What the 3rd house means
"Brethren, sisters, cousins or kindred, neighbours, small journeys": that is how William Lilly's 1647 textbook opens the list for this house, and it goes on to letters, rumours and messengers. Later astrologers keep the list and widen it to first schooling, the way a person speaks and writes, and the daily circuit of errands. Think of the 1st as yourself and the 3rd as the street you grew up on and the people who lived on it.
Your 3rd house sign
Two babies born a few hours apart usually have different rising signs, and the 3rd house sign moves with them. By Whole Sign it is the third sign forward, counting your rising sign as the first: Aries rising has Gemini here, Taurus rising has Cancer. To get your rising sign, run your birth data through our rising sign calculator. Under Placidus another sign turns up in 40% of the births we counted for New York, so the tool prints both answers.
♈︎ Aries on the 3rd (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Interrupting is the habit, and saying it first and polishing it later is the method. A brother or sister may be a sparring partner who argues for sport, and a neighbor learns to expect a knock at any hour. Errands are done at a run, usually with the engine still going.
♉︎ Taurus on the 3rd (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
A slow, chosen voice is typical, and a letter written here is read twice before it is sent. Venus governs this one, and it suits the brother or sister who cooks well, keeps things for years and wears a hand-me-down jacket until the elbows give out. Short trips follow one familiar route.
♊︎ Gemini on the 3rd (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
In Alan Leo's scheme Gemini belongs to this house by nature, and Mercury rules it. The result is a quick talker with three tabs of reading open and a pen behind one ear. Siblings are close in age or close in wit, and the commute is where half the thinking gets done.
♋︎ Cancer on the 3rd (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
When the talk turns to family, the words come out softly and carry memories with them. The Moon rules the sign, and this house is its joy, so brothers, sisters and the people next door can feel like extra rooms of the home. Short trips tend to end at a relative's door.
♌︎ Leo on the 3rd (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
By dessert, the storyteller of the family has the whole table listening. Messages are written with flair and signed with a flourish. A sibling may be the loyal fan or the rival for the spotlight, and the neighbors know your name because you waved first.
♍︎ Virgo on the 3rd (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
This cusp often proofreads the family's emails and spots the typo on the sign. Mercury rules it, as it does Gemini, but here it sorts and corrects. A sibling may be the careful one, a neighbor the person who notices the leak, and the daily route is timed to the minute.
♎︎ Libra on the 3rd (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
Letters are drafted twice, once to say it and once to say it kindly. Siblings are the first people you learned to bargain with, and a fair neighbor is one who returns what was borrowed. Short trips go better with company, and a pleasant street counts for a lot.
♏︎ Scorpio on the 3rd (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Questions that stop a room belong to this cusp, and so do silences that say more than the answer. A sibling bond can be fiercely loyal or tightly closed, and a neighbor's secrets stay with you. Daily travel is quiet, and the mind goes digging on the way.
♐︎ Sagittarius on the 3rd (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
Picture a sibling who is always planning the next trip and a neighbor with a flag from somewhere far. Talk is frank, funny and sometimes tactless, and a postcard from this sign arrives with three exclamation marks. Even short trips are treated as expeditions.
♑︎ Capricorn on the 3rd (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
Plain sentences, few of them, and every one meant. A brother or sister may be the responsible one, older in manner even if younger in years, and neighbors know you as someone who shows up. The school run or commute is timed, planned and rarely skipped.
♒︎ Aquarius on the 3rd (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
Odd facts and firm opinions are the stock in trade here. Siblings may be the friends you chose, or the relatives who think differently from everyone else, and a neighbor can be an inventor or a volunteer. Short trips go by bike or bus rather than the usual route.
♓︎ Pisces on the 3rd (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Words arrive as images first, and a message may take a while to turn into a sentence. A sibling can be a dreamer or someone who needs looking after, and the neighbor is the one who leaves soup at your door. The commute is where the best ideas surface, sometimes at the wrong stop.
Planets in the 3rd house
A postcard is a fair picture of this house: short, sent from nearby, and about whatever caught the writer's eye. A planet here shapes what that message says and how fast it goes out. Each planet below has a sign-by-sign page of its own, linked underneath.
☉ Sun in the 3rd
With the Sun here, talking and learning are part of how you shine: you explain, host the conversation, teach the younger one how it works. A brother or sister may hold up a mirror to your self-image, and the neighborhood is where you are known. Short trips usually carry a purpose, such as a visit or a class.
☽ Moon in the 3rd
Moods show up in speech: you talk when you feel something and go quiet when you do not. Siblings and neighbors are tied to your sense of home, and a message from one can change your day. Hellenistic astrologers gave the Moon its joy here, and Lilly's line for the Moon in the 3rd is "much travel, trotting and trudging", a life of errands.

☿ Mercury in the 3rd
The talk-and-paper planet sits in the talk-and-paper house. Writing, reading, quick study and a good memory come with it, and the mind keeps several threads going at once. Siblings may be talkative or bookish. Natural rulership pairs Mercury with this house through Gemini.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♀ Venus in the 3rd
The voice is pleasant and the letters kind with Venus here. Brothers, sisters and neighbors tend to be easy company, and a short trip taken for pleasure suits it. Persuading comes more easily than arguing, and a quarrel with a sibling is more likely to be smoothed over than settled.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♂ Mars in the 3rd
Mars sharpens speech: direct, fast, sometimes cutting. A row with a sibling or a neighbor is the classic picture, and so is the brother who races you to the corner. Lilly names Mars, with Gemini, as a cosignificator of this house, so the pairing is old. Short trips happen at speed.

♃ Jupiter in the 3rd
Jupiter widens the reach of talk. Generous siblings, helpful neighbors and teachers who notice you are the picture, and short courses and a lot of reading come with it. Tradition counts Jupiter a benefic. The habit to watch is agreeing to more than a week can hold.
♄ Saturn in the 3rd
Speech is careful and learning slow and thorough under Saturn. A sibling may be older, strict or far away, or the care of one may fall to you early. Lessons about siblings or early school can come with it. A serious student and a precise writer fit the placement too.
♅ Uranus in the 3rd
Uranus makes thinking fast and sideways. Ideas arrive in bursts, a sibling may be the odd one out, and routes change on a whim. Learning suits unusual formats such as night classes or self-teaching. Speech can be blunt and can interrupt itself.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♆ Neptune in the 3rd
Neptune blurs the edges of messages. Words come out as hints and images, and what a sibling or neighbor said can be remembered kindly or not at all. Poetry, music and fiction come easily; dates, directions and fine print need a second look.
By sign: Aries · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♇ Pluto in the 3rd
Pluto gives talk weight. A sentence can land harder than intended, and the topics that hold attention are secrets, power and what lies under the surface. A bond with a sibling or neighbor can be intense, with loyalty and rivalry close together. Short trips may matter more than they look.
By sign: Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius
If your 3rd house is empty
A bare 3rd is common. Under Placidus nothing stands in it on 46% of dates for New York; a single planet does on 33%, a pair on 14%, and a trio or more on 7%. With nobody home, the cusp sign and its governing planet carry the reading, and that planet is the next section.
Your 3rd house ruler
The cusp sign gives the style of your talk; its ruler shows where that talk is aimed. Libra on the 3rd makes Venus the ruler. Put that Venus in the 11th house and the talk, the letters and the short trips get tied to friends, clubs and shared causes.
| 3rd house sign | Ruler | Rising sign (Whole Sign) |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Mars | Aquarius |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Venus | Pisces |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Mercury | Aries |

Brothers, sisters and neighbors
The school bus is a good picture of the 3rd house: the same few faces every morning, a seat shared with a brother or the kid from three doors down, a short ride that teaches you how to talk to the people near you. Lilly's list names those people, and astrologers today read the house for the early, close relationships, including the sibling who was also a classmate.
The Hellenistic name for this house is Goddess (Greek thea), and the Moon takes its joy here, according to Chris Brennan's study of the planetary joys. Vettius Valens linked the Goddess to the mother, through the Moon, so some ancient readers looked for her here as well as for siblings.
A chart cannot count your siblings or say how you get along. It gives a style of closeness, set by the cusp sign and its occupants, and the old lists name topics only. If you are an only child, the house still covers cousins, early classmates and the neighbor who kept a spare key for your family.
The 3rd and 9th houses: near and far
Six signs separate the 3rd from the 9th, so the two face each other straight across the chart. The 3rd holds the near side of that line: the spelling test, the route to work, the phone call with your sister, the sibling's old coat that fits now.
The far side has its own page: see the 9th house for foreign trips, belief and degrees. A planet at one end looks across at the other by opposition, so a restless 3rd is often read together with the 9th. The errands show the habit, and the long trips show how far it goes.
The 3rd house in traditional astrology
Cadent is the traditional label, the weakest group in the ranking next to the 6th, 9th and 12th. Yet Lilly says outright that this is the joy of the Moon, so a weak house can still be a happy one. Some readers today treat cadent houses as background workers, and that suits a house about ordinary days.
Two schemes give the house a natural sign. Natural rulership, which Alan Leo set out early in the 20th century, pairs it with Gemini and Mercury, and Lilly pairs it with Gemini and Mars. Both put talk and movement at the center, with different tempers: Mercury quick and curious, Mars quick and blunt.

Questions about the 3rd house
Which areas of life does the 3rd house cover?
Siblings, cousins, neighbors, short trips, letters and messages, and the everyday way you speak, write and learn. Lilly's 1647 list is the source of most of it, and later astrologers add early schooling and the daily commute.
Is the 3rd house good or bad?
Neither. Tradition ranks it cadent, the weakest group, yet Lilly also calls it the joy of the Moon, so it is no house of trouble. Some readers today see cadent houses as quiet workers, and for a house about ordinary days that fits. The cusp sign, its ruling planet and any occupants count for more than the label.
Who rules the 3rd house?
The planet that governs the cusp sign. Mercury has Gemini and Virgo, Venus has Taurus and Libra, Mars has Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter has Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn has Capricorn and Aquarius, with the Moon over Cancer and the Sun over Leo. In the modern scheme Pluto, Uranus and Neptune take Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces. As for the house itself, Alan Leo's natural rulership pairs it with Mercury and Lilly pairs it with Mars.
Where do I find my 3rd house sign?
Enter the date, hour and city of birth in the tool above. It names the sign on your 3rd cusp, the planet over it and whoever stands inside. By hand, in Whole Sign, count three signs from your rising sign, with the rising sign as number one.
Which part of the body does the 3rd house cover?
Lilly gives it the shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. That is old symbolism with no medical content; a doctor is the person to ask about a real shoulder.
What does Saturn in the 3rd house mean?
Astrologers today describe careful speech, slow and thorough learning, and a serious attitude toward siblings, school and writing. The old scheme counts Saturn a malefic, so its readings here are more cautious. Both describe themes and forecast nothing; the sign Saturn stands in and the aspects it makes change how the placement looks.
Does Chiron matter in the 3rd house?
Chiron stands for a wound that turns into a way of helping others, in the modern view, and in the 3rd that points to speech, writing, school and siblings. A person might carry an old difficulty with words or with a brother or sister and turn it into patience as a listener or teacher. Charles Kowal spotted it in 1977, more than three centuries after Lilly's list of brethren and messengers was printed. A chart program that lists it will give its sign, and your birth time then fixes the house.
Why does a second site name another 3rd house sign?
Whole Sign counts the 3rd from the rising sign, and Placidus cuts the sky by clock time, so it can land one sign along. Both are in regular use. Our New York runs disagree on the cusp sign on 40% of dates.

The 1st never changes sign between systems, but the 3rd does on 40% of dates for New York, a share only the 4th and 10th exceed. The set of planets inside changes on 52%. Every date since 1930 went through five US cities, and the table sets New York beside Anchorage.
Latitude nudges the empty share: 46% of Miami dates against 47% of Anchorage dates. A whole sign sits tucked between the two cusps on 8% of New York Placidus dates and 17% of Anchorage ones. The Sun stands in the 3rd for New York births between 12:25 a.m. and 2:20 a.m., deep in the night.
