What the midheaven is in astrology
Draw a line across the sky from due north, straight overhead, to due south: that is your meridian. The degree of the zodiac crossing it at your birth is the midheaven. MC stands for medium coeli, Latin for "middle of the sky". With the ascendant, the descendant and the IC it is one of the four angles of a chart, and astrologers treat the angles as its strongest points.
Where the ascendant describes how you come across in person, the midheaven describes how you are seen from a distance: the role people know you for, your career direction and your standing. Some astrologers widen it to the mark you want to leave, which is why "life purpose" turns up on many MC pages. In the tradition the MC sign colors that public side; its ruler and any planets near it say more about how you get there.
The MC is a point on the zodiac, not the zenith straight overhead. From New York the MC sits anywhere from about 17° to 64° below the zenith, depending on which sign is there. North of the tropics it is always due south of you; in Australia or South Africa it is due north.
How we calculate your midheaven
The midheaven needs fewer ingredients than the rising sign. We turn your local time into Universal Time with the time zone rules for your city, find the sidereal time at Greenwich, add your longitude to get the RAMC (the right ascension of your meridian), and project that onto the zodiac. Latitude never enters the formula. The calculator prints every step for your own input.
The time matters more than the place. The meridian turns 15° an hour, so ten minutes of error moves the MC by about 2.5°, while 50 miles of error in the birthplace moves it by about one degree. For births before about 1970 the time zone is worth a second look: many US states and towns changed their daylight saving rules, and we take them from the IANA time zone database, which records those changes city by city.
We checked the result on five birth charts from Astro-Databank with a recorded birth time (Obama, Jobs, Monroe, Madonna, Einstein) against astrotheme.com and a second chart site, eleven comparisons in all. The largest difference was 0.018°, about one minute of arc.
Which house is the midheaven in?
It depends on the house system. In Placidus, the default on astro.com, astro-seek and most apps, and in Koch, Porphyry and the other quadrant systems, the midheaven is the cusp of the 10th house by definition, so the 10th house sign and the MC sign are the same. Whole Sign houses count from the rising sign instead, one sign per house, and the MC can land in the 9th, 10th or 11th. Equal houses count 30° from the ascendant degree, and the MC falls in the 9th or 10th, or in the north also the 8th or 11th.
The farther from the equator, the more often the MC leaves the 10th. We counted it for every date from 1930 to 2025:
| MC in the Whole Sign… | Miami 26° N | Los Angeles 34° N | New York 41° N | Seattle 48° N | Anchorage 61° N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8th house | — | — | — | 0.1% | 13.9% |
| 9th house | 12.2% | 17.1% | 21.9% | 27.9% | 21.9% |
| 10th house | 75.7% | 65.8% | 56.2% | 43.9% | 28.3% |
| 11th house | 12.2% | 17.1% | 21.9% | 27.9% | 21.9% |
| 12th house | — | — | — | 0.1% | 13.9% |
So if one app says your MC is in Scorpio and another puts your 10th house in Sagittarius, both can be right. Either way, read the MC sign for your public direction. The house changes only which part of the chart it is read through.
Midheaven and rising sign
The ascendant sits on the eastern horizon and the midheaven on the meridian, so they are usually about three signs apart, with the MC earlier in the zodiac. In New York a Leo rising has a Taurus or Aries MC, a Scorpio rising a Leo or Virgo MC. The gap is not a fixed 90°: in New York it ran from 65° to 115° over the years we counted, and in Anchorage from 35° to 145°.
| Rising sign | Midheaven in New York |
|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Capricorn 100.0% |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Capricorn 66.5%, Aquarius 33.5% |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Aquarius 79.1%, Pisces 20.9% |
| ♋︎ Cancer | Pisces 61.4%, Aries 38.6% |
| ♌︎ Leo | Taurus 63.0%, Aries 37.0% |
| ♍︎ Virgo | Gemini 84.8%, Taurus 15.2% |
| ♎︎ Libra | Cancer 84.8%, Leo 15.2% |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | Leo 63.0%, Virgo 37.0% |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | Libra 61.4%, Virgo 38.6% |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | Scorpio 79.1%, Libra 20.9% |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | Sagittarius 66.5%, Scorpio 33.5% |
| ♓︎ Pisces | Sagittarius 100.0% |
Aries rising in New York always has a Capricorn MC, and Pisces rising a Sagittarius one. Every other rising sign there splits between two MC signs, so your rising sign alone narrows the MC to two candidates at most.
The IC, opposite your midheaven
The imum coeli, "bottom of the sky", is the point exactly opposite the MC: the same degree in the opposite sign. A Scorpio MC at 4° means a Taurus IC at 4°. In quadrant houses it starts the 4th house. Astrologers read the MC and IC as one axis: the IC is where you come from and what you go home to, the MC is where you are heading in public. The calculator gives both.
The ruler of your midheaven
Every sign has a ruling planet, and the ruler of your MC sign is read as the planet that steers your career. Its sign tells you how, and its house tells you which part of life your public work draws on. In the example above the MC is Libra, ruled by Venus, and Venus sits in the 1st house: astrologers would read a career built on the person's own presence and taste.
| MC sign | Ruler | IC |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Mars | Libra |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Venus | Scorpio |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Mercury | Sagittarius |
| ♋︎ Cancer | Moon | Capricorn |
| ♌︎ Leo | Sun | Aquarius |
| ♍︎ Virgo | Mercury | Pisces |
| ♎︎ Libra | Venus | Aries |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | Taurus |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | Jupiter | Gemini |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | Saturn | Cancer |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | Leo |
| ♓︎ Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Virgo |
The 12 midheaven signs in short
What the tradition reads in each MC sign as a public role. These are directions, not job titles.
| Midheaven | How it tends to show in public |
|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | known for starting things; wants work where it can move first and answer to few people |
| ♉︎ Taurus | known for reliability; builds a reputation slowly on something solid, often with money, food, land or craft |
| ♊︎ Gemini | known for words and contacts; may run two careers at once or change track more than once |
| ♋︎ Cancer | known for looking after people; often works close to family, home or the public as a whole |
| ♌︎ Leo | known by name; wants credit and a visible role, and leads more easily than it follows |
| ♍︎ Virgo | known for getting details right; trusted with the work others find tedious |
| ♎︎ Libra | known for tact and taste; good at the parts of work that involve other people agreeing |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | known for depth and discretion; drawn to work with secrets, crises, research or other people's money |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | known for ideas and range; teaching, travel, publishing or anything that widens the map |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | known for responsibility; climbs by stages and is often given authority young |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | known for doing it differently; groups, causes, technology, a role it helps invent |
| ♓︎ Pisces | known for imagination or care; art, healing or service, and a public image that can be hard to pin down |
How common each midheaven sign is
Unlike the rising sign, the midheaven sign is almost equally likely everywhere: it depends on sidereal time, not on latitude. The signs near the solstices hold the MC longer, the ones near the equinoxes a little less.
| MC sign | Share of the day | Time on the MC |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | 7.8% | 1 hr 51 min |
| ♉︎ Taurus | 8.3% | 1 hr 59 min |
| ♊︎ Gemini | 8.9% | 2 hr 8 min |
| ♋︎ Cancer | 8.9% | 2 hr 8 min |
| ♌︎ Leo | 8.3% | 1 hr 59 min |
| ♍︎ Virgo | 7.8% | 1 hr 51 min |
| ♎︎ Libra | 7.8% | 1 hr 51 min |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | 8.3% | 1 hr 59 min |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | 8.9% | 2 hr 8 min |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | 8.9% | 2 hr 8 min |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | 8.3% | 1 hr 59 min |
| ♓︎ Pisces | 7.8% | 1 hr 51 min |
The shares are the same in all five cities we counted, from Miami to Anchorage. Births are not spread perfectly evenly over the day, so this is a share of clock time, not of people. Time matters as much as for the rising sign: for 25% of all moments the MC changes sign within 15 minutes before or after, and for 50% within half an hour. The bar in the calculator shows how close your time is to a change.
Questions about the midheaven
What is my midheaven sign?
It is the zodiac sign that was crossing the meridian, the north-south line through the sky above you, at the minute you were born. You need your birth date, exact time and city. Enter them in the calculator above and it gives your midheaven to the degree, with the IC and the ruler of the sign.
Which house is the midheaven in?
In Placidus, Koch and the other quadrant systems most chart sites use, the midheaven is the cusp of the 10th house by definition. In Whole Sign houses it can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th, and at high latitudes even the 8th or 12th. In Equal houses it falls in the 9th or 10th, and in the far north also the 8th or 11th. The calculator shows yours in all three systems.
Is the midheaven always in the 10th house?
No. It is always the start of the 10th house in Placidus, but not in Whole Sign or Equal houses. In our count for New York, the midheaven fell in the Whole Sign 10th house only 56.2% of the time; in Anchorage, 28.3%.
Is my midheaven the same as my rising sign?
No. The rising sign is the point on the eastern horizon; the midheaven is the point on the meridian, roughly a quarter of the zodiac earlier. They are about three signs apart, so a Leo rising usually has a Taurus or Aries midheaven, never a Leo one.
What midheaven do Leo risings have?
In New York, a Leo rising comes with a Taurus midheaven 63.0% of the time and an Aries midheaven 37.0%. Farther north the range widens: in Anchorage Leo rising can also have a Pisces MC. Closer to the equator Taurus becomes more likely.
What is the opposite of the midheaven?
The IC, short for imum coeli, "the bottom of the sky". It is exactly opposite the midheaven, in the opposite sign at the same degree, and it starts the 4th house in Placidus. Astrologers read it for home, family and private life, the base the public life stands on.
Can I find my midheaven without a birth time?
No. The midheaven moves through all 12 signs in a day, about one sign every two hours. Without a time the calculator shows which sign was on the midheaven in each part of your birthday, so a rough time such as "early morning" can narrow it to one or two signs.
Why does a Vedic calculator give a different midheaven?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is now about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used here. So your sidereal MC is often one sign earlier: the example above, Libra 7°11′, is about Virgo 13° with the Lahiri setting most Vedic software uses.
