What your Moon sign means
The Moon is the body astrologers use for feelings, comfort and instinct. Your Sun sign is the self you show on purpose and grow into; your Moon is the self that shows up when you are tired, hurt or at home. People often recognize themselves more in their Moon when they think about family, stress and close relationships.
In the tradition the Moon rules Cancer, where it is at home, and it is exalted in Taurus, where feelings settle into calm and comfort. The Moon is in detriment in Capricorn, opposite Cancer, and in fall in Scorpio, opposite Taurus. The labels rate only how easily the Moon works in a sign. A Capricorn or Scorpio Moon can still be a warm one.
Your Sun, Moon and rising sign are known together as the "big three". The rising sign needs an exact birth time and place; our rising sign calculator gives all three.

Why your Moon sign may need your birth time
The Moon is the fastest body in the chart. It covers about 13° a day and goes around the whole zodiac in 27.31 days, so it changes sign every two to three days. In our count of 15,400 stays from 1930 to 2025, the shortest lasted 47 hours and the longest 61 hours.
That speed is why so many birthdays are split. On 54.9% of birthdays the Moon changed sign at some point during the day in US time zones, so the date alone gives two possible signs. Sites that assume noon get it wrong: in our count for New York, guessing noon puts the wrong sign on 11% of birth dates.
If you do not know your time, the calculator above still tells you whether your birthday was one of the split days and at what hour the Moon moved on. A rough idea of the time, like "early morning", is often enough to choose.
Your Moon phase at birth
The phase is the angle between the Moon and the Sun. Astrologers split it into eight phases of 45° each, a scheme Dane Rudhyar set out in The Lunation Cycle: New Moon, Crescent, First Quarter, Gibbous, Full Moon, Disseminating, Last Quarter and Balsamic.
Each phase covers between 12.34% and 12.66% of birth dates in our count. A New Moon birth means the Moon was in or near your Sun sign; a Full Moon birth puts it near the opposite sign. In the tradition the waxing half is read as building and the waning half as sharing or finishing. The calculator gives your phase and how much of the Moon was lit.
Is any Moon sign rare?
No. From 1930 to 2025 the Moon went around the zodiac 1,284 times, entering every sign on each pass, so each sign holds between 8.3% and 8.36% of birth dates. The small differences come from where our date range happens to begin and end.
This is the opposite of Venus and Mars, where retrograde loops make some signs far more common. The Moon never turns retrograde, so none of its signs get a long stay. When a site says a sign is rare, it usually means rare among famous people or in a small sample, and our count of every date does not back that up.
Moon signs by element
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), 25% of birth dates: feelings show fast and burn off fast. Aries reacts at once, Leo needs warmth said out loud, and Sagittarius looks for the bright side or the next trip.
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), 25% of birth dates: you feel safest when life is steady and practical needs are met. Taurus wants comfort and routine, Virgo calms down once there is a plan, and Capricorn copes by taking responsibility.
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), 25% of birth dates: you understand a feeling by talking or thinking it through. Gemini needs conversation, Libra needs peace with the people close by, and Aquarius needs room and a step back.
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), 25% of birth dates: feelings run deep and you pick up other people's moods. Cancer, the Moon's own sign, needs home and close family, Scorpio needs trust, and Pisces needs gentle boundaries.
The Moon in the houses
To place the Moon in a house you need your birth time and city. Houses make one full turn each day, and the Moon itself moves fast. The house points to where you look for comfort in life and where your moods show. Our Moon sign calculator gives the house in three house systems.
- 1st house: moods show on your face; people read your feelings before you speak.
- 2nd house: you feel safe when there is money in the bank and familiar things around.
- 3rd house: feelings come out in talk, letters and texts, and with siblings.
- 4th house: home ground for the Moon in the tradition: home, family and roots matter most.
- 5th house: comfort in play, children, romance and creative work.
- 6th house: you settle your feelings with routines, useful work and care for your health.
- 7th house: you need a close partner to feel at home. Moon in the 7th house
- 8th house: feelings run deep and private; trust and intimacy come first.
- 9th house: comfort in travel, study and big ideas; homesick for faraway places.
- 10th house: feelings on show in public life; a career that looks after people.
- 11th house: friends and groups feel like family.
- 12th house: a hidden emotional life; you need time alone to recover.
Questions about Moon signs
How do I know my Moon sign?
Use the calculator on this page: enter your birth date, plus your birth time if you have it. If the Moon stayed in one sign all day, the date is enough. If not, you get both signs and the hour of the change. The Moon sign calculator also uses your birth city for the exact minute and the Moon's house.
What is the difference between a Sun sign and a Moon sign?
The Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on your birthday: the self you show and the person you are becoming. The Moon sign is where the Moon was: your emotional needs and first reactions. The two match on only 8.2% of birth dates.
Why do websites give me different Moon signs?
Almost always because of the time. On 54.9% of birthdays the Moon changed sign during the day in US time zones. Sites that assume noon, or ignore your time zone, can land on the other side of the change.
Is the Moon sign or the Sun sign more accurate?
Neither; they describe different things. The Sun sign describes your identity and the Moon your feelings. Many people find the Moon fits better when they think about home and close relationships.
What is the rarest Moon sign?
There is none. Every sign holds between 8.3% and 8.36% of birth dates between 1930 and 2025, because the Moon passes through all twelve signs every month.
What is the luckiest Moon sign?
Astrology names no luckiest sign for the Moon. The tradition ranks where the Moon works most easily: Cancer, its home, and Taurus, its exaltation. It works least easily in Capricorn and Scorpio.
Is the Moon a sign of love?
Not directly. In astrology Venus is the planet of love and attraction. The Moon describes what you need to feel emotionally safe, which counts for a lot in a long relationship. When astrologers compare two charts (synastry), they check how one partner's Moon sits with the other's Sun, Moon and Venus.
Does the Moon have a retrograde?
No. The Moon never turns retrograde, so unlike Venus or Mars no Moon sign gets an extra-long stay. That is why all twelve Moon signs are about equally common.
