th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Everything in the house is built to last, from the solid table to the good bedding and a pantry that is never empty. It is made for rest and food, and people stay in it for decades. What came from childhood is a feeling for security, and a reluctance to leave a house that has become comfortable.
♊︎ Gemini on the 4th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Someone is always talking across rooms, a phone rings and books cover every surface. Exchange is the point of the house: siblings, visitors, ideas. Many moves or two homes are common. The childhood inheritance is curiosity, and the habit of keeping several places in mind at once.
♋︎ Cancer on the 4th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
Here the Moon rules the cusp of its natural house. Shelter is meant in the plainest sense: soft chairs, a full fridge and the family at the table on Sundays. A recipe card in a grandmother's handwriting is the kind of thing kept. Old family feeling travels easily, and so does worry about the people inside.
♌︎ Leo on the 4th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
When guests arrive, the house is ready to host them. The house is a stage for generosity, with the good plates out and the best chair offered. Pride in the family name runs through childhood. A parent who loved an audience, or a household that wanted to be admired, may be part of the memory.
♍︎ Virgo on the 4th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
The counters are clean, the jars are labeled and there is a drawer where the batteries live. The house runs on working order, and things are mended and put back. The sign carries a childhood in which usefulness earned approval, and a habit of tidying that can turn into worry when the house falls short of the list.
♎︎ Libra on the 4th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
The room looks balanced, with a lamp placed just so and flowers on the table. Harmony and sharing come first, and arguments are taken outside or put off. What was carried from childhood is a strong dislike of open conflict at home, and sometimes a parent who kept the peace at a price.
♏︎ Scorpio on the 4th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
The family keeps its secrets: doors stay closed and curtains are drawn. Privacy runs to guarded, and bonds are deep, with loyalty and the occasional grudge. Mars is the older ruler of this sign, Pluto the newer. A heavy family story, spoken or not, may sit under the floorboards.
♐︎ Sagittarius on the 4th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
This household calls itself international even if it is not, with maps on the wall and suitcases in the hall. Freedom is the point, and the house may be large, open or often empty. Early life may include a move abroad, a parent who traveled, or a family belief held loudly.
♑︎ Capricorn on the 4th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
This house is sturdy, planned and paid for. It runs on rules: a schedule, a budget, a chore chart and an expectation of responsibility. Children here tend to grow up quickly. The inheritance is duty, and sometimes a parent who worked hard and showed feeling rarely.
♒︎ Aquarius on the 4th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
In the best sense, this family does not look like the neighbors': unusual friends come to the table, there is a workshop in the garage and the house runs on its own principles. Independence is the value. Saturn is the older ruler of this sign, Uranus the newer. Childhood can hold distance, a lot of freedom, or both.
♓︎ Pisces on the 4th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
A dreamy streak runs through the household, with soft light and music from another room. The house is a sanctuary and sometimes a muddle, with boundaries between members loose. A parent may have been gentle, artistic or hard to pin down, and the child learned to sense moods before words arrived.
Planets in the 4th house
Picture a garden behind the house: some plants are planted on purpose, others arrive on their own, and all of them shape what the yard feels like. A planet in the 4th is something of that kind in the private part of life. Beneath every planet sit links to the pages for that planet in each sign.
☉ Sun in the 4th
Lilly makes the Sun a cosignificator of the 4th, together with Cancer, so the planet has an old claim on the house. The picture is of identity rooted in family and place, with a strong tie to one parent or one home.
☽ Moon in the 4th
The Moon feels at home in the 4th: it is the house of its natural sign in the modern scheme. Moods follow the household, memory is long and the kitchen is the center of things. Childhood rooms stay vivid.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
☿ Mercury in the 4th
Mercury here is a talkative household, with a parent who read aloud or a house full of notes and letters. The mind works best at home, and studying, writing and planning are done at the kitchen table. Moves are frequent in some charts, and papers about property matter.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♀ Venus in the 4th
Venus makes home pleasant on purpose: color, comfort, music and flowers. Family bonds are warm, and the household may have valued beauty or manners. The risk is keeping peace at home by avoiding the conversations that would clear the air.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♂ Mars in the 4th
Mars brings heat to the household: loud kitchens, projects in the garage and a short fuse that clears fast. Early life may have had an energetic or strict parent, or a lot of competition between siblings. Tradition counts Mars a malefic, and the placement is described as friction at home that can also be energy for building and repairing.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♃ Jupiter in the 4th
Jupiter here means a generous household with a large table, many relatives and an open door. The placement is described as roomy, with a home that grows over time and a family that has something to teach.
♄ Saturn in the 4th
Saturn is serious about home: a house with rules, a parent who was strict or absent, a childhood that taught responsibility early. Lilly gives fathers to this house and adds that Saturn, by night, signifies them too. A person here may build a lasting home slowly and with great care.
♅ Uranus in the 4th
Uranus makes home unpredictable: many moves, an unusual household or a parent who was hard to predict. The need for independence starts early.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♆ Neptune in the 4th
Neptune gives home a hazy, dreamy quality: a family with a lot of imagination, a parent who was idealized or hard to read, a house that never quite felt solid. Music, water and art in the home suit the placement. The weak point is blurred boundaries, and unclear family stories.

If your 4th house is empty
Count the charts: 46% of our New York ones have no planet in the 4th under Placidus, so a bare floor is common. A single planet stands here on 33% of dates, two on 14%, and 7% hold three or more. Astrologers then study the cusp sign and whatever planet rules it, which come next.
Your 4th house ruler
At midnight the sky is still working: your 4th house ruler was somewhere in the chart at the moment you were born, and the house it stood in shows where the home life connects to the rest of your story. Capricorn on the 4th gives the house to Saturn. A Saturn standing in the 6th, the house of the workday, ties home to the job: a laptop on the kitchen table, a household run by the clock.
| 4th house sign | Ruler | Rising sign (Whole Sign) |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Mars | Capricorn |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Venus | Aquarius |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Mercury | Pisces |
| ♋︎ Cancer | Moon | Aries |
| ♌︎ Leo | Sun | Taurus |
| ♍︎ Virgo | Mercury | Gemini |
| ♎︎ Libra | Venus | Cancer |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | Leo |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | Jupiter | Virgo |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | Saturn | Libra |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | Scorpio |
| ♓︎ Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Sagittarius |
The cusp sign can differ between the two systems. The ruler goes with it.
The IC and the 4th house cusp
At local midnight the Sun sits close to the IC: the degree of the zodiac at the lowest point of the chart, directly opposite the midheaven. In Placidus the 4th house starts exactly there, so the IC and the cusp are the same point and carry the same sign.
Whole Sign takes a full sign for the 4th, the fourth counting from the rising sign, while the IC lands wherever it lands, sometimes in the 3rd and sometimes in the 5th. In our New York run the 4th gets a different sign in 44% of dates, depending on the system. A reader with Libra rising has Capricorn as the Whole Sign 4th, yet the IC may sit in Sagittarius. The 10th house page tells the same story from the top.
Whole Sign readers sometimes note the IC sign beside the house sign, as a second description of roots. Both belong in a reading of the foundation. The tool shows the two answers.
Which parent is the 4th house?
In Lilly's scheme the 4th goes to "fathers in general", and the 10th to mothers. Many modern astrologers reverse it and read the 4th as the mother or the nurturing parent, the one who made the house a home, and the 10th as the parent who taught the ways of the world. Some readers drop the question of gender and read the 4th as whichever parent raised you.
No chart can say who your parents are or how they treated you. The cusp sign, its ruler and whoever stands inside paint a style of home, and you decide which person in your life that matches. For the end of life, Lilly's list includes "the determination or end of anything", which is tradition's word for how a matter closes, and it makes no claim about anyone's future.
The 4th house in traditional astrology
Angular houses are the strongest group in the traditional ranking, and the 4th is one of the four, so a planet here counts even though it sits out of sight. Lilly calls it the North Angle. Hellenistic astrologers named it the anti-midheaven, and the Latin imum coeli, the bottom of the sky, gave us the abbreviation IC. Natural rulership, a scheme from the early 1900s, gives the house to Cancer and the Moon, which suits shelter and memory.
Lilly's own cosignificators for the 4th are Cancer and the Sun, a choice that surprises readers who expect the Moon alone.

Questions about the 4th house
Which parts of life does the 4th house cover?
Home, family, roots and the place you come from. Lilly's list adds lands, houses, inheritances and gardens, and later astrologers read it as the emotional base a person grows from. It begins at the IC, the lowest point of the chart.
What planet rules the 4th house?
Find the sign on the cusp, then its ruler: Cancer belongs to the Moon and Leo to the Sun, Gemini and Virgo to Mercury, Taurus and Libra to Venus, Aries and Scorpio to Mars, Sagittarius and Pisces to Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius to Saturn. Pluto replaces Mars on Scorpio in modern practice, Uranus replaces Saturn on Aquarius and Neptune replaces Jupiter on Pisces. In the natural scheme the house itself belongs to Cancer and the Moon.
Which planets suit the 4th house best?
The Moon, at home in its natural house, and the Sun, which Lilly names as a cosignificator, are the usual picks. Venus and Jupiter, the two benefics, also suit a house about comfort and shelter. Any planet can do well here if its sign and aspects help.
Is any planet unwelcome in the 4th house?
Tradition names Mars and Saturn the malefics, and readings of them here lean toward friction or a strict home. Both are themes and carry no forecast. A well-placed Saturn is described as a lasting, carefully built home.
Is the 4th house a good house?
It is angular, which puts it in the strongest group of houses in the traditional ranking, so planets there act with force. Angular means strong; whether the matters are pleasant is a separate question.
Which body parts does the 4th house cover?
Lilly names the breast and lungs, a correspondence from old texts. It belongs to the history of astrology, not to a checkup.
Does the 4th house show the end of life?
Lilly's list for the 4th includes "the determination or end of anything", and later writers have taken that to cover the end of life as well. It is tradition's wording for how a matter closes, and a chart cannot tell you when or how anything will end.
Does Chiron matter in the 4th house?
In modern astrology Chiron marks an old ache that becomes a way of helping others, and in the 4th that points to home, family and the feeling of belonging. A person might carry a sore memory of where they grew up and turn it into skill at making others feel welcome. Lilly and the older writers knew nothing of it; it was first seen in 1977.

Midnight in the data: the 4th house in our charts
The 4th has more than one door in our data. The two systems put different signs on it in 44% of the New York births we counted, more than almost any other house, and they split the planets on 53%. The table puts New York beside Anchorage.
The Sun reaches the IC around midnight: if the New York clock read 10:10 p.m. to 12:35 a.m. at birth, you most likely have the Sun in the 4th. Miami leaves the 4th empty on 46% of dates and Anchorage on 48%, and an entire sign is trapped inside the house on 8% of Placidus dates in New York and 17% in Anchorage.
