What the 2nd house means
A paycheck stub shows what came in, and a drawer of receipts shows where it went. Both belong to the 2nd house, the second slice of the chart, counted from the rising sign. Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) opens its entry with a list: wealth or poverty, profit or gain, loss or damage, money lent.
Modern astrologers keep earnings and add what a person owns and uses: tools, a wardrobe, a car, a savings jar. Many go a step further and read the house for values, meaning what you consider worth having and keeping.
Your 2nd house sign
The 2nd house is the one after your rising sign: Aries rising puts Taurus here, Taurus rising puts Gemini, and the rest follow in order. Look yours up with the rising sign calculator. Our headings use Whole Sign. For New York, Placidus moves the cusp to another sign in 25% of charts; the tool above shows both.
♈︎ Aries on the 2nd (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Purchases happen the day the idea shows up, and the receipt is sometimes found a month later. Income favors work where effort shows quickly: sales, trades, anything with a visible finish line. What this sign will not sell is its independence, so a boss who micromanages costs it more than a low salary.
♉︎ Taurus on the 2nd (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
Spending is slow and well researched. The shelf of things kept for ten years is the proof. Alan Leo gave Taurus and Venus to this house, so steady pay, land, food and craft all fit. The one thing it keeps off the market is its comfort: a raise is no use if the job costs sleep.
♊︎ Gemini on the 2nd (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
Money arrives from several small sources at once, such as a side gig, a few clients or a commission here and there, and it goes out in many small amounts too. Earning by talking, writing, teaching or trading information suits it. A Gemini cusp does not give its time to a single dull task for long.
♋︎ Cancer on the 2nd (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
A savings jar on the kitchen shelf fits this sign well, since it saves for the household first and itself second. Income comes from food, care, property and family connections. The Moon rules Cancer, so earnings can rise and fall with the month, and anything with sentimental weight stays unsold, however good the offer.
♌︎ Leo on the 2nd (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
Lunch is paid for the whole table, and the best seat in the house is the one chosen for a gift. Pay is easiest where there is an audience, a title or a stage: management, performance, anything with the name attached. Leo here will not sell its dignity, and it dislikes haggling over the price of its time.
♍︎ Virgo on the 2nd (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
Every receipt is filed, and the budget has a column for the unexpected. Money comes from skill and precision: editing, repair, analysis, health work, anything done properly. The sign is cautious with big purchases and generous with small useful ones. Shoddy work stays off the table, even for a client who would not notice.
♎︎ Libra on the 2nd (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Shopping is a matter of taste, and money often goes to the look of things: a good lamp, a tailored jacket, a nicely set table. Income tends to come through partnership, negotiation, design or the law. It avoids work that sets it against people, since harmony is the one thing it keeps.
♏︎ Scorpio on the 2nd (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
Private is the word: few people know what is in the drawer or how much is set aside. Money may come through other people's money, through research or through crisis work. Mars is the older ruler and Pluto the newer, and a sign that guards its resources suits either. It trades no secret entrusted to it.
♐︎ Sagittarius on the 2nd (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
Cash goes to travel, books and the next trip, and a fund for any of the three may never be quite full. Pay can come from teaching, publishing, import and export or anything abroad. The temper is generous and confident. Its freedom to leave is not for sale.
♑︎ Capricorn on the 2nd (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
Ten years of putting a fixed amount aside is normal here, along with a mild horror of debt. Income suits the slow rise, a career with a ladder or a business built to last. Spending is sparing, and quality beats quantity. It will not sell its reputation for a fast profit.
♒︎ Aquarius on the 2nd (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Ideas drive the spending, and the purchases others find odd, such as a gadget nobody asked for or a donation to a cause, make sense to the buyer. Saturn is the old ruler of the sign and Uranus the new. Pay comes from technology, groups and unusual work. Independence is not negotiable, and values come before the price.
♓︎ Pisces on the 2nd (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Generosity drains the account: a lent tool never returned, a loan to a friend who needed it more. Jupiter ruled the sign in the old scheme, Neptune in the new. Income may come from art, music, care or work with a spiritual side. Compassion is not something it trades, and keeping count of what is owed is hard.
Planets in the 2nd house
Roughly 8% of our charts put any single planet here, about what twelve slices of sky would give. A birth between 2:35 a.m. and 4:25 a.m. puts the Sun in it, most likely. Every planet gets a link to our page on it in your sign.
☉ Sun in the 2nd
Earning is part of who you are, and a job that pays and also carries your name suits you. You may value independence in money matters and spend to feel capable. Lilly said the Sun is never well placed in this house, a reading modern astrologers rarely repeat.
☽ Moon in the 2nd
Income and mood move together: a good month feels good and a thin one is felt in the body. The Moon in the 2nd values security, home and familiar things, and money often comes through the public, food or care. Spending follows comfort.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
☿ Mercury in the 2nd
Money comes by way of talk: negotiating, writing, tutoring, trading, keeping the books. You may hold several small income streams and count every receipt. Your values are shaped by what you read and learn, and you keep changing your mind about what is worth the price.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♀ Venus in the 2nd
Beauty and pleasure shape the budget: good food, music, clothes, a table worth sitting at. Earning comes through art, design, hospitality or relationships. Venus is Taurus' natural planet, and Taurus is Alan Leo's sign for the house. Tradition counts it as a benefic, so the placement has a pleasant reputation.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♂ Mars in the 2nd
Money comes fast and goes fast. You spend on the spot. Earning rewards effort, competition and risk, and you value what you fight for. Lilly wrote that Mars is never well placed in this house, though a good sign and good aspects soften that in modern readings.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♃ Jupiter in the 2nd
Generosity marks both earning and spending: you give, lend and invest in other people. Jupiter is Lilly's cosignificator of the house, along with Taurus, so the match is an old one. You value abundance and trust, and the risk is to count on more than the month provides.
♄ Saturn in the 2nd
Saving is a discipline and spending a decision. Income tends to come slowly, through steady work, and you value what lasts. Saturn in the 2nd can make a person anxious about scarcity, so a plain budget is calming. Saving here feels like safety more than thrift.
♅ Uranus in the 2nd
Income arrives irregularly and by unusual routes: freelance, technology, a sudden new contract. Your values are your own, and you may spend on what nobody else would buy. A steady paycheck can feel confining, and you may do best with several sources.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♆ Neptune in the 2nd
Money is hard to pin down: it blurs in the pocket, and the numbers on the receipt do not always register. Neptune in the 2nd gives idealism about what is worth having, and generosity that can turn into being taken advantage of. Income may come through art, healing or service.
By sign: Aries · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♇ Pluto in the 2nd
Money carries weight beyond the amount: power, control, who has it and who does not. Pluto in the 2nd can mean intense focus on earning, large swings in what you own, and a need to rebuild your sense of value. You tend to keep your finances to yourself.
By sign: Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius
If the 2nd house is empty
A lent drill can sit in a neighbor's garage for a year without anyone counting it as a loss, and an empty 2nd works much the same way: no planet stands in the house, and nothing is missing. In our New York sample the 2nd stood bare on 46% of the dates, held one planet on 33%, two on 14% and three or more on 7%. Read an empty house through its cusp sign and that sign's ruler.
Your 2nd house ruler
The planet that governs your cusp sign is the ruler of the 2nd. Its own house and sign tell you where income and self-regard are anchored. Virgo on the cusp hands the job to Mercury. A Mercury placed in the 11th house of groups points money toward contacts and communities more than toward a single employer.
| 2nd house sign | Ruler | Rising sign (Whole Sign) |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Mars | Pisces |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Venus | Aries |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Mercury | Taurus |
| ♋︎ Cancer | Moon | Gemini |
| ♌︎ Leo | Sun | Cancer |
| ♍︎ Virgo | Mercury | Leo |
| ♎︎ Libra | Venus | Virgo |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | Libra |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | Jupiter | Scorpio |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | Saturn | Sagittarius |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | Capricorn |
| ♓︎ Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Aquarius |
Whole Sign and Placidus name the same cusp sign for this house in most charts, so the ruler usually agrees too.
Money or values: the 2nd and the 8th house
"Movable goods" is Lilly's phrase for what the 2nd holds: the things a person owns and can carry or sell, plus money lent out and money earned. The opposite house on the same axis is the 8th house, which tradition gives to money that comes from other people. So the 2nd is the money that is yours, and the 8th the money you share or owe.
Astrologers draw the same line between earning and inheriting, or between a salary and a joint obligation. Reading the pair together shows how a person handles both: a sign that spends freely on the 2nd can be cautious on the 8th, and the reverse is just as common.
Self-worth in the 2nd house
Modern psychological astrology gives the house a second meaning: self-worth, the sense that you have something of value to offer. Lilly's list has nothing like it. The reasoning is that what you own and earn is a mirror of what you think you are worth.
Used that way, the house asks questions: what do you value, what would you refuse to sell, what do you spend on without thinking? Read it as a prompt for reflection. The chart makes no promise about money, and a full or an empty 2nd house says nothing about whether you will have enough.
The 2nd house in traditional astrology
In rank the 2nd is a succedent house, in the middle between the angular and cadent kinds, and Lilly mentions a Latin name for it, Anaphora. Old texts call it averse to the ascendant, since it forms no classical aspect with it. No planet has its joy in the 2nd.
Lilly ties the house to the neck and to Jupiter and Taurus, which is one scheme among several. Alan Leo's natural rulership gives the house to Taurus and Venus, which is why the sensual side (food, comfort, good fabric) often turns up in modern descriptions.

Questions about the 2nd house
Which topics belong to the 2nd house?
Earned money, possessions, spending and the values behind them. Lilly listed wealth or poverty, profit, loss and money lent, and later writers add self-worth.
Is the 2nd house a good house?
Tradition ranks it in the middle, as a succedent house: weaker than the angular houses, stronger than the cadent ones. Old texts also call it averse, because it forms no classical aspect with the ascendant. Neither label is a verdict. A good 2nd means only that the planets and the ruler are well placed.
What are the best planets in the 2nd house?
Jupiter is Lilly's cosignificator for the house, along with Taurus, and Venus is the natural planet of Taurus in the modern scheme, so both are the comfortable placements. Tradition counts them as benefics. They describe a leaning toward generosity and pleasure in what you have, and promise no income.
Why does Lilly say the Sun and Mars are never well placed in the 2nd house?
In his entry Lilly wrote that "Sun and Mars are never well placed in this house". Lilly gives that verdict without a reason we can quote. Few current writers repeat it, and they read both planets by their sign and aspects.
Does an empty 2nd house mean anything?
An empty house is no loss. Our New York count found it bare in 46% of charts. Read the cusp sign, locate its ruler, and look at Jupiter, Lilly's cosignificator here, and Venus, the planet of Taurus.
Who rules my 2nd house?
It follows the cusp sign. For Aries or Scorpio it is Mars, for Taurus or Libra it is Venus, and for Gemini or Virgo it is Mercury. Cancer gives you the Moon and Leo the Sun. Sagittarius or Pisces points to Jupiter, Capricorn or Aquarius to Saturn. Modern practice also lets Pluto take Scorpio, Uranus take Aquarius and Neptune take Pisces. Your own ruler, and the house it stands in, is named by the tool above.
Does the 2nd house govern a body part?
Lilly assigned it the neck and the back of the neck toward the shoulders, which matches Taurus. This is from a 1647 textbook's map of the body and has no medical basis.
Is Chiron in the 2nd house about money?
Readers of Chiron describe it here as a sore point about money, possessions or worth: an uneasy feeling that you do not have enough, or deserve less than others. The same writers often add that people with this placement become good at helping others find their own value. The old texts never mention Chiron, since Charles Kowal discovered it only on November 1, 1977. To see whether yours sits here, use a chart that lists it.

Full, empty or in between: the 2nd in our charts
Is a house the same size in every city? The Placidus 2nd shrinks and stretches with latitude. We ran one chart per day from 1930 through 2025 for five US cities. The 2nd is empty in 48% of the Anchorage charts and 46% of the Miami ones. A whole sign hides inside this house under Placidus for 9% of the New York dates and 21% of the Anchorage dates.
Switch systems and the 2nd cusp lands in another sign in 25% of charts. Only the 1st and the 7th change less often, and the 6th, 8th and 12th share the same low figure, while the cast of planets changes for 51%: most charts keep the sign, and about half change who is inside.
