Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn: three speeds of one element
Capricorn is the cardinal earth sign. The Sun reaches it at the December solstice, when the nights in the Northern Hemisphere are longest, and astrology treats every cardinal sign as an initiator. Its ruler is Saturn. That is the planet of time and structure. Capricorn earth goes into plans with a long horizon: a career, a reputation, a company that will outlast this year.
Taurus is the fixed one, sitting in the middle of spring when nothing about the season is in doubt. Venus rules it. The tradition gives Taurus the most physical version of earth: food, comfort, touch, money in the bank, a home that stays put. It is the slowest of the three to change course. It is also the hardest to push.
Virgo is mutable, with its weeks running out at the September equinox. Mercury rules it, as it rules Gemini. In Virgo the element turns to detail and method: fixing, sorting, improving, noticing the one thing that is off. Of the three it adapts most easily, which surprises people who know only the tidy-desk cliché.
Earth sign characteristics: grounded, stubborn, jealous?
Grounded is the word every guide uses, and in practice astrologers mean three habits. Earth signs trust what they can see and test. They finish things. And they show care through practical help, so a fixed shelf or a paid bill says more than a long speech. People tend to call them reliable, calm in a crisis and good with money.
The complaints are as consistent. Earth can be rigid and slow to accept a new idea, and it may mistake caution for being right. Jealousy is pinned mostly on Taurus, as possessiveness over people and things it thinks of as its own. Virgo turns critical, first of itself and then of everyone nearby. Capricorn can put work ahead of the people it says the work is for, and comes across as cold until you know it well. Earth signs also forgive a broken promise slowly. They would have kept it.
What are earth signs attracted to?
Consistency first. An earth sign falls for a person who turns up when they said they would, has some kind of plan for their life and treats money and time as real. Charm without follow-through rarely holds their interest past a second date. Physical presence also matters to them, especially to Taurus: a voice, a smell, good food shared slowly.
They court slowly. Then they commit for real. Love from an earth sign looks like a fixed car, a remembered allergy, a budget drawn up for two. Capricorn wants a partner it can respect in public. Virgo wants to be useful and to have that noticed. Taurus wants loyalty and a little indulgence. What drives them away is unreliability, drama for its own sake and anyone who mocks their caution as boring.
Earth sign compatibility: why water comes first
Two earth signs share pace and priorities. Every pairing inside the element is a trine, and couples of the same earth sign understand each other's routines without negotiation. The weakness compatibility guides point to is a relationship that turns into a well-run household with very little surprise in it.
Water is the element earth is usually paired with next, and the wheel explains why. Count around it from any earth sign and two of the water signs land 60° away, the sextile, while the third faces it from 180°. Taurus: Cancer and Pisces at a sextile, Scorpio opposite. For Virgo the sextiles are Cancer and Scorpio, with Pisces facing it. Capricorn pairs easily with Scorpio and Pisces and looks across at Cancer. Water gives earth a reason to soften. Earth, in turn, gives water solid ground.
Fire and air signs fall next door to an earth sign, at a right angle to it, or 150° away, which astrologers call the semi-sextile, square and quincunx. None of those is one of the comfortable angles. Earth finds fire hasty and air hard to pin down, while fire finds earth slow and air finds it heavy. These couples work when both sides decide to learn the other's tempo, which astrologers describe as hard work.

Read down a column to see one earth sign against all twelve Sun signs, sorted earth first, then water, fire and air. Each cell names the aspect between the pair and whether astrologers count it as easy, adjusting or friction; "neighbors" are adjacent signs. Where a cell is linked, that couple has a full page. Whole charts can be compared in the compatibility calculator.
An earthy chart without an earth Sun
Plenty of Geminis, Leos and Pisces have the Moon in Taurus or Mars in Capricorn, and astrologers would call those parts of them earthy. A Moon in earth needs routine and physical comfort to feel safe. Venus in earth is loyal and shows love by looking after someone. Mars in earth works steadily toward a goal and rarely gives up halfway.
The ascendant counts as well. A Virgo or Capricorn rising usually makes the first impression more reserved than the Sun sign would suggest. When the Sun, Moon and ascendant include two earth placements, the whole chart gets labeled earth-heavy.
A chart short of earth is said to find structure through habits it has to build on purpose, or through people who supply it.
The rising sign depends on the hour of birth and is worked out in the rising sign calculator; for Sun, Moon and ascendant read together, see what your big three mean.
How often earth leads a birth chart
Our sample is one chart a day, cast for New York, on each of the 35,064 days between January 1930 and December 2025. Among the ten planets, earth holds more than any other element on 22.2% of those days. Fire leads on 16.9%, air on 17.5% and water on 15.9%, so none of the others reaches 18%.
The slow planets are behind it. Add up the time Uranus, Neptune and Pluto each stayed in earth signs and you get 85 planet-years, more than for any other element (fire 72, water 69, air 63). Pluto was in Virgo from 1956 to 1972 and in Capricorn from 2008 to 2024, and Neptune crossed Capricorn from 1984 to 1998. Everyone born in those stretches starts with one or two earth planets already in place.
Counting only the five personal planets, exactly one in earth is the usual case (37%), and 27% of days have none. About one earth Sun in five is the only earth among the five: that is true on 24.5% of Taurus days, 21.5% of Virgo days and 18.4% of Capricorn days.
By decade the spread is wide. The 1960s top the table at 3.41 earth planets per chart on average, and the 2000s sit at the bottom with 1.95. Astrologers read slow planets as a generation's weather, so these figures describe birth years more than personalities.

Percentages describe calendar days, a single chart for each, so they say nothing about how many people were born on them. Where a planet entered an earth sign before our range starts, the listing opens at 1930; Uranus had not left Taurus by the end of 2025 and is cut off there. For planet-years we checked Uranus, Neptune and Pluto at noon UT each day. Positions come from astronomy-engine in the tropical zodiac. Our other counts: research and data.
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn in more depth
Each earth sign has a page of its own covering love, work, birthdays by year and decans, and each earth couple has one too. Below are those links, plus the element earth most often pairs with.
In tarot, Book T gives earth to The World, together with Saturn; the numbered Pentacles of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are the minor arcana of the earth signs.
Earth signs: short answers
What are the three earth signs?
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Taurus starts around April 20, Virgo around August 23 and Capricorn around the winter solstice. The first day can shift by one either way, depending on the hour the Sun changes sign that year.
What months are earth signs?
Taurus covers late April and most of May, Virgo late August and most of September, and Capricorn the last days of December and most of January. There is one earth sign in spring, one at the end of summer and one at the start of winter; autumn has none.
What is the order of the earth signs?
Taurus comes first as the second sign of the zodiac, Virgo is the sixth and Capricorn the tenth. By modality the order is different: Capricorn leads as cardinal, Taurus holds as fixed, Virgo adapts as mutable.
Which planets rule the earth signs?
Venus rules Taurus, Mercury rules Virgo and Saturn rules Capricorn, in both traditional and modern astrology. The older triplicity scheme of Dorotheus of Sidon adds three rulers for the element as a whole: Venus by day, the Moon by night, and Mars as participating ruler.
Is Scorpio, Gemini or Libra an earth sign?
No. Gemini and Libra are air signs, along with Aquarius. Scorpio, which sits opposite Taurus, is water like Pisces. Leo and Sagittarius are fire. Earth is only Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
Are two earth signs a good match?
Most compatibility charts say yes. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn sit 120° apart, and a couple with the same earth Sun usually agrees on money and time. Couples like this tend to argue less and to get stuck in routine more.
Do earth and fire signs get along?
It takes work. On the wheel every fire sign is a neighbor, a square or a quincunx to every earth sign, none of the soft aspects. Fire wants speed and risk, earth wants proof and a plan, and each can teach the other something if neither tries to win.
What does it mean to have no earth in your chart?
It means the Sun, Moon and all eight other planets fell outside Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Across our 1930–2025 dates that is 6.5% of days. Rising signs are not in the count, because they depend on the minute and place of birth, so an earth ascendant is still possible.
