Air Signs: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

Air signs are Gemini (May 21 to June 20), Libra (September 23 to October 22) and Aquarius (January 20 to February 18), the zodiac signs of the air element, which astrology links with thought, speech and connection between people. Gemini is mutable and ends spring. Libra is cardinal and begins autumn at the September equinox. Aquarius is fixed and sits in the depth of winter.

Is Aquarius an air sign?
Yes, even though its name means water-bearer. Aquarius, Gemini and Libra make three air signs, not four. Common mix-ups →
Are air signs unemotional?
Not in the tradition. Air handles a feeling by talking or thinking it through first, which can look detached from outside. Air at its best and worst →

Hot and wet: the air element in the old scheme

Each classical element was a mix of two qualities, and air was hot and wet. In his Latin poem the Astronomica, written in Rome early in the first century AD, Manilius puts Gemini, Libra and Aquarius in air. Modern astrologers read hot as outgoing and quick, wet as the wish to connect and mix. Air shares heat with fire and wetness with water, and is the exact opposite of earth.

Gemini is sign three, Libra sign seven, Aquarius sign eleven. Four steps separate each from the next, 120° on the wheel, so any two air signs form a trine. The element sits third in the repeating order fire, earth, air, water, which is why each air sign follows an earth sign and comes just before a water one.

How we worked this out
  1. The moment. No birth time, so we check the whole of January 15, 1982 in Eastern time, from midnight to midnight.
  2. Each planet's longitude. Its position along the zodiac, 0° to 360° from the March equinox point. The Moon was at 10°30′ Libra at midday.
  3. Sign, then element. Every 30° is one sign, and the signs run fire, earth, air, water in turn: Aries fire, Taurus earth, Gemini air, Cancer water, then Leo fire again. The air signs are Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.
  4. The count. We add up the ten planets from the Sun to Pluto. Astrologers weigh the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars most, so they get their own count; Jupiter to Pluto stay in a sign for a year or more and are shared by everyone born around the same time.

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius side by side

Libra holds the cardinal place. Its season opens at the September equinox, when day and night are about equal, and the sign of the scales takes balance as its theme. Venus rules it. Libra air is social: it thinks in terms of the other person, weighs both sides, and wants fairness and good manners in a room.

Aquarius is fixed and falls in the coldest weeks of the northern year. Saturn is its traditional ruler and Uranus its modern one. This is air at its most principled and its least moveable. Aquarius cares about groups, ideas and the future, defends an opinion for years and keeps a cool distance in one-to-one closeness.

Gemini, the mutable air sign, carries spring into the June solstice. Mercury rules it. Gemini air is quick and curious and gets restless easily: two conversations at once, a new subject every week, a sharp sense of humor. It learns fast. It gets bored just as fast.

Detached or just thinking? Air sign strengths and flaws

Astrology calls air the mind of the zodiac. Air signs are said to be curious and articulate and to see a problem from several angles at once. Air is the element of friendship as much as romance, and air signs are often the ones who keep a group of friends in touch and introduce people who ought to meet.

An air sign wants to name an emotion, discuss it or understand where it came from before it settles, and a partner who wanted a hug can read that as distance. That is where the cold reputation comes from. The other common charges: overthinking, saying one thing and doing another, and dropping a plan once it stops being interesting. Gemini is accused of inconsistency, Libra of indecision and people-pleasing, Aquarius of stubbornness and of caring more about humanity than about the person in front of it.

Air signs in relationships

For an air sign, attraction starts in conversation. Wit, a quick reply and a mind that surprises them count for more than looks or grand gestures, and many air signs say they fall for someone halfway through a long talk. Flirting is simply how they socialize. Partners sometimes take it more seriously than it is meant.

In a relationship air needs space to think and see other people without being questioned about it. Libra wants partnership itself, with shared decisions and a pleasant home. Gemini wants variety and someone who never gets dull. Aquarius wants a partner who is also a friend and does not try to change its opinions. What ends things with air is jealousy, heavy silences and a partner who wants every feeling acted on at once.

Air with fire, water and earth: the match table

Inside the element every combination is a trine, Gemini with Libra, Libra with Aquarius and Aquarius with Gemini alike, and two air signs rarely run out of things to say. Same-sign pairs get on quickly too. Astrologers warn that an all-air couple can talk about a problem for months without anyone doing anything about it.

Fire is air's natural ally on the wheel. Two of the fire signs sit at a sextile from any air sign. The third is straight across. For Gemini those are Aries and Leo, with Sagittarius opposite; Libra gets Leo and Sagittarius and faces Aries; Aquarius gets Sagittarius and Aries and faces Leo. In the old image air feeds fire, and fire gives air's ideas some heat and momentum.

Earth and water signs are either adjacent to an air sign, square to it or a quincunx away. None of those counts as easy. Water can find air glib, and air finds water's moods hard to argue with. Earth wants to know what happens next, which air may not have decided. Couples across these elements can do well, and compatibility guides say they need more patience and translation than air with air or with fire.

Moon, Venus, Mars or rising in air

You can be a Taurus or a Scorpio and still have a lot of air. A Moon in air calms down by talking things through. Venus in air falls for a mind and needs a partner who is also good company. Mars in air argues well and prefers words to force. If those placements are in Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, astrologers would see air in that part of your life whatever the Sun sign.

A Gemini, Libra or Aquarius ascendant tends to make a person seem chatty, friendly and easy to meet. Add an air Sun or Moon to an air ascendant and astrologers speak of an air-heavy chart.

Little or no air is read as a mind that trusts experience over theory, and that may need other people to put feelings into words.

Without a birth time the ascendant stays unknown; with one, the rising sign calculator finds it, and our guide to Sun, Moon and rising together shows how the three combine.

The element most often missing: air in 35,064 charts

We counted air in one chart per day from 1930 to 2025, cast for New York, 35,064 charts in total. Air is the element most often absent altogether: on 7.6% of days no planet at all, Sun through Pluto, is in Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, compared with 6.5% for earth, 4.8% for fire and 4.1% for water.

The outer planets explain the gap. Over these 96 years Uranus, Neptune and Pluto spent 63 planet-years in air signs, the lowest total of the four elements (earth 85, fire 72, water 69). Pluto reached its first air sign, Libra, only in 1971, so no one born in our range before then has Pluto in air.

Generations still differ a lot. A chart from the 1930s carries 1.74 air planets on average, the low point of the whole run. The 2000s reach 3.15, with Neptune in Aquarius through the whole decade and Uranus there until 2003, and the 1940s come close at 3.13, the years of Uranus in Gemini and Neptune in Libra.

Among the five personal planets, a single air placement is the typical result (36% of days) and none at all happens on 27%. An air Sun standing alone, with the other four elsewhere, is a bit more common for Libra (22.1% of Libra days) than for Gemini (21.3%) or Aquarius (20.0%).

A share here is a share of dates with one chart apiece, which is different from a share of people. Pluto moved into Aquarius in 2023 and our count stops on December 31, 2025; Uranus touched Gemini briefly in 2025, too briefly for the list. Planet-years total the days Uranus, Neptune and Pluto spent in air, checked once a day at 12:00 UT with the astronomy-engine ephemeris (tropical). Our other counts: research and data.

Air sign FAQ

What zodiac signs are air signs?

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Gemini begins around May 21, Libra near the September equinox and Aquarius around January 20. Each start date can move a day, depending on when the Sun crosses into the sign that year.

Are there four air signs?

No, three. Every element has exactly three signs, one cardinal, one fixed and one mutable. Aquarius is the one people most often doubt, because of its water-bearer name, but it is air along with Gemini and Libra.

What months are the air signs?

Late May and most of June for Gemini, late September and most of October for Libra, and late January and most of February for Aquarius. Spring, autumn and winter each get one air sign; summer gets none.

Which planets rule the air signs?

Mercury rules Gemini and Venus rules Libra. Aquarius has Saturn as its traditional ruler and Uranus as its modern one. Dorotheus of Sidon assigned the air triplicity its own set: Saturn when the chart is diurnal, Mercury when it is nocturnal, Jupiter as the cooperating ruler.

Is Sagittarius an air sign?

No, Sagittarius is a fire sign, with Aries and Leo. Its opposite sign, Gemini, is air. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are earth, and Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are water.

What two signs do not go together with air?

There is no rule that bans a pairing, but the angles compatibility charts rate hardest for air are the squares: Gemini with Virgo and Pisces, Libra with Cancer and Capricorn, Aquarius with Taurus and Scorpio. Those couples are said to clash over pace and feelings.

Do air and water signs get along?

They can, with effort. No water sign forms a trine or sextile with any air sign; the links are all neighbors, squares and quincunxes. Air wants to discuss a feeling and water wants it felt, and the couple works once both accept the other way.

What if my chart has no air?

Then you are in the largest of the four "missing element" groups: 7.6% of our 1930–2025 dates have no planet in an air sign. The ascendant is left out of that figure, since working it out takes a birth time and place, so you may still have air rising.
