The tradition builds this ascendant from three parts. Leo is fire, which it reads as warmth and appetite. Leo is fixed, which means loyal and slow to change course. And the Sun rules it, the part of you that wants to be seen. Put them together and the usual portrait is generous, confident and a little stubborn.

Leo rising appearance
A Leo Sun and a Leo ascendant are often pictured alike, with the lion supplying thick hair, a straight back and a steady gaze. The looks, though, belong to the ascendant. The old textbooks are less poetic than the lion.
Here is how the sign appears in Lilly's 1647 Christian Astrology, printed in London: "Great round Head, big Eyes starting or staring out, or goggle-eyes, quick-sighted, a full and large body and is more then of middle stature, broad Shoulders, narrow Sides, yellow or dark flaxen hair and it much curling or turning up, a fierce countenance, but ruddy, high sanguine complexion, strong valiant and active."
Sort it into parts. Head, eyes and shoulders are physical items. Fierce, valiant and active describe a bearing more than a face. Curling hair is the one detail the lion and the book share.
This is folklore: a face owes more to family and age than to any sign. Lilly never mentions a mane or a regal air; those came from the lion.
Leo rising woman and man
A Leo rising woman is described as warm, expressive and at ease taking up space. Her strength is presence: she makes the introductions, remembers the name of your dog and gets the table laughing. The Sun as chart ruler of Leo rising
