The Lovers upright meaning
Upright, the card is about two things that sit together: a bond and a decision. In a reading it often shows a relationship where the attraction is mutual and nobody is pretending. Just as often it shows a fork in the road, where the question is which option is actually yours.
A. E. Waite, who designed the deck most people use, listed the card as attraction, love, beauty and trials overcome. The idea of choice came from older pictures of the card, which Waite called "man between vice and virtue"; he replaced them with Adam and Eve. Readers kept the choice anyway, and most sites now put "choice" and "values" next to love.
Is it a good card? In most spreads, yes. It is one of the few Major Arcana cards readers treat as plainly warm. It does ask something of you: a decision made with your eyes open.
The Lovers reversed
Reversed, The Lovers usually means the two halves have come apart. In a relationship that can be a cooling, a quarrel about the future, or one person investing more than the other. Outside love, it is a choice you made for comfort or under pressure and now regret.
Waite gave the reversed card short, hard words: failure and foolish designs, plus "marriage frustrated" from an older account. Modern readers soften this to disharmony and misalignment, and many add self-love: before you sort out the other person, you sort out what you want.
Read a reversed Lovers with its neighbors, since it does not mean a breakup by itself. Next to the Three of Swords it gets heavy; next to the Two of Cups it reads more like a rough patch two people still want to fix.
Is The Lovers a yes or no card?
| Position | Answer |
|---|---|
| Upright | Yes |
| Reversed | Not like this, or no |
Upright, The Lovers is a yes. Every site we checked for this page counts it that way, especially for questions about a person or a partnership.
Reversed, it is a "not like this" more than a flat no. If you asked whether a relationship will work, the card says the two of you do not want the same thing yet. If you asked whether to take an offer, it says the offer clashes with something you care about.
Neither Waite nor the Golden Dawn papers give a yes or no rule for any card. That method is a modern habit, so treat the answer as the card's mood.
The Lovers in love
In a relationship
For a couple, upright Lovers is the card of being chosen and choosing back. It points to honest talk, shared plans and attraction that is still there. If something is undecided, like moving in or getting engaged, the card leans toward saying it out loud.
If you are single
For a single reader, the card describes the kind of bond you are open to. It can also show a choice between two people, or between a person and your current life. Tarot does not say when someone arrives, and we will not pretend it does.
As feelings: how do they feel about you?
As feelings, upright Lovers means attraction and respect at once: they like you and they take you seriously. Reversed, it shows mixed feelings, wanting you but holding back, or caring more about how the relationship looks than what it is.
Is The Lovers a soulmate card?
Many readers call it one. Waite called it "the card of human love", and the picture is the first couple in the garden. Still, the card describes a bond between two equals who keep choosing each other, with fate doing none of the work.

The Lovers as work and money
At work, The Lovers often shows a partnership: a co-founder, a good manager, a client who fits. It can also mean a career choice where one path pays and the other matches who you are. The card favors the one you can explain to yourself in a year.
Reversed in a career reading, it points to a partner who is not pulling the same way, or a job that conflicts with your values. In money questions it marks a decision between two things you cannot both have.
The Lovers as advice and as a person
As advice, The Lovers says: decide, and decide as yourself. Write down what you value before you weigh the options; the right choice is usually obvious once the list exists.
As a person, the card describes someone warm and direct, often a partner or close friend. In the Golden Dawn system the card belongs to Gemini, so readers who use astrology may read the person as quick, talkative and curious.
Symbolism of the Rider–Waite–Smith card
- The angel. A winged figure in a purple robe blesses the couple from the clouds. Waite only calls it "a great winged figure"; later readers name it Raphael, the angel linked with air.
- The sun. A large sun stands at the top, "in the zenith" in Waite's words, right above the angel.
- The man and the woman. Two nude figures, Adam and Eve in the first garden. The man looks at the woman; she looks up at the angel.
- Tree of Life. Behind the man, a tree with twelve flames. Waite calls them twelve fruits; many readers count them as the twelve signs.
- Tree of Knowledge. Behind the woman, a fruit tree with a snake wound around it: temptation, and the choice that comes with it.
- The mountain. A single peak rises between them. Waite does not explain it; readers usually see aspiration or the meeting point of two lives.
What the oldest sources say
“Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome. Reversed: Failure, foolish designs. Another account speaks of marriage frustrated and contrarieties of all kinds.”
“Inspiration (passive, mediumistic), motive power, action.”
The card means love today mostly because of Waite. Book T, the manuscript of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (the order both Waite and Pamela Colman Smith belonged to), set the card's astrology and describes it differently: inspiration, motive power, action. Love is not in its sentence at all.
Its title for the card is "The Children of the Voice; the Oracles of the Mighty Gods". Put together with "inspiration (passive, mediumistic)", the older reading is about listening: a voice you receive and act on. When a reader today says The Lovers is about following your values, that is close to the Golden Dawn idea in modern words.

In the Golden Dawn system The Lovers belongs to Gemini, the twins. Gemini is an air sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of speech, and the card's Hebrew letter is Zain. Older decks showed three people; Waite's deck shows two, which makes the pair, and the twins, easier to see.
The same papers give Gemini three minor cards, one for each ten degrees of the sign: the Eight, Nine and Ten of Swords. So the warmest trump and three of the bleakest Swords share a sign. Gemini is air, and air in tarot is thought, so the same mind that talks two people into love can talk itself into fear.

Questions about The Lovers
What number is The Lovers in tarot?
Six. It is card VI of the Major Arcana, after The Hierophant (V) and before The Chariot (VII).
Is The Lovers card positive?
Upright, yes: it is one of the friendliest cards in the deck. It still comes with a task, because it asks you to make a choice from your values. Reversed, it is a warning about a rift or a choice made for the wrong reasons.
Does reversed matter in a yes or no reading?
If you read reversals, yes. Upright Lovers is a yes; reversed reads as "not like this" or no. Many readers skip reversals in yes or no draws. Neither Waite nor the Golden Dawn papers set a yes or no rule.
What does The Lovers mean as advice?
Make the choice yourself and make it from what you value. Say what you want out loud, to yourself first and then to the other person.
What does a Lovers tattoo mean?
Most people who get one mean a bond with a partner, or a promise to choose by their own values. Tarot tattoos often copy Pamela Colman Smith's drawing for the 1909 deck, which is in the public domain.
What are the worst cards to pull in a love reading?
Readers most often name the Three of Swords, The Tower and the Ten of Swords. None of them is a final answer: tarot describes a situation, it does not predict the future.
Is tarot connected to astrology?
Through the Golden Dawn, yes. Its Book T gave each Major Arcana card a sign, planet or element, and each numbered minor card a ten-degree decan. The Lovers got Gemini. Older decks and many readers today use tarot without astrology.
