Taurus rising traits
In a New York day Taurus gets 6.0%, well under Leo or Scorpio, yet astrologers describe the ascendant with one word more than any other: unhurried.
Take a made-up Saturday. Someone with a Taurus ascendant is asked to pick a restaurant for six. There is no vote. They recall that the place with the good bread also has parking, say so, and the matter is closed. At the table they order what they ordered last time and enjoy it more than the person trying something new. Nothing dramatic happens, and that is the picture the tradition draws: preference over theory, and a decision made once and kept.
The strengths named for this ascendant are patience, reliability and a good eye for what lasts, whether in a fabric or in a plan. These are the people who still turn up after the excitement is gone. The cost is the same trait seen from the other side. Once a Taurus ascendant has settled, changing course feels like losing something, and "let me think about it" can mean no for months. Taurus is a fixed earth sign: fixed signs are read as steadfast, earth signs as practical and tied to the senses.
All of this describes the manner people meet first. The Sun and Moon are expected to bend it, so read the rising sign as the front door of the chart.
Taurus rising appearance
The tradition builds the look of a sign from its symbol and its element. Taurus is the Bull and a fixed earth sign, so the old descriptions reach for weight, strength and a settled frame instead of speed or sharpness.
Lilly, in Christian Astrology, printed in London in 1647, describes the sign this way: "It presents one of a short, but of a full, strong and wel set stature, a broad Forehead, great Eyes, big Face; large, strong Shoulders; great mouth, and thick Lips; grosse Hands; black rugged Hair." Nearly every item on the list is large. It reads like the animal, not like Venus, the planet of beauty that rules the sign.
That is the logic as the old astrologers handled it: an earth sign makes the body solid, a fixed sign keeps it that way. Venus enters through the ruler. Astrologers check where it sits, and whether any planet stands near the ascendant, before they say anything about a real face.
Folklore, then, and many Taurus ascendants look nothing like it. If you want a light test, skip the build, which comes mostly from your family, and notice how you stand when you wait. Planted and in no hurry is what the old description is really pointing at.
Taurus rising woman and man
Does a Taurus rising woman come across differently from a man? The tradition says the manner is shared and the stereotypes differ. The one pinned on her is stubborn and expensive. The reading underneath is quieter: she is composed, at ease in her body and choosy about what gets into her life, from fabrics to friends. She is hard to anger and harder to win back. Taste shows in small things, such as a good coat or a home that feels right.
For a Taurus rising man the caricature is lazy and immovable. The tradition describes someone steady who builds slowly and dislikes being hurried, and who shows care by doing things rather than announcing them. People sometimes mistake his calm for agreement. The warning is the same for both: opinions that dig in and get defended long after the argument is over.
Both portraits come from one sky. A New York birth inside the 1 hr 26 min window gets this ascendant, and the Sun and Moon then decide how much of it shows.
Taurus rising in love: the partner it points to
Opposite your ascendant is the descendant, where the 7th house of partnership begins. For Taurus rising it is Scorpio, without exception. Readers of charts take that point for the traits you want in a mate, or end up facing again and again: intensity, privacy, depth, and a loyalty shown and never announced. Scorpio is a fixed water sign, so the partner it describes holds on as hard as you do.
Picture a first date, invented for the example. The Taurus ascendant arrives early, picks the table and orders slowly. Across from them is someone who says little, watches a lot and asks one question that goes straight to the point. Astrologers expect a pull toward that kind of person: calm on the outside, hard to read, serious about commitment. The friction is just as easy to guess. Two fixed signs facing each other dig in, and neither one gives way first.
The tradition adds that this ascendant courts the way it does everything else, at its own speed, with food, time spent together and steady attention in place of grand gestures. Venus is next on the reading list for romantic taste, and the Moon for what makes you feel secure.
Sun-sign pairs with Taurus: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
The descendant describes a pattern, and it says nothing about who you will end up with. Compatibility between two people is a question for two full charts. The Sun-sign pairs listed above are a place to start.
Example: July 15, 1990, 1:15 a.m., New York
Yes: you are a ♉︎ Taurus rising, 14°28′.
Your ascendant is in Taurus. That is 39 min from the nearest sign change, so a few minutes of rounding will not move it.
On that date in New York City, Taurus was rising from 12:36 a.m. to 2:02 a.m. Anyone born there in that window is a Taurus rising.

Taurus rising with each Sun sign
Your Sun is the identity you grow into, and with a Taurus ascendant each of the twelve Sun signs puts it in a different Whole Sign house, which shifts where the energy goes. Each entry gives the house and the clock hours when Taurus climbed over the New York horizon in that season. Houses are symbols, so read these as tradition, not as fact.
♈︎ Aries Sun
Aries stands one step behind Taurus on the wheel, so the Sun lands in the 12th house, the tradition's home for things done out of sight. A fast starter behind a slow face: friends see the calm and miss the push underneath.
Sun in your Whole Sign 12th house. In New York around April 4, Taurus rises 7:15 a.m. to 8:41 a.m. Aries zodiac sign
♉︎ Taurus Sun
Double Taurus, with the Sun in your 1st house because it shares the ascendant's sign. Births like this cluster near sunrise in late April and May. Nothing in the big three softens the first impression, and the tradition pictures someone loyal, sensual and very hard to move.
Sun in your Whole Sign 1st house. In New York around May 5, Taurus rises 5:13 a.m. to 6:39 a.m. Taurus zodiac sign
♊︎ Gemini Sun
Gemini wants to ask, Taurus wants to decide. With the Sun in the 2nd house, ruling earnings and belongings, the quick mind turns to how to make money and keep it. Astrologers picture someone who talks easily and spends carefully.
Sun in your Whole Sign 2nd house. In New York around June 5, Taurus rises 3:11 a.m. to 4:37 a.m. Gemini zodiac sign
♋︎ Cancer Sun
Cancer's Sun is in the 3rd house, which handles siblings, neighbors and daily chatter, so the protective streak comes out as small kindnesses. It is a soft-hearted Sun under a composed front, and the usual portrait is the quiet one who remembers what you said last month.
Sun in your Whole Sign 3rd house. In New York around July 7, Taurus rises 1:05 a.m. to 2:31 a.m. Cancer zodiac sign
♌︎ Leo Sun
Two fixed signs, and the 4th, the house of home and family, holds the Sun. Leo wants an audience, Taurus wants a comfortable couch, and the pair tend to be generous hosts with strong opinions about dinner. Pride and stubbornness are the warning.
Sun in your Whole Sign 4th house. In New York around August 7, Taurus rises midnight to 12:29 a.m. and 10:59 p.m. to midnight. Leo zodiac sign
♍︎ Virgo Sun
Earth on earth. Pleasure and creative projects fill the 5th house, where the Sun lands, and a careful, practical mind aims it at making things by hand. Guides call this a combination that gets the details right and takes its time getting them done.
Sun in your Whole Sign 5th house. In New York around September 7, Taurus rises 8:58 p.m. to 10:24 p.m. Virgo zodiac sign
♎︎ Libra Sun
Venus rules both signs, so Sun and ascendant answer to the same planet. The Sun is in the 6th house of daily work and health. The picture is graceful and a little lazy, with a real eye for how things should look.
Sun in your Whole Sign 6th house. In New York around October 8, Taurus rises 6:56 p.m. to 8:22 p.m. Libra zodiac sign
♏︎ Scorpio Sun
Scorpio is the opposite sign, which sets the Sun in the 7th house, the one for partners. Born in the late afternoon, this person looks easygoing and turns out to be intense once someone gets close. Both signs are fixed, so grudges and loyalty both last.
Sun in your Whole Sign 7th house. In New York around November 7, Taurus rises 3:58 p.m. to 5:24 p.m. Scorpio zodiac sign
♐︎ Sagittarius Sun
Sagittarius is restless and Taurus stays put, so the Sun in the 8th house, the house of shared resources, sets travel and appetite against security. The mix is often funny and frank. Astrologers say it wants adventure without giving up the good mattress.
Sun in your Whole Sign 8th house. In New York around December 7, Taurus rises 2:00 p.m. to 3:26 p.m. Sagittarius zodiac sign
♑︎ Capricorn Sun
Both are earth signs and both are patient. The 9th house of belief, study and long trips takes the Sun and sends that patience toward a bigger goal. It is a slow builder with big plans, the type that finishes degrees and mortgages.
Sun in your Whole Sign 9th house. In New York around January 6, Taurus rises 12:05 p.m. to 1:31 p.m. Capricorn zodiac sign
♒︎ Aquarius Sun
Aquarius is a fixed air sign, another fixed pairing, and the Sun reaches the 10th house, the career angle of the chart. The mix is an unusual mind in a steady package, and a reputation for being reliable and a little odd.
Sun in your Whole Sign 10th house. In New York around February 5, Taurus rises 10:07 a.m. to 11:33 a.m. Aquarius zodiac sign
♓︎ Pisces Sun
Pisces is dreamy, Taurus practical. Friends and groups belong to the 11th house, where this Sun sits, and the pairing is a gentle idealist with a loyal circle and a firm grip on the budget.
Sun in your Whole Sign 11th house. In New York around March 5, Taurus rises 8:13 a.m. to 9:39 a.m. Pisces zodiac sign
Your Moon sign beside a Taurus ascendant
The Sun is what you aim at. The Moon is what you do when you are not aiming, how you react and what settles you. For a Taurus ascendant the tradition gives each Moon sign a single line. Find yours and see whether it sounds like you.
| Moon sign | With this ascendant, in the tradition |
|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries Moon | quick to react, slow to show it; the calm front hides a short fuse that goes off and clears fast |
| ♉︎ Taurus Moon | Moon in the rising sign itself: comfort-loving, steady and deeply attached to routine, with a real stubborn streak |
| ♊︎ Gemini Moon | talks things through to settle down; curious in private and steadier outside than anyone expects |
| ♋︎ Cancer Moon | strong need for home and for being needed; feels deeply and shows it only to a few |
| ♌︎ Leo Moon | wants to be appreciated and will not ask; warm, proud and loyal to those it chooses |
| ♍︎ Virgo Moon | calms down by fixing and organizing; worries in the background and rarely says so |
| ♎︎ Libra Moon | needs harmony and good company; unhappy in a tense room, so it works to keep the peace |
| ♏︎ Scorpio Moon | Moon on the descendant side: intense feeling, long memory, and a need for a partner who can be trusted |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius Moon | needs room to roam and a joke to lighten the mood; restless behind a settled manner |
| ♑︎ Capricorn Moon | emotionally self-reliant and measured; feels safest with a plan and a track record |
| ♒︎ Aquarius Moon | detached when upset and needs space to think; loyal in a way that looks cool from outside |
| ♓︎ Pisces Moon | absorbs the moods around it and needs quiet afterward; soft inside a practical front |
Venus rules Taurus rising: where it sits in the chart
Every sign answers to a planet, and the one behind your rising sign gets the title of chart ruler. For Taurus that planet is Venus. Modern astrology never added a second ruler, as it did with Pluto for Scorpio, so Venus carries the whole job. Astrologers locate Venus and read its sign and house as the use made of the Taurus manner. In Whole Sign houses Taurus takes the first slot, Gemini the second, Cancer the third, and Aries closes the circle at twelve.
With Taurus rising Venus can land in any of the twelve signs. Its sign shares in our count match the all-dates shares for Venus, so this ascendant does not steer Venus toward any sign. What the ascendant changes is the house. Venus in Gemini is the house of money for Taurus rising and the house of partners for Sagittarius rising.
Where Venus falls with this ascendant, by Whole Sign house. We took every third date from 1930 to 2025 and one moment every 12 minutes of New York clock time, and kept the 83,989 moments with Taurus on the horizon.
| House | 12th | 7th | 2nd | 5th | 10th | 4th | 9th | 3rd | 1st | 8th | 11th | 6th |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ♀ Venus | 9.8% | 9.6% | 9.3% | 8.9% | 8.7% | 8.4% | 8.3% | 8.2% | 7.3% | 7.2% | 7.2% | 7.1% |
Venus by sign in the same count: Aries 9.8%, Scorpio 9.6%, Gemini 9.3%, Virgo 8.9%, Aquarius 8.7%, Leo 8.4%, Capricorn 8.3%, Cancer 8.2%, Taurus 7.3%, Sagittarius 7.2%, Pisces 7.2%, Libra 7.1%.
The spread by house is nearly flat. The most common spot is the 12th house (9.8%) and the least common is the 6th house (7.1%). The lead is thin, so no single placement defines a Taurus ascendant. The most common sign for Venus is Aries (9.8%).
Taurus rising and the career point: the midheaven
The midheaven (MC) is the chart's peak, the spot the tradition uses for career and public standing. Born at the same instant as the ascendant, it follows it, and with Taurus rising it can only be Capricorn or Aquarius. In New York, Capricorn is the MC for 66.5% of the Taurus window and Aquarius for 33.5%.
Latitude tips the balance. Miami leans to Aquarius at 60.9%, Anchorage is Capricorn for 100.0%, and the table below fills in the cities between. Both signs are ruled by Saturn in the traditional scheme, so a Taurus ascendant always carries a Saturn-ruled career point. Astrologers read that as work that rewards patience and a long record.
| City | Midheaven sign that comes with it |
|---|---|
| Miami (26° N) | Aquarius 60.9%, Capricorn 39.1% |
| Los Angeles (34° N) | Capricorn 51.9%, Aquarius 48.1% |
| New York (41° N) | Capricorn 66.5%, Aquarius 33.5% |
| Seattle (48° N) | Capricorn 89.9%, Aquarius 10.1% |
| Anchorage (61° N) | Capricorn 100.0% |
By Whole Sign count Capricorn falls in your 9th house and Aquarius in your 10th, so the MC sign and the 10th house do not always match. Each has its own page: Capricorn midheaven and Aquarius midheaven.
How common is Taurus rising?
Picture two cousins born on the same afternoon in New York, one at 1 p.m. and one at 9 p.m. Their ascendants will differ, because the horizon turns through all twelve signs in a day. Taurus gets 6.0% of that day in New York, about 1 hr 26 min at a stretch. That puts it ninth of the twelve, level with Aquarius, with only Aries and Pisces below.
Taurus is a quick-rising sign in the Northern Hemisphere, and the effect grows with latitude. At the equator it holds 8.3% of the day. In Miami the window is 1 hr 41 min. Far north in Anchorage the window shrinks to 39 min, only 2.7% of the day.
| Latitude | Share of the day | Time on the horizon |
|---|---|---|
| 0° N Equator (Quito, Singapore) | 8.3% | — |
| 25.8° N Miami | 7.0% | 1 hr 41 min |
| 34.1° N Los Angeles | 6.5% | 1 hr 33 min |
| 40.7° N New York | 6.0% | 1 hr 26 min |
| 47.6° N Seattle | 5.3% | 1 hr 16 min |
| 55° N Edinburgh, Moscow | 4.2% | — |
| 61.2° N Anchorage | 2.7% | 39 min |
| 33.9° S Sydney | 10.1% | — |
Cross into the Southern Hemisphere and the order reverses: Sydney gives Taurus 10.1% of the day. These figures count clock time. Babies do not arrive at an even rate hour by hour, so a slice of the day is not a slice of the population.
When is Taurus rising? The hours, month by month
1 hr 26 min is all Taurus gets in a New York day, so the question is which hour, not which date. The window slides because the Sun creeps along the zodiac about a degree a day while the Earth spins, which drags every sign's rise roughly 120 minutes earlier with each new month. Taurus comes up around dawn in May, in the small hours in July, in the early evening in October and in late morning in January.
The table lists New York clock times for mid-month dates. Travel east or west and the window slides with longitude, four minutes for each degree, and the test above handles your own birthday and place. One marker: on May 15 the New York window opens at 4:34 a.m.

Questions about Taurus rising
What does Taurus rising mean?
It means Taurus was the sign coming up on the eastern horizon as you were born. The ascendant describes your outward manner, and for Taurus the tradition says calm, deliberate, practical and attached to comfort. Only a birth time and place can confirm it.
Is Taurus rising rare?
It is on the less common side. In New York Taurus holds 6.0% of the day, roughly 1 in 17 moments, tied with Aquarius and ahead of only Aries and Pisces. Near the equator it is more common, at 8.3%.
What are Taurus rising traits?
Patience, loyalty, a taste for quality and a resistance to being rushed. The tradition also names stubbornness, a dislike of change and a habit of holding on after something has stopped working. The Sun and Moon change how strongly each shows.
What does a Taurus rising woman look like?
Old sources, including William Lilly in 1647, give the sign a short, full and strong frame, broad shoulders and a big face. Modern guides soften that to a calm, sensual presence. It is folklore, and a real woman's looks come from her family far more than from her ascendant.
Who is a Taurus rising man attracted to?
The descendant is Scorpio, so the tradition says someone intense, loyal and private. For attraction, look at Venus and Mars in your chart before the ascendant.
What is the rising sign for Taurus?
A Taurus Sun sign has no fixed rising sign. Every sign can rise on a Taurus birthday, depending on the hour. Taurus rising, on the other hand, is a particular window of the day: in mid-May in New York, about 4:30 to 6 a.m.
Who is Taurus rising compatible with?
Astrologers compare whole charts, not ascendants alone. The descendant is Scorpio, so the tradition looks first at Scorpio-flavored partners, and at the Sun and Moon signs of both people. Our compatibility pages cover each Sun-sign pair.
What is the chart ruler of Taurus rising?
Venus, the planet of attraction and values. Its sign and Whole Sign house come first when astrologers read a Taurus ascendant. Run the test above with your birth time to see where it sits.
