What the 10th house means
It is the most public place in a chart, the part of a life that strangers see before they know the person. It begins at the midheaven, the point where the zodiac crossed the meridian above your birthplace, and it gathers what astrologers read as vocation, reputation and standing. In his 1647 Christian Astrology, William Lilly lists "honour, preferment, dignity, office, lawyers; the profession or trade any one useth" for it, along with kings and judges, the people with authority over everyone else, and also mothers.
Modern writers keep career and read it as a public role: what you are known for, or hope to be. Across the chart sits the 4th, home and roots at the bottom against public life at the top, and astrologers like to read the pair together.
Your 10th house sign
A business card gives a name, a title and a company, and the sign on the 10th cusp is read as the title other people hand you. In Whole Sign it is the 10th sign from your rising sign, so Aries rising has Capricorn here and Taurus rising has Aquarius. Placidus uses the midheaven sign, which is not always the same one (see the midheaven section below).
♈︎ Aries on the 10th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
Aries on the cusp gives a public face that starts things, takes the first call and does not wait for permission. Others notice the initiative first. Colleagues may find you direct, even abrupt. A name for starting projects fits the sign better than one for maintaining them, and it does not say which job that would be.
♉︎ Taurus on the 10th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
With Taurus here, public life is built slowly and kept: the same employer for years, one craft refined, a name people trust because it has not changed. Venus rules the sign, so quality, comfort and money handled sensibly tend to count in how you are seen.
♊︎ Gemini on the 10th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Ask three people what you do and you may get three answers. Gemini on the cusp suits a public life with several strands, such as writing and teaching, or a side project next to the main job. Reputation travels by what you say and publish. Versatility can look like restlessness on a résumé.
♋︎ Cancer on the 10th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
Work that looks after people or places is where Cancer on the cusp points: nursing, food, housing, a family business. Standing may rise and fall in phases, following the mood of the people around you. Colleagues may treat you as the one who remembers everyone's birthday.
♌︎ Leo on the 10th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
Leo on the cusp fits a public life with a front seat: a name on a door, a press photo, a role where others wait for your decision. Visibility comes easily, and so does the wish for credit. Loyalty and generosity are expected in return. The sign minds being unnoticed more than hard work.
♍︎ Virgo on the 10th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
Virgo on the cusp points to a reputation earned through careful, useful work, such as editing, analysis or repair, anywhere the details have to hold up. Precision is the signature. The sign is a perfectionist about its own output, and others may notice the corrections before the praise.
♎︎ Libra on the 10th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Where two sides disagree, Libra on the cusp is at home. Astrologers read it for law, diplomacy, design and mediation, jobs where tact and a sense of proportion are the product. Others may see you as the agreeable one, which helps in a meeting room and can hide how firmly you hold a position.
♏︎ Scorpio on the 10th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Colleagues sense depth first with Scorpio on the cusp, which suits work behind closed files: research, investigation, crisis work, anywhere people hand over what they would rather not say. Authority is held quietly. Older books give the sign to Mars; modern ones to Pluto.
♐︎ Sagittarius on the 10th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Publishing, teaching, law, religion and work abroad fit Sagittarius on the cusp, and far-off places turn up in the career story. Standing grows from being seen as honest, enthusiastic and well informed; tact is the weak point. A role with room to move holds the sign better than a fixed desk routine.
♑︎ Capricorn on the 10th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
Capricorn belongs to this house by modern custom, so the match is close: a public life built in steps, titles earned over years, responsibility accepted early. Ambition is this sign's plain reputation. Others may take you for older than you are. The risk is judging yourself only by rank.
♒︎ Aquarius on the 10th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
Aquarius on the cusp is read for group work, technology, science or reform, any field a little ahead of its time. Standing comes from being the independent voice in the room. Colleagues may find you friendly but hard to pin down.
♓︎ Pisces on the 10th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
Pisces on the cusp is read for art, film, music, charity or any work that deals in feeling and image, so imagination is the asset and vagueness the risk. A public role may be hard to define, and a career can wander through several fields before it settles. Boundaries with clients and bosses are the main lesson.
Planets in the 10th house
The sign on the cusp describes a style; a planet inside the house describes a presence, something others can point at. Each planet below has its own sign-by-sign page.
☉ Sun in the 10th
Recognition is the question when the Sun is here. Lilly counted the Sun very fortunate in this house, and modern astrologers describe a person whose identity is bound up with the public role: being known for something is part of feeling real. The risk is self-worth that rises and falls with the job title.
☽ Moon in the 10th
Moods go public with the Moon here. Reputation may shift in phases, and the public tends to respond to you emotionally, as caring, as changeable, as familiar. Astrologers tie the Moon to the public at large, so work with customers, crowds or families comes up often.

☿ Mercury in the 10th
Writing, teaching, selling and speaking are the traditional fits for Mercury in the 10th, and reputation grows through what you say, publish or sign. You may be known as quick and well informed. Holding several roles at once is a possible pattern.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♀ Venus in the 10th
Traditional astrologers count Venus a benefic and give it a pleasant public image, with careers in art, design, diplomacy or hospitality. Charm can work as a professional tool. The shadow side is liking approval too much, or dodging a hard talk with a boss to keep the mood easy.

♂ Mars in the 10th
In this house Mars has been tied to friction with authority, and a well-placed one is described as courage and leadership. Tradition lists Mars among the harmful planets, and the usual keywords are competitiveness, a fast pace and a willingness to fight for position. Impatience with slow bosses is the thing to watch.

♃ Jupiter in the 10th
Respected, helped by mentors, at ease with law, teaching or large institutions: that is the old, generous reading of Jupiter here. Modern astrologers keep the optimism and add the risk of overreach, taking on more than a calendar holds. Nothing in the placement ensures promotion or income.
♄ Saturn in the 10th
Modern custom pairs Capricorn, Saturn's sign, with the 10th, so authority is said to arrive late for Saturn here, after hard work, and the reputation is serious and durable. Traditional astrologers also note a heavy load of responsibility.
♅ Uranus in the 10th
Conventional paths rarely hold Uranus in the 10th for long. The placement is read for unusual careers, changes of field, freelance or technical work, and a public image that is independent or eccentric. Rules from above sit badly. A name for originality is easy to earn and hard to put on a form.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♆ Neptune in the 10th
A public image that others project onto, a pull toward art, film, spiritual or caring work, and a talent for sensing what an audience hopes for: that is the reading of Neptune here. The weak point is a job description that never quite settles, or an employer who is idealized and then disappoints.
By sign: Aries · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♇ Pluto in the 10th
Power and how it is handled are the topics with Pluto here. The placement is read for careers with weight, such as research, finance or politics, anywhere control and secrets sit close. Reputation may be rebuilt more than once, and astrologers describe a need for real authority rather than a title.

What an empty 10th house means
An empty 10th is read through the ruler of its cusp sign, with the sign itself setting the style. Close to half of our New York charts, 47%, show an empty 10th under Placidus, while one planet stands there in 33% and crowds of two or more are rarer. That ruling planet comes next.
Your 10th house ruler
Whichever planet governs your 10th cusp sign was somewhere in the sky at birth, in some house of your chart, and astrologers follow that thread to see where the public role is rooted. With Capricorn on the 10th, Saturn is the ruler; a Saturn in the 2nd house would tie your standing to earning and to what you build and own, slowly.
| 10th house sign | Ruler | Rising sign (Whole Sign) |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Mars | Cancer |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Venus | Leo |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Mercury | Virgo |
| ♋︎ Cancer | Moon | Libra |
| ♌︎ Leo | Sun | Scorpio |
| ♍︎ Virgo | Mercury | Sagittarius |
| ♎︎ Libra | Venus | Capricorn |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | Aquarius |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | Jupiter | Pisces |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | Saturn | Aries |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | Taurus |
| ♓︎ Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Gemini |
The ruler depends on the system here: when the midheaven sign differs from the Whole Sign 10th, the two systems name different rulers.
Midheaven and the 10th house cusp
In Placidus the midheaven and the 10th cusp are one point; in Whole Sign they often are not. The midheaven, written MC, is the degree of the zodiac that was crossing the meridian, due south and above the horizon, at the moment of birth. Placidus, the system most apps use, starts the 10th house exactly there, so the MC's sign and the cusp's sign match.
Whole Sign counts differently. The 10th house is the 10th sign from the rising sign, taken whole, and the MC is a point that can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th sign of that count. Among New York charts, 44% have an MC sign that is not the Whole Sign 10th sign. A chart with Virgo rising has Gemini as its Whole Sign 10th and can have the MC in Cancer.
Neither answer is a mistake. Some astrologers who use Whole Sign also note the MC sign as a separate point, so one chart carries two career signs: the sign of the house and the sign of the MC. Read each with the sign paragraphs above.
Career by the sign on the 10th
Two people can share a job title and an office, one known as the fast starter and the other as the careful finisher. The sign on the 10th cusp is read for that difference: the reputation that clings to the person.
A practical reading order: 1. the sign on the MC, 2. the 10th ruler and the house where it stands, 3. planets inside the 10th, 4. the 6th house for daily work. Take a Virgo 10th with its ruler Mercury in the 6th house: the sign points to careful, detailed work, and Mercury in the 6th ties that to daily routine. Neither is a verdict, and a chart cannot say whether a job will be found, kept or well paid.
The 10th is the house astrologers name first for career questions, and the four steps above keep the reading to what the chart actually shows.
The 10th house in traditional astrology
Because it opens at the top of the chart, it is an angular house, in the strongest group in traditional astrology, and a planet here is said to act in plain view. Lilly thought Jupiter and the Sun very fortunate in it.
In annual profections, the Hellenistic timing method, the year of life moves one house per birthday, so ages 9, 21, 33, 45, 57 and 69 are 10th-house years. The ruler of that sign is called the lord of the year; the method does not say what the year brings.

Questions about the 10th house
Why is the 10th house called the midheaven, and what is it for?
Hellenistic astrologers called the place the midheaven. Modern books name it the house of career, reputation and public image. Lilly's 1647 list adds honour, office, the professions and mothers.
Which house is the career house in astrology?
Astrologers name the 10th first for career and public standing. Others add the 6th for daily work and routine and the 2nd for earning, so a fuller reading checks all three.
What is a strong 10th house?
Traditional astrology calls a house strong when it is angular, and the 10th is one of the four angles, so any planet in it acts in plain view. Lilly liked Jupiter and the Sun there. Modern astrologers also call it strong when several planets sit in it or its ruler is well placed. Strong here means visible, and says nothing about success.
Does the 10th house represent the mother or the father?
Lilly gave this house to mothers. Some modern writers put the father here and the mother on the 4th, and some read the two houses as one axis that covers both parents. The sources disagree, so a chart does not settle it.
What does an empty 10th house mean?
In New York the 10th was empty in 47% of our charts, so it is common. Astrologers then lean on the sign at the start of the house and the planet governing it. Nothing in an empty 10th counts against your work or standing.
Which body part does the 10th house rule?
In Lilly's list it is the knees and hams, the backs of the knees. That is a traditional correspondence and gives no medical advice. Treat it as old symbolism; it is no guide to your knees.
Is the midheaven the same as the 10th house?
Under Placidus, yes: the midheaven is the cusp of the 10th. In Whole Sign the 10th is the 10th sign from the rising sign, and the MC can sit in the 9th, 10th or 11th sign. The MC lands in a different sign than the Whole Sign 10th in 44% of New York charts we cast. The tool above shows both.
Who rules the 10th house?
It depends on the sign at the start of the house. Saturn takes Capricorn and Aquarius, Jupiter takes Sagittarius and Pisces, Mars takes Aries and Scorpio, Venus takes Taurus and Libra, Mercury takes Gemini and Virgo, the Moon has Cancer and the Sun has Leo. Modern astrologers swap in Pluto, Uranus or Neptune for three of them. In the modern scheme of natural rulership Saturn goes with the 10th, through Capricorn; Lilly's own cosignificators for the house were Capricorn and Mars.

Our count: how often the 10th house is full or empty
The house system often changes what sits in your 10th. We cast charts for each day of 1930 through 2025 in five US cities. In New York the two systems disagree on which planets the house holds in 53% of charts, and on the cusp sign in 44%, the midheaven question from the section above. The table shows New York and Anchorage.
Latitude matters too. Anchorage charts leave the Placidus 10th empty 49% of the time, Miami charts 46%. A whole sign gets trapped inside the house in 8% of New York Placidus charts and 17% of Anchorage ones. For the Sun the window is the middle of the day: born between 10:35 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. in New York, your Sun probably stands in the 10th.
| 10th house, Placidus | New York 41° N | Anchorage 61° N |
|---|---|---|
| empty | 46.7% | 48.5% |
| one planet | 33.2% | 31.9% |
| two planets | 13.6% | 12.8% |
| three or more | 6.5% | 6.8% |
| different planets in Whole Sign | 53.2% | 63.2% |
| different cusp sign in Whole Sign | 43.8% | 71.7% |
