What the 8th house means
Read William Lilly's 1647 chapter as an inventory and the 8th house holds the belongings of the dead, how they died, their wills, legacies and testaments, and who inherits. He adds a wife's dowry and says the house signifies fear and anguish of mind. Most of that list is about transfer: something passing from one owner to another, or from one state of life to a different one.
Modern astrologers keep the transfer and widen it. They read this house for joint finances, taxes, debts, insurance, sexual intimacy, grief and the experiences that change a person for good.
The word death in the old lists is the name of a topic. Lilly's list did include "what kind of death a man shall die", and we do not use a chart for that question.
Your 8th house sign
How you handle shared things starts with the 8th cusp sign. Number the signs from your rising sign (1) up to 8 for the Whole Sign answer. Aries rising puts Scorpio there, Taurus rising puts Sagittarius. If your rising sign is unknown, our rising sign calculator can look it up.
♈︎ Aries on the 8th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Direct and quick about money held with others. Joint decisions get made fast, sometimes before the other person has finished reading the paperwork. Intimacy is bold, and grief may come out as anger. Mars is the ruler, so a dispute over shared costs tends to be settled in a single hard conversation.
♉︎ Taurus on the 8th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
Slow, careful and protective about what is jointly owned. A joint account is checked often, and a loan is repaid to the last cent. Intimacy builds through touch and routine, with little talk. Loss is met with stillness, and change is accepted only after a long look at it.
♊︎ Gemini on the 8th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
Questions come before commitments. Shared money is discussed, compared, written down and sometimes renegotiated a few times. Intimacy needs words, and an affair of the mind can matter more than one of the body. Two sources of shared income, or two different attitudes to a debt, are a theme.
♋︎ Cancer on the 8th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
Shared things carry feeling. A family home, a parent's savings or a joint account with a spouse is held with some worry about security. Moods affect money decisions, since the Moon is the ruler. Grief is deep and slow, and intimacy asks for a feeling of safety before anything else.
♌︎ Leo on the 8th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Pride is attached to what is shared. A partner's income, a family business or an inheritance can be a matter of status as much as cash. Generosity is typical, as is a dislike of being asked for accounts. Intimacy is warm and dramatic, and loss is felt as a hit to the self.
♍︎ Virgo on the 8th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Spreadsheets, receipts and a filed tax return suit this cusp. Shared money is managed in detail, sometimes to the point of nagging. Intimacy is shy at first and shown through acts of care. Grief is processed by doing practical tasks for the family.
♎︎ Libra on the 8th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Equal shares, written terms and a mediator rather than a fight: fairness decides how things are divided, and the sign prefers an agreement to a standoff. Venus is the ruler, so partners with taste and manners appeal, and money tensions are smoothed over, occasionally for too long.
♏︎ Scorpio on the 8th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
The sign matches the house's themes, and the traditional ruler is Mars, the modern one Pluto. Intensity about secrets, trust, jealousy and control of shared resources is the typical reading. Change comes as a break and a rebuild, and loss is faced head on.
♐︎ Sagittarius on the 8th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
Optimism colors joint money, and so can overspending. Shared funds go to travel, school fees or a bet on a venture abroad. Intimacy is frank and humorous, and a partner who cannot be pinned down suits better than one who asks for constant reassurance.
♑︎ Capricorn on the 8th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
Debt is taken seriously: mortgages, pensions and long contracts are weighed for years. Control of shared funds may rest with the older or more cautious partner. Intimacy is reserved and loyal, and grief is carried quietly and without display.
♒︎ Aquarius on the 8th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
Unusual arrangements fit: separate accounts inside a marriage, a cooperative, money pooled with friends. Detachment about loss can look cold, though it is often a way to cope. Intimacy leans toward the mental and the unconventional, and trust grows when a partner allows space.
♓︎ Pisces on the 8th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
Boundaries around shared money may be loose. A person with this cusp gives, lends and forgives, and sometimes cannot say exactly what is owed. Intimacy is tender and imaginative. Compassion for another's loss is strong, and grief may be mixed with a wish to escape it.
Planets in the 8th house
A table is covered in tax forms and a will, and each planet takes a different seat. Each paragraph ends with links to our planet-in-sign pages for it.
☉ Sun in the 8th
Identity is tied to shared resources and to change. A pull toward psychology, research, finance and any work around crisis fits the Sun here, along with a person who finds out who they are through intense experience. The house sits off the angles, so the Sun works out of sight instead of on stage.
☽ Moon in the 8th
Feelings run deep and are kept private. A Moon here brings emotional reliance on a partner's resources, a strong response to loss and a long memory. Money and mood are tied together, and family property or an inheritance may carry a charge.

☿ Mercury in the 8th
Curiosity about hidden things. Mercury here suits research, investigation, insurance, tax and legal work, and long talks about the difficult subjects most people avoid. Contracts about shared money get read carefully. Secrets are kept easily, and found out easily as well.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♀ Venus in the 8th
Pleasure and money get mixed together. Attraction to resourceful partners, strong physical intimacy and gifts that carry weight mark Venus here. It is a gentler placement in a difficult house, though not the comfortable one for her, since her joy is the 5th.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♂ Mars in the 8th
Force and heat go into shared matters. The 8th is linked with Scorpio and Mars, so this is a natural fit. It can show a sharp temper in disputes over money, strong drive, and a person who bargains hard. Older books are wary of Mars in this house, which is a hard one for him.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♃ Jupiter in the 8th
Generous in what is shared. Helpful partners and relatives, easy credit and a taste for risk bigger than the savings are Jupiter's mark here. It softens a hard house. Its warning is overextension, and it promises no money.
♄ Saturn in the 8th
Caution about debt, trust and loss. Slow, careful finances, a fear of dependence and a long relationship with grief come with Saturn here. The 8th is a hard house, so older books are gloomy about it. Modern astrologers stress patience and a hard-won sense of security.
♅ Uranus in the 8th
Sudden changes in what is shared. Irregular income from partners, unusual financial arrangements and abrupt shifts in close relationships show up with Uranus here. A person with it values independence in money matters, and is not quick to merge accounts.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♆ Neptune in the 8th
Blurred lines around what is owed. Neptune here is linked with generosity that has no limit, confusion in joint finances and a spiritual curiosity about death and what lies beyond. Modern astrologers advise clear paperwork and trusted advisers, but that is advice and nothing the chart shows.
By sign: Aries · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♇ Pluto in the 8th
Power, trust and control in the closest ties. Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio, so this is its natural house in modern practice. Intense intimacy, a strong reaction to loss and a willingness to take apart what no longer works go with it. Money may be tied to other people's control.
By sign: Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius
An empty 8th house: what it means
Counting New York births, 47% had nothing in the 8th, 32% had one planet, 14% two and 7% three or more. On a New York clock the Sun stands here from 2:10 p.m. to 5:10 p.m., yet the house itself is usually quiet. Astrologers read the cusp sign and its ruler, and the next section covers both.
Your 8th house ruler
A will names an executor, and an 8th house names a ruler in a similar way: whichever planet governs the sign at its start. Say a chart has a Mercury sitting in the 2nd house. Trace it back: Mercury rules Virgo, and Virgo is on the 8th cusp, so astrologers read a partner's resources as tied to that person's own earnings. Where the ruler sits shows where shared money and deep change tend to come from.
| 8th house sign | Ruler | Rising sign (Whole Sign) |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Mars | Virgo |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Venus | Libra |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Mercury | Scorpio |
| ♋︎ Cancer | Moon | Sagittarius |
| ♌︎ Leo | Sun | Capricorn |
| ♍︎ Virgo | Mercury | Aquarius |
| ♎︎ Libra | Venus | Pisces |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | Aries |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | Jupiter | Taurus |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | Saturn | Gemini |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | Cancer |
| ♓︎ Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Leo |
Whole Sign and Placidus can put different signs on this cusp, which means a different ruler. In New York that is the case on 25% of dates, so check both if the answer matters to you.
Is the 8th house a money house?
Only in part. The 8th is about other people's money: a spouse's income, a joint account, a loan, a tax bill, an inheritance, an insurance payout. Your own earnings and possessions belong to the 2nd, which sits directly opposite across the chart. Astrologers call this pair the 2nd to 8th axis, what is yours against what is shared.
Nothing in the 8th shows that money is coming. Lilly's wills and legacies describe the subject of the house and name no sum. A planet here, or a ruler placed well, shows an attitude to shared resources: how you trust, divide and let go.
Someone else's planets in your 8th house
Lilly's "dowry of the wife" shows the oldest sense of what is shared in a union: what each person brings. When two charts are laid over each other, a partner's planets land in your houses. If their Venus, Moon or Mars falls in your 8th, astrologers describe the bond as intimate and intense, with money and trust as themes.
This needs both birth times. Writers disagree on whether such overlays are hard or helpful, and the question of whether 8th house synastry is bad has no fixed answer. The placement describes how the closeness feels, and it says nothing certain about how long the relationship will last.
The 8th house in traditional astrology
Like the 2nd, 6th and 12th, the 8th makes no classical aspect to the 1st, which tradition calls averse. That is one reason older books treat it warily. The 8th is a succedent house, so its planets rank below those on an angle.
Alan Leo's early 20th century scheme links the house with Scorpio and Mars, and later astrologers with Pluto.

Questions about the 8th house
What does the 8th house represent in astrology?
Shared resources and what is passed on: joint money, debts, taxes, wills and legacies, plus intimacy, loss and deep change. Lilly's 1647 list includes the estate of the dead, a wife's dowry and who inherits.
How can I work out my 8th house?
Run your birth details through the tool above and look at its 8th house line for the cusp sign, ruler and planets. By hand in Whole Sign, the rising sign is 1 and the 8th is the sign you reach at 8.
What is a strong 8th house?
There is no agreed test. Some astrologers mean a house with several planets, others a ruler in a comfortable sign or an angle of the chart. Tradition ranks succedent houses below angular ones, so strong here means busy and well supported.
Does the 8th house mean death?
Traditional astrologers listed death among its topics, together with wills and inheritance, and older horary books did try to judge the manner of death from it. We do not: nothing on this page tells when or how anyone will die, and a chart is not a source for that. Modern astrologers read the house as change and loss of many kinds.
Is the 8th house a bad house?
Tradition ranks it among the harder houses. It is succedent and makes no aspect to the ascendant, which the old books call averse. Lilly's list gives it fear and anguish of mind, death and the goods of the dead. Newer books keep those topics and add joint money, intimacy and change. The house covers sharing and loss, which makes it a subject and predicts nothing.
Which planets are bad in the 8th house?
Tradition calls Mars and Saturn malefics, and the 8th is one of its harder houses, so they get the cautious readings. These are traditional descriptions of difficulty and predict nothing.
Which house is opposite the 8th?
The 2nd house, which covers your own money and possessions. The 8th covers what you hold with others. They sit on opposite sides of the chart, and astrologers read them as a pair.
How do astrologers read Chiron in the 8th?
Cafe Astrology reads Chiron in the 8th as a heightened sensitivity to attachment and loss, and other astrology guides add intimacy and trust around shared resources, saying early betrayal or grief can leave a lasting mark on how freely a person relies on others. The wound's use is guiding other people: Cafe Astrology calls this an authoritative guide and powerful counselor, and the other guides say such people often steady others through crisis and grief. The name comes from Greek myth, where the centaur Chiron taught Asclepius and Achilles, then was hit by one of Heracles' poisoned arrows and carried a wound that would not heal. Charles Kowal found Chiron on November 1, 1977, so no book from Lilly's day could have covered it. One orbit of the Sun takes about 50 years, yet Chiron stays in one sign anywhere from 18 months to just over 8 years, so people born within that stretch share its sign. The house comes from your birth time, and our tool leaves Chiron out, so look in a chart that lists Chiron.
Is a body part tied to the 8th house?
Lilly gave it the genitals, in his 1647 wording. Do not use that to judge health. Read it as tradition, and take body questions to a doctor.

What our charts show about the 8th house
Close to half the time the 8th is empty, but the sign on its cusp is steadier than the planets: Placidus and Whole Sign disagree about the sign on 25% of New York dates and about the planets inside on 50%. The sample is one chart per day across 96 years, in five US cities. Anchorage leaves the 8th empty 51% of the time and Miami 47%, since Placidus houses change size with latitude.
In New York a whole sign hides inside the 8th without a cusp of its own on 9% of dates; in Anchorage it does on 21%. The bottom rows of the table set the two systems side by side for both cities.
| 8th house, Placidus | New York 41° N | Anchorage 61° N |
|---|---|---|
| empty | 47.3% | 50.7% |
| one planet | 32.4% | 29.7% |
| two planets | 13.6% | 11.9% |
| three or more | 6.7% | 7.6% |
| different planets in Whole Sign | 49.6% | 52.3% |
| different cusp sign in Whole Sign | 24.6% | 47.8% |
