Steve Jobs Birth Chart

A 1988 biography said that for Steve Jobs "the Moon, Sun and rising star were all in Pisces," and Astro-Databank calls that "an impossible combination." The sky bears that out. On February 24, 1955, the Moon entered Aries at 6:06 a.m., and Pisces did not begin to rise over San Francisco until 6:40 a.m., 34 minutes later.

Set for the 7:15 p.m. time on his birth certificate, the chart has a Pisces Sun at 5°45′, an Aries Moon at 7°45′ and Virgo rising at 22°18′ Virgo. Venus and Saturn form a sextile just 0°01′ from exact.

Mercury, the ruler of the Virgo ascendant, stands in Aquarius in the 5th house and moving backward, and astrologers read that as an analytic rising sign working through unconventional ideas. Beneath it, a Pisces Sun at 5°45′ and an Aries Moon at 7°45′ sit in neighboring signs. Water hands over to fire there.

A birth certificate against a book

The data is graded AA, source "BC/BR in hand." On January 24, 2006, the Astro-Databank editor "received birth certificate from Sacramento for time above": 7:15 p.m. standard time, San Francisco.

Before that the record carried 6:00 a.m., taken from Jeffrey S. Young's "Steve Jobs: The Journey is The Reward" (1988). The book says "the Moon, Sun and rising star were all in Pisces." Astro-Databank's verdict: "an impossible combination."

Rising sign, midheaven and Moon calculated by us for each time on February 24, 1955, San Francisco, Pacific Standard Time.

What the sky allowed on February 24, 1955

The Sun was in Pisces the whole day, having entered the sign on February 19, so the question is the Moon and the ascendant. The Moon stayed in Pisces from midnight until 6:06 a.m., and in those hours the ascendant ran through Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius. Astro-Databank says much the same: "the ASC would be in Aquarius, or even Capricorn."

Aquarius held the ascendant until 6:39 a.m. Pisces took it at 6:40 a.m. and kept it until Aries arrived at 7:55 a.m. When Pisces came up, the Moon was already 0°20′ into Aries, 34 minutes past the line, and it stayed in Aries for every minute of Pisces rising.

The old 6:00 a.m. time shows the same problem from the other side. It gives a Pisces Moon at 29°57′, six minutes from leaving, but with 15°53′ Aquarius rising. Sun and Moon match the book, and the ascendant does not.

Virgo rising, Gemini on the midheaven

The certificate time gives an ascendant of 22°18′ Virgo and a midheaven of 21°19′ Gemini. Virgo came up over San Francisco at 5:26 p.m. and stayed until 7:52 p.m.; he was born 109 minutes into that stretch, 37 minutes short of Libra. Gemini took the midheaven at 5:45 p.m.

Virgo and Gemini share a ruler in Mercury, which is retrograde in Aquarius at 14°22′. It sits in the 5th house by Placidus, the 6th by Whole Sign.

Our pages: Virgo rising · Gemini midheaven · Mercury in Aquarius · 5th house.

Aries Moon, with Mars in Aries too

The Moon is at 7°45′ of Aries, about 13 hours into the sign, and it stays until February 26. Mars, at 29°05′, is also in Aries, less than a degree from Taurus.

Placidus puts the Moon in the 7th house (partnerships, in the tradition) and Whole Sign in the 8th. Mars is in the 8th either way, and 1°03′ from an opposition to Neptune in Libra.

Our pages: Moon in Aries · Mars in Aries · Neptune in Libra · 7th house · moon sign calculator.

Venus sextile Saturn, one minute of arc from exact

Venus is at 21°10′ of Capricorn and Saturn at 21°10′ of Scorpio, so the sextile is 0°01′ wide, tighter than any other pair. Astrologers call a sextile an easy link.

Jupiter in Cancer, at 20°30′, trines Saturn within 0°39′ and opposes Venus, 0°40′ from exact. Uranus (24°08′) is in Cancer with Jupiter, 3°38′ away. Both are in the 10th house by Placidus and the 11th by Whole Sign.

Our pages: Venus in Capricorn · Saturn in Scorpio · Jupiter in Cancer · Uranus in Cancer · 10th house.

Five retrograde planets and six cardinal ones

Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were retrograde that evening, appearing to move backward against the stars as seen from Earth. In the tradition a retrograde planet works more privately.

Six planets are in cardinal signs: the Moon and Mars in Aries, Jupiter and Uranus in Cancer, Venus in Capricorn and Neptune in Libra. Cardinal signs open the seasons, which is why the tradition ties them to beginnings. Neptune is at 28°03′, Pluto at 25°19′ of Leo.
