Popular lists picture Gemini as youthful, slim and quick-handed, and pass that picture to Gemini rising unchanged. A 17th-century English textbook says something different. In Christian Astrology (London, 1647), William Lilly describes the sign this way: "An upright, tall, straight Body: either in Man or Woman the Complexion sanguine, not cleer, but obscure and dark, long Arms, but many times the Hands and Feet short and very fleshy; a dark Hair, almost Black; a strong, active Body, a good piercing hazel Eye, and wanton, and of perfect sight, of excellent understanding, and judicious in worldly affairs."
Height, dark coloring, long arms, a piercing eye: those are his terms, and youth is not among them. He ends on the mind, with understanding and sound judgment, which suits a sign that belongs to Mercury and to talk. Lilly's school judged a face from several things at once: the sign, the planet that rules it, and any planet standing near the rising degree.
All of this is folklore. Plenty of Gemini ascendants look nothing like the passage, and inheritance and age shape a face more than any sign can. What still fits is movement: hands that talk, an expression that shifts as you listen.
Gemini rising woman and man

Mercury: the one ruler of a Gemini rising chart

The same minute of birth gives a second point, the midheaven, or MC: the spot highest in the sky, which astrologers use for reputation and the work you are known for.
