Your Sun sign: who you are trying to be
The Sun sign is the one in the newspaper column, set by your birthday alone. Astrologers read it as your will: what you build your sense of self around and what gives you energy when things go well. It is the part of you that you show on purpose. Because the Sun stays in one sign for about a month, millions of people share yours, which is why a Sun sign description alone often feels too general.
Your Moon sign: what you need
The Moon moves through a sign in two to three days, so your Moon sign separates you from most people born in the same month. Astrologers read it as your emotional habits: what makes you feel safe, how you react before you have time to think, and what home means to you. People who live with you see your Moon more than your Sun.
Your rising sign: how you come across
The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It changes about every two hours, so it separates you even from people born on the same day. Astrologers read it as your manner: the impression you make in the first five minutes, your style, the way you start things. It also sets the houses of the whole chart.
The 12 signs as Sun, Moon and rising
Each sign reads differently as a Sun, a Moon and a rising sign, as the tradition describes it. Find your own three rows.

How to read your big three together
Start with what the three share. Each sign belongs to an element: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) or water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). When all three are in one element, astrologers expect a person who seems the same in public and in private. That is uncommon: about 6 charts in 100. Most often two of the three share an element and the third stands apart (about 56 in 100), and in about 37 in 100 all three are in different elements. Then astrologers expect the manner, the drive and the needs to pull in different directions, and the reading is about how those parts get along.
Take the example in the tool below, a birth on July 15, 1990, at 7:30 a.m. in New York: Cancer Sun, Aries Moon, Leo rising. The rising sign shows first, so a stranger meets a Leo manner: warm and easy to notice. The Cancer Sun, a water sign, is more careful and protective than that first impression suggests, and people who get close see it. The Aries Moon, a fire sign like the rising, reacts fast and gets over things fast. Two fire placements and one water placement is the most common kind of mix, two signs in one element and one apart; here the cautious water part is the Sun, which shows once people know you.
Two habits of astrologers help with any combination. They treat the rising sign as the lens the other two are seen through. And when the Moon and Sun disagree, they look for the Moon in private life and the Sun in public life.
For a real chart read this way, see our celebrity birth charts: each lists the Sun, Moon and rising sign from a birth time on record.
Enter your birth date, time and city. You get your three signs and how often that exact combination came up in our count for the nearest of five US cities. The example is the July 15, 1990 birth from the section above: in New York it ranks 27 of 1,728 (77 in 100,000).
Cancer Sun, Aries Moon, Leo rising comes up in 77 of every 100,000 moments in our New York count, about 1 in 1,299. That ranks it 27 of the 1,728 possible big threes there, in the most common tenth. Your Moon and rising sign share the fire element and the third sign stands apart, the most common pattern (about 56 charts in 100).
Counts come from the nearest of five US cities (Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Anchorage): every date from 1930 to 2025, 12 moments a day. They are shares of clock time, not of people. For your full chart with planets and houses use the birth chart calculator.
Our numbers: how often each big three comes up
We counted every date from 1930 to 2025, twelve moments a day spread evenly over local clock time, in five US cities from Miami to Anchorage: 420,768 moments per city. For each moment we recorded the Sun, Moon and rising sign. Nobody else we found publishes these counts.
| Big three | Miami 26° N | Los Angeles 34° N | New York 41° N | Seattle 48° N | Anchorage 61° N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All three in one sign | 0.69% | 0.68% | 0.68% | 0.68% | 0.69% |
| All three in one element | 6.3% | 6.3% | 6.2% | 6.3% | 6.3% |
| Three different elements | 37.5% | 37.5% | 37.5% | 37.5% | 37.5% |
| At least two in the same sign | 23.5% | 23.5% | 23.5% | 23.5% | 23.5% |
| Most common combination vs rarest | 1.8× | 2.2× | 2.5× | 3.3× | 10.4× |
First, a "triple" big three is about 1 moment in 147 everywhere, but which triple depends on latitude: in New York triple Leo came up 75 times per 100,000 moments and triple Aries only 31. Second, shares of the elements barely change from city to city, because the Sun and Moon do not care where you were born. Third, the gap between the most common and the rarest combination grows the farther north you go: 1.8 times in Miami, 10.4 times in Anchorage. The rising sign causes the gap. In Anchorage, Pisces and Aries cross the horizon in about 25 minutes, while Leo and Scorpio take over three hours; in Miami the same signs take about an hour and a half and two and a quarter hours.
The most common combinations in New York were Cancer Sun, Virgo Moon, Virgo rising and Cancer Sun, Pisces Moon, Scorpio rising; the rarest Aquarius Sun, Aquarius Moon, Pisces rising. None of the 1,728 combinations was missing in any city.
Shares of clock time, not of people: births are not spread perfectly evenly over the day. Our other counts: research and data.
If you don't know your birth time
The Sun sign is safe. The Moon sign is safe on most days: in our New York count the Moon changed sign during the local day on 44% of dates, and on those dates you have two candidates. The rising sign is the one you cannot get, since all twelve rise on every birthday. The rising sign calculator lists the hours each one was rising on your date, which helps if you know roughly whether you were born at night or in the morning. The long-form US birth certificate usually records the time.
Questions about the big three
What does it mean when your Sun, Moon and rising are all the same sign?
It means the three main placements of your chart speak with one voice, and astrologers read such a person as a concentrated version of that sign: "triple Leo", "triple Scorpio". It is rare. In our count of five US cities a triple big three came up in about 0.68% of moments, roughly 1 in 147. Triple Leo was the most common of the twelve in New York and triple Aries the rarest.
Which of the big three matters most?
Astrologers disagree, and the answer they give depends on the question. The Sun is usually read as identity and purpose, the Moon as private needs, the rising sign as manner and first impressions. For how you come across to a stranger the rising sign shows first; for what you are like at home, the Moon; for what you are trying to become, the Sun.
What is the rarest big three?
There are 1,728 possible combinations, and in our count none is impossible: every one showed up in every city. The rarest ones pair a fast-rising sign (Aries or Pisces in the Northern Hemisphere) with a Sun and Moon that are both uncommon on the horizon. In New York the rarest was Aquarius Sun, Aquarius Moon, Pisces rising, in Anchorage Aquarius Sun, Leo Moon, Aries rising. The rising sign decides most of it, so the answer changes with latitude.
What is the luckiest rising sign?
No rising sign is luckier than another in astrology. Some traditions link Jupiter with luck, so a Sagittarius or Pisces rising, both ruled by Jupiter in traditional astrology, is sometimes called lucky in popular articles. That is a reading of symbols and cannot be measured.
Can I know my big three without a birth time?
You can know two of the three. The Sun sign needs only the date. The Moon sign needs only the date on most birthdays, but the Moon changes sign every two to three days, and on the day it does you need the time. The rising sign always needs the time, because it changes about every two hours. The tool above tells you which of these applies to your date.
What is the big six in astrology?
Some apps and articles extend the big three to six: Sun, Moon and rising plus Mercury, Venus and Mars. The extra three are read as how you think, how you love and how you act. Our birth chart calculator gives all of them, with links to pages on each sign.
Is big three compatibility a real thing?
Astrologers who compare two charts look at more than Sun signs, and the Moon and rising signs of both people are a common next step: a Moon in the partner's Sun sign is a classic sign of rapport in the tradition. Our compatibility pages work from Sun signs; for two full charts you need a synastry reading.
