An Aries Sun is a decision you make about yourself; an Aries ascendant is a reflex other people see. Before anyone learns what you want, they watch you want it. The first impression is fast and a little loud: the hand goes up before the question ends and the plan starts before the meeting is over.
Picture a stalled project and a team that nobody wants to lead. The Aries ascendant says "let's just start," opens the document and hands out the first task, usually taking it. By Friday half the work is done. The tradition adds the bill: two colleagues who wanted a say are annoyed, one detail was skipped, and the person who moved fastest is bored by the slow middle.
Two labels sum it up, cardinal and fire. Cardinal signs open the seasons and are read as starters; fire is read as heat, appetite and a short fuse. In the old scheme of the body each sign governs a region, and Aries governs the head and face. Mars stands for heat and force, and fire is the sign's element. For the old view, go to the English astrologer William Lilly, who printed Christian Astrology in 1647. His entry for Aries reads: "A dry Body, not exceeding in height, lean or spare, but lusty Bones, and the party in his Limmes strong; the Visage long; black Eye-browes, a long Neck, thick Shoulders, the Complexion dusky brown or swartish." The spelling is as printed.
Set the two sources side by side and the reasoning shows. Lilly pictures a spare body and a long face; modern guides picture an athletic frame and a mobile one. Both start from a sign that rules the head and a planet that stands for force.
None of it is a prediction about your face. Parents, age and the whole chart shape a real one, and a single sign cannot account for them. If anything fits, it is probably the posture: the forward lean and quick movement people remember.
The Aries rising woman and the Aries rising man
The tradition draws them a little differently, though the chart underneath is the same; the gap is in what people expect to see.
An Aries rising woman is described as direct, energetic and quick to take charge. Popular writing calls that bossy, a word seldom used for the same behavior in a man. In New York the Aries window lasts 1 hr 11 min, which is 5.0% of the day and a tie with Pisces for the lowest of the twelve. Because the window is that short, a birth time written down half an hour off can put you in the sign before or after it. Confirm the minute before you decide.
Latitude changes the picture. Miami gets 1 hr 29 min, Seattle 1 hr 1 min, and in Anchorage the stay shrinks to 25 min, only 1.7% of the day. The equator gives Aries 7.8%. South of it the order turns over: Sydney has Aries up for 9.9%, twice New York's share.

Aries belongs to spring in astrology, because the Sun enters it at the March equinox, and people carry that over to the rising sign by looking among spring birthdays. The sky does not work that way. Every date has an Aries window, since each of the twelve signs rises once in every 24 hours.
Season moves the hour. On New York clocks the window is a late-morning one in January and a dawn one from March into April. By May and June it has moved to the small hours, and in July it straddles midnight. Late summer puts it in the evening, autumn in the afternoon, and by December it has come back to around noon.
