Why the Moon belongs in the house of partners
The descendant, the point where the ecliptic crossed the western horizon as you were born, is where the 7th house starts. It covers marriage, business partners, clients and open rivals. The Moon is the fastest body in the chart and the one that tracks daily mood: what you need to feel safe, what you do without thinking, what feels like home. Put that inside the house of other people and astrologers read someone whose security is tied to one particular person, or two.
This is one of the few Moon placements with a written reason behind it. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), wrote that the 7th house "hath cosignificator Libra and Moon." The only planet he names there as a cosignificator is the Moon. So the old books treat her as a natural member of this house, and a Moon here is read as working in her own field.
Modern astrologers hand the 7th to Libra and Venus, a pairing that leaves the Moon out. Her own sign is Cancer, which they pair with the 4th house, the house of home. So a Moon in the 7th is often described as home-making carried into a partnership: you want the relationship to be a place you can live in.
Position matters too. Tradition says planets on the four angles act loudest, and the 7th sits on one of them, so this Moon is hard to hide. Partners see your moods before anything else.
Good, bad or just changeable?
The old lists put Jupiter and Venus among the benefics and Saturn and Mars among the malefics. The Moon is judged more by her condition than by a label. Lilly's sentence about this house points the same way. After naming Libra and the Moon, it warns only about Saturn and Mars.
So condition comes first. The Moon is strongest in her own Cancer and exalted in Taurus. In Capricorn she is in detriment, and in Scorpio she falls. Astrologers describe a well-placed Moon here as a steady, receptive partner who makes a household easy. A poorly placed one gets described as moods that rise and sink with the relationship, or a fear that the other person will pull away. Saturn or Mars squaring or opposing her, the two planets Lilly worries about in this house, makes it worse.
Modern writers add two shadows. One is borrowing your mood from the other person: the evening goes well if they walk in cheerful and badly if they do not. The other is choosing partners who need looking after, because being needed feels like being safe. The remedy they suggest is plain: say what you need out loud and early, and do not wait for someone to guess.
When their Moon falls in your 7th: overlays and composites
Suppose a partner's Moon lands in your 7th. The usual reading is familiarity: they feel like someone you have known for years, you settle in around them quickly and you see a person to share a home and a routine with. When each Moon sits in the other's 7th, a case people search for as "Moon in each other's 7th house," the bond is read as easy and domestic.
People ask who feels it more. The overlay is measured in your chart, so it reports your experience: comfort, and a pull to look after them or be looked after. They may see an ordinary Moon in an ordinary house. What they feel depends on the links between the charts, so check how the Moon touches their Sun, Venus and Moon before you decide it runs both ways.
The houses are yours, so the birth time that counts is yours alone. Their Moon needs more care than a slower planet would, because it moves about 13° a day and can change sign within hours, so a birth date alone is sometimes not enough. The synastry chart calculator will lay one chart over the other for you.
A composite chart averages two charts planet by planet, and a Moon in its 7th suggests a pair whose bond is domestic and protective: looking after each other is the point of the arrangement.
The Moon in each sign, in the 7th house
Count by Whole Sign and the arithmetic is simple: your Moon sign sits six signs away from your rising sign, so the Moon in Aquarius in the 7th goes with Leo rising. Placidus measures the house from the exact descendant degree, which can fall mid-sign, so the pairing holds most of the time and not always. Every line closes with a link to that Moon sign's own page.
♈︎ Moon in Aries in the 7th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
A quick-tempered Moon: feelings arrive fast and leave fast. You want a partner who can hear "I'm upset" without sulking back. A row clears the air for you and is forgotten by dinner. Steve Jobs's Moon, at 7°45′, is in this sign and in the Placidus 7th. Tom Brady's Moon, at 6°23′, shares the sign and reaches the 7th by Whole Sign alone. Moon in Aries
♉︎ Moon in Taurus in the 7th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
Exalted, the Moon's best sign by the old tables. Comfort is how you show love: shared meals, a bed you both like, a partner who is home at the same hour every day. A move or a changed routine unsettles you more than you let on. Diana Ross's Moon, at 13°04′, falls in this sign, and only Whole Sign makes it a 7th-house Moon. Moon in Taurus
♊︎ Moon in Gemini in the 7th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
You need to talk. An afternoon text counts as affection, and a silent house reads as distance. Two or three friends besides the partner keep the relationship light. Goldie Hawn's Moon, at 26°24′, has the same Whole Sign-only status. Moon in Gemini
♋︎ Moon in Cancer in the 7th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Her own sign, and the 7th gets a caretaker: you cook, remember birthdays and adopt the partner's family. The risk is smothering, or sulking in place of saying what is wrong. Jimi Hendrix's Moon, at 28°05′, is in this sign and in the Placidus 7th only, and so is Prince William's, at 4°58′. Gwen Stefani's Moon, at 15°03′, belongs to this sign as well, and Placidus and Whole Sign both seat it in the 7th. Moon in Cancer
♌︎ Moon in Leo in the 7th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Warmth with an audience. You want a partner who is proud to be seen with you and says so in front of friends. Loyalty is real here, and a bruised pride heals slowly. Megan Fox's Moon, at 15°06′, is in this sign and in the Placidus 7th. Amy Poehler was born with the Moon at 22°59′ of Leo, a 7th-house Moon by either count. Jane Fonda's, at 22°00′, shares the sign and reaches the 7th by Placidus only. Moon in Leo
♍︎ Moon in Virgo in the 7th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Care takes the form of jobs done: the tea made, the appointment booked, the cold noticed before the partner mentions it. Worry is the shadow. You can fret over a mood that will pass by morning. Moon in Virgo
♎︎ Moon in Libra in the 7th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
The Moon sits in the very sign Lilly paired with this house, which makes it the most house-like version of the placement. Peace matters more than winning, and an unresolved quarrel is hard to sleep next to. Moon in Libra
♏︎ Moon in Scorpio in the 7th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
The Moon's fall sign. Feeling runs deep and private, and trust comes slowly. Miley Cyrus (26°13′, Whole Sign 7th) and Beyoncé (26°44′, Placidus 7th) both have the Moon here, and James Dean's, at 5°44′, is in the Placidus 7th as well. Moon in Scorpio
♐︎ Moon in Sagittarius in the 7th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
You need air and humor. Feelings come out as jokes first and plain words later, and a partner from another country or background suits the pattern. Being fenced in is what you cannot take. Austin Butler's sits at 6°51′ and reaches the 7th through Placidus only. Moon in Sagittarius
♑︎ Moon in Capricorn in the 7th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
Detriment, the sign opposite Cancer. Feeling is held tight and shown through duty: the bills paid, the car serviced. A partner may read it as cool, and warmth tends to arrive late and last. Cher's Moon is at 18°18′ here, in the 7th under both systems, and Amy Winehouse's is at 0°26′, in the Placidus 7th. Hailee Steinfeld's, at 8°40′, is in the 7th under both systems. Willow Smith's, at 4°21′, is in the Placidus 7th. Moon in Capricorn
♒︎ Moon in Aquarius in the 7th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
Marilyn Monroe's Moon at 19°06′ is here, in the 7th under both systems. Stephen Curry's, at 8°23′, joins it in both. The pattern astrologers describe is a need for friendship and room inside a partnership, with feelings that are easier to discuss than to show. Jessica Alba's Moon, at 26°00′, also falls here, a 7th-house Moon by Whole Sign alone. Moon in Aquarius
♓︎ Moon in Pisces in the 7th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Sensitivity tuned so finely to the partner that you may not know whose mood you are in. Tender and forgiving, sometimes past the point of sense. Time alone is how you find your own weather again. Timothée Chalamet's Moon, at 27°20′, is in this sign and in the Whole Sign 7th; Usher's, at 26°26′, is in the 7th under both systems, and Vanessa Hudgens's, at 10°17′, in the Placidus 7th. Moon in Pisces
A two-day visit: the Moon crossing your 7th
The Moon goes through every house about once a month, so a transit across your 7th is the quickest in the chart and the lightest. Astrologers read a day or two when other people are on your mind: you answer messages, feel a partner's mood sharply and would rather have company than a quiet room. A single Moon day is a light signal, and nobody builds a plan on it.
Across 1930 to 2025 the Moon spent 2.3 days per sign at the median, and 8 visits in 10 ran 2.0 to 2.5 days. The longest was 2.6 days. She returns to the same sign every 27.3 days on average, so a Whole Sign 7th gets a visit about monthly, each one two or three days. A Placidus 7th is seldom a clean 30°, and there each visit comes out slightly longer or shorter.
A full moon falls in your 7th when the Sun is in your 1st, which in Whole Sign terms means the Sun is crossing your rising sign. The Sun takes about a month to cross a sign, so that comes round about once a year, and astrologers read it as a high point for relationship matters. A lunar eclipse is a full moon near the lunar nodes, so one can land in the 7th as well. The full moon calendar lists the dates, and the transit chart places today's Moon on your houses.
Spouse, husband or wife: what the Moon describes
Tradition lets the planet in the 7th color the picture of a partner. A Moon there is read as caring, home-minded, sensitive to atmosphere and subject to moods, someone who remembers what you said last week. That sketches the type who attracts you and whom you keep running into. It does not describe a face, a height or a profession, and no honest reading names those. Three things tilt the sketch: the Moon's sign, the sign on your 7th cusp and that sign's ruler. Look up your cusp on the 7th house page.
Husband or wife, the reading is the same for every chart, whoever owns it. Nothing in the Moon's position sets an age at marriage; astrologers who try to time one look at far more than a single planet, and they disagree among themselves. Divorce and cheating come up as well. Lilly's warning for this house names Saturn and Mars, not the Moon, and no placement can say whether a relationship will end or who will stray. A changeable Moon is read as changeable moods, which is a different thing.
Mother, family and the Moon in the 7th
Plenty of people reach this page from a question about their mother, and the link exists in the tradition: astrologers have tied the Moon to the mother and to the women of a family for centuries, so her house is where they look. Read at the 7th, it turns into a question about patterns. You may look for a partner who cares for you the way you were cared for, or take the caretaker role yourself. Some astrologers also read the mother's own marriage as the model you watched.
None of this grades the relationship. A chart cannot say whether your mother was warm or distant, and the same placement belongs to people with very different families. For home and parents astrologers turn to the 4th and 10th houses; see the 4th house page. What this page can name is a pattern worth noticing: how much of what you want from a partner is something you once wanted from a parent.
How Vedic charts treat the Moon in the 7th
A large share of these searches come from Vedic astrology, with words like kundli, lagna and rashi. There the Moon carries even more weight than in the West: Vedic readers treat her as the planet of the mind and the mother, and the Moon's sign as a main marker of the person. In the directional-strength scheme called dig bala, the Moon is at her best in the 4th. The 7th is not that spot, so a Vedic reader would not call her strongest here by direction and would lean on her sign and her links to other planets.
Vedic astrologers measure the sky against the stars, not the seasons, which puts every planet about 24° earlier in the zodiac than the tropical positions on this page, and they start the houses from that shifted rising sign. The Moon covers 13° in a day, so a 24° shift moves her into another sign for most people and often into another house. Searches about the navamsa, the marriage sub-chart, or about Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu sharing the house point to Vedic techniques we do not cover.
Twenty-six celebrity charts with the Moon in the 7th, nine in both systems
Of the 143 celebrity charts on the site, twenty-six show the Moon in this house. Astro-Databank grades their birth times AA or A, apart from Usher's, a B taken from a biography, and the two systems agree on nine. Amy Poehler, Cher, David Bowie, Gwen Stefani, Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Lawrence, Marilyn Monroe, Stephen Curry and Usher keep it there whichever system you pick, at 22°59′ Leo, 18°18′ Capricorn, 3°50′ Leo, 15°03′ Cancer, 8°40′ Capricorn, 21°11′ Gemini, 19°06′ Aquarius, 8°23′ Aquarius and 26°26′ Pisces in that order. Whole Sign adds Diana Ross, Goldie Hawn, Jessica Alba, Miley Cyrus, Timothée Chalamet and Tom Brady, with the Moon at 13°04′ Taurus, 26°24′ Gemini, 26°00′ Aquarius, 26°13′ Scorpio, 27°20′ Pisces and 6°23′ Aries in that order; Placidus files all of them under the 6th except Chalamet's, which it puts in the 8th. Placidus adds eleven more, each of which Whole Sign files under the 8th: Amy Winehouse, Austin Butler, Beyoncé, James Dean, Jane Fonda, Jimi Hendrix, Megan Fox, Prince William, Steve Jobs, Vanessa Hudgens and Willow Smith, with the Moon at 0°26′ Capricorn, 6°51′ Sagittarius, 26°44′ Scorpio, 5°44′ Scorpio, 22°00′ Leo, 28°05′ Cancer, 15°06′ Leo, 4°58′ Cancer, 7°45′ Aries, 10°17′ Pisces and 4°21′ Capricorn in that order.
Sign and house are separate questions, and this set shows it. Seven of the twenty-six Moons are in a weak sign: four in Capricorn, her detriment (Cher at 18°18′, Hailee Steinfeld at 8°40′, Amy Winehouse less than half a degree in, Willow Smith at 4°21′), and three in Scorpio, her fall (Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, James Dean). Diana Ross's Moon in Taurus, at 13°04′, is the one in her exaltation, and three Moons stand in her own sign, Cancer: Gwen Stefani's, at 15°03′, Jimi Hendrix's, at 28°05′, and Prince William's, at 4°58′. Gemini, Aquarius, Pisces, Leo, Aries and Sagittarius are neither her home nor a weak sign, so Amy Poehler, David Bowie, Jennifer Lawrence, Jane Fonda, Goldie Hawn, Jessica Alba, Marilyn Monroe, Stephen Curry, Tom Brady, Usher, Timothée Chalamet, Megan Fox, Steve Jobs, Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler carry no sign verdict.
Megan Fox is the one who named her Moon house herself. On Chelsea Handler's show she read her chart and said her "Moon is in the 7th house... 7th house is in Cancer", and Astro-Databank notes that this matches the birth data. It matches under Placidus only, since Whole Sign moves her Leo Moon to the 8th.
Twenty-six charts out of 143 are too few to say much about the Moon here. What they show is the seam: Placidus counts twenty of the twenty-six, Whole Sign fifteen, and the nine names both systems agree on are Amy Poehler, Cher, David Bowie, Gwen Stefani, Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Lawrence, Marilyn Monroe, Stephen Curry and Usher.

Questions about Moon in the 7th house
What does the Moon in the 7th house mean?
The Moon, the planet of needs and moods, was in the sector of sky that tradition gives to partners at your birth. The picture is someone who feels safest in a close relationship, picks up a partner's moods fast and wants a shared home. It comes from tradition and predicts nothing.
Does the Moon in the 7th house help a marriage?
It can. Lilly counted the Moon among this house's cosignificators, and a Moon in Cancer or Taurus is described as steady. A Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio, or one pressed by Saturn or Mars, is described as harder going. No placement promises a marriage or rules one out.
Does this placement say anything about my mother?
It points to a theme, not a verdict. Astrologers tie the Moon to the mother, and in the 7th some read a pattern of seeking mother-like care in partners or giving it. Whether your mother was close or distant is beyond what a chart can say.
Is an early marriage written into the Moon in the 7th?
Nothing in a chart sets the age you marry. The Moon here is read as a wish for a shared home, which some astrologers link with settling down young, and others weigh against Saturn or the sign of the Moon. Treat any age you read online as a guess.
Can the Moon in the 7th mean divorce or cheating?
Astrologers do not read either from one planet in one house. Lilly's warning for the 7th names Saturn and Mars, not the Moon. The Moon here is read as changeable feeling, and moods are not the same as a broken marriage.
When their Moon is in my 7th house, who feels it more?
You do, in the sense of the reading. The house is yours, so it describes what you notice: comfort, familiarity, a wish to share a home. What the other person feels depends on the links between the two charts.
Is the Moon exalted or debilitated in the 7th house?
Neither, by the house alone. Exaltation and its opposite belong to signs: the Moon is exalted in Taurus and falls in Scorpio, with Cancer her own sign and Capricorn her detriment. Any of those can sit in the 7th, and then sign and house add up.
How do I read the Moon in the 7th house of a lunar return?
A lunar return chart is drawn for the moment the Moon is back on its birth degree, about once a month. With the Moon in its 7th, astrologers read a few weeks when partners, clients and open disputes get more of your attention. It is a monthly mood, not an event.

Counting the Moon in the 7th: no link to birth time
Our New York run covers every date from 1930 to 2025, 35,064 in all, with one birth moment per date. The Moon fell in the 7th on 8.3% of them by Placidus and 8.4% by Whole Sign. The two systems matched on 4.3%; 49% of the Placidus hits moved to another house once Whole Sign drew the lines.
The Moon behaves differently from the planets that stay near the Sun, so the house tells you nothing about the hour. Among the charts with the Moon in the Placidus 7th, the Sun stood in each of the twelve houses 8% to 9% of the time. Any hour of the day can have the Moon in the 7th. Only a full-moon birth pins it down, with the Sun in the 1st across the chart from her. The table below gives the shares for five cities.
| City | Placidus | Whole Sign | Both |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami 26° N | 8.3% | 8.5% | 4.3% |
| Los Angeles 34° N | 8.3% | 8.3% | 4.2% |
| New York 41° N | 8.3% | 8.4% | 4.3% |
| Seattle 48° N | 8.3% | 8.3% | 4.1% |
| Anchorage 61° N | 8.3% | 8.3% | 3.6% |
Every date from 1930 to 2025 (35,064 per city), one moment of local clock time per date, spread evenly over the day. Shares of clock time, not of people: births are not spread perfectly evenly over the day.

Astrology is a symbolic tradition, not a science; nothing here predicts a marriage, a divorce or a spouse. Positions come from the astronomy-engine ephemeris in the tropical zodiac; house cusps are Placidus unless stated, checked against five published charts to within 0.02°. More in How we work.
