What your Moon sign means
Your Sun sign describes who you are on purpose: the identity you build and show. The Moon describes what happens underneath, what you need in order to feel at home, the mood you wake up in, and the part of you that answers before you have decided how to answer. A Taurus Moon calms down with routine and good food; a Gemini Moon calms down by talking it through. In the tradition the Moon also stands for the mother, the home you grew up in and the body's daily rhythms.
That is why people who feel their Sun sign description is off often recognize themselves in their Moon sign. A Leo Sun with a Capricorn Moon can be warm in public and guarded at home, where the Capricorn need for control takes over.
| Placement | What astrologers read in it | What you need to find it |
|---|---|---|
| ☉ Sun sign | identity and will, the self you aim for | birth date (and the time on the day the Sun changes sign) |
| ☽ Moon sign | emotional needs, comfort, instinctive reactions | birth date and city; on 44% of birthdays also the time |
| ↑ Rising sign | manner and first impression | exact birth time and place (rising sign calculator) |

Do you need your birth time for your Moon sign?
Sometimes. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so it crosses into a new sign every two and a half days. If that crossing did not happen on your birthday, every minute of the day has the same Moon sign and the date is enough. If it did, the sign depends on whether you were born before or after the crossing.
We counted every date from 1930 to 2025 in five US cities. The Moon changed sign on 43.9% of them, 15,401 days out of 35,064; because the Moon's motion does not depend on place, the share is the same from Miami to Anchorage. On a typical change day the split is about 75 to 25: the smaller of the two signs covered a median of 25% of the day.
The common shortcut, using noon when the time is unknown, gets the Moon sign wrong for 11.0% of all births in our New York count: everyone born on the other side of a change. That is why the calculator never picks a sign for you on a change day. It shows both, with the minute of the change in your birth city's time, and a rough time ("in the afternoon", "late evening") is usually enough to choose.
How we calculate your Moon sign
We convert your local birth time to Universal Time with the time zone rules of your city for that year, including daylight saving time. Then we take the Moon's position along the ecliptic from the astronomy-engine ephemeris, in the tropical zodiac. Each sign is a 30° slice of the circle starting at 0° Aries, so the position gives both the sign and the degree. The calculator prints every step for your own input under the result.
We checked the result on five birth charts from Astro-Databank with recorded birth times (Obama, Jobs, Monroe, Madonna, Einstein) against astro-seek.com and astrotheme.com, ten comparisons in all. The largest difference in the Moon's position was 0.016°, about one minute of arc. We also checked seven sign changes against the astro-seek lunar calendar, from 1975 to 2026; our times were within one minute of theirs.
Your Moon phase at birth
The dates of upcoming full and new moons, with their signs, are in our full moon calendar for 2026 and 2027; tonight's phase and the phase on any date are on moon phase today.
The phase comes from the angle between the Moon and the Sun. At a new Moon they are in the same place; at a full Moon they are opposite. The calculator divides the cycle into the eight 45° phases of the lunation cycle that astrologers use, and also gives the share of the disc that was lit. Some astrologers read the birth phase as a temperament: New Moon people start things on instinct, Full Moon people see both sides, and Balsamic people finish and let go.
| Phase | Moon minus Sun | Share of moments, 1930–2025 |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon | 0° to 45° | 12.4% |
| Crescent | 45° to 90° | 12.7% |
| First Quarter | 90° to 135° | 12.6% |
| Gibbous | 135° to 180° | 12.3% |
| Full Moon | 180° to 225° | 12.3% |
| Disseminating | 225° to 270° | 12.6% |
| Last Quarter | 270° to 315° | 12.6% |
| Balsamic | 315° to 360° | 12.4% |
The shares are close to one in eight each. The small gaps come from the Moon running slightly faster around new and full Moon than around the quarters, an effect astronomers call the variation.
Which house your Moon is in
The house needs the exact time and place, because the houses turn with the Earth once a day. Astrologers read the Moon's house as the part of life where you look for comfort: the 4th is home and family, the 10th is work and reputation, the 7th close partners. The calculator shows the Moon's house in Placidus, the default on most chart sites, and lets you switch to Whole Sign or Equal houses.
Those systems often disagree. In our count the Moon's Placidus house differed from its Whole Sign house at 54% of moments in New York, and the farther north, the more often:
| City | Miami 26° N | Los Angeles 34° N | New York 41° N | Seattle 48° N | Anchorage 61° N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Placidus ≠ Whole Sign | 51% | 52% | 54% | 56% | 65% |
So if two apps put your Moon in neighboring houses, both can be right. Our houses page explains the systems.

Questions about Moon signs
What is my Moon sign?
It is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. Enter your birth date and city in the calculator above. If the Moon stayed in one sign all day, that is your answer even without a time. If it changed sign that day, the calculator shows both signs and the minute of the change, and your birth time decides which one is yours.
Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?
Often, yes. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so on 56.1% of dates since 1930 it stayed in one sign from midnight to midnight in New York, and the date alone is enough. On the other 43.9% you need the time, or at least a rough idea of it: the calculator gives the hour of the change, so "born in the evening" can settle it.
Is my zodiac sign my Moon sign?
No. When people say "my sign" they mean the Sun sign, the sign the Sun was in on your birthday. The Moon sign is a separate placement that can be any of the 12 signs. The two match only about one time in twelve, mostly for people born near a new Moon.
Why do different websites give me different Moon signs?
Almost always because of the time. Many calculators use noon when you leave the time out, and give one sign without telling you the Moon changed sign that day. In our count for New York, guessing noon puts the wrong Moon sign on 11.0% of all births. Time zone mistakes for older dates cause the same error on a smaller scale. A sidereal (Vedic) calculator uses a different system: see below.
What is the luckiest Moon sign?
Astrology names no luckiest sign. The tradition does rank where the Moon works most easily: it rules Cancer and is exalted in Taurus, so those two count as its strongest signs. Capricorn (detriment) and Scorpio (fall) are where it works least easily. That describes how comfortably feelings flow. It says nothing about whether a person is happier or worse off.
Why does a Vedic calculator give a different Moon sign?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is now about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used here and on most Western sites. A Moon in the first 24° of a tropical sign lands in the previous sign in the sidereal one; only a Moon in the last few degrees keeps its sign. The Leo 28°15′ Moon of our example is one of those: about Leo 5° with the Lahiri setting most Vedic software uses. Both answers are correct in their own system.
How long does the Moon stay in one sign?
About two and a half days. Over 1930–2025 we measured 15,400 stays: the shortest was 1 day 23 hours, the longest 2 days 13 hours, and the average 2 days 7 hours. The Moon is faster near the Earth and slower far from it, which is why the stays differ.
What are my big 3?
Your Sun, Moon and rising sign. This page gives the first two. The rising sign needs an exact birth time and place; our rising sign calculator gives all three together.
