The meaning of Venus on your ascendant
The 1st house begins at the ascendant, the degree of the zodiac that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It stands for your body, your temperament and the manner in which you walk into a room, which is why astrologers call it the house of the self. Venus brings taste, affection and a wish to please. Where the two meet, the tradition describes someone whose manner is already an invitation: warm, easy to like and aware of how they come across.
Modern astrologers pair the 1st house with Aries, the sign of Mars, so the house is tied to initiative and going first. That sits oddly beside Venus, who prefers to receive and persuade. The picture that results is a soft way of leading: you get things moving through charm and timing, without pushing.
How the placement is counted changes what it means in practice. In Whole Sign houses, Venus in the 1st house is simply Venus in your rising sign. In Placidus it is Venus between the ascendant and the cusp of the 2nd house, a stretch that can run into the next sign.
The 1st is also an angular house, one of the four (with the 4th, 7th and 10th) that tradition counts as the strongest places in a chart. A planet beside the ascendant is hard to miss, so astrologers read this Venus as the visible one, the quality people name when they describe you. Modern writers add a shadow: if your self-image rests on how others react, their mood becomes yours.
Good or bad: Venus on the ascendant
By the old rules it leans good. In the old scheme Venus is a benefic, second only to Jupiter, and a benefic at the ascendant is read as ease in first meetings. Lilly's 1647 list for this house is less Venus-centered than most web pages suggest, though. He gave the 1st house Aries and Saturn as cosignificators and wrote that "Mercury doth also joy in this house." Venus has no seat of her own here. Her joy is the 5th house.
The outcome turns on how strong Venus is by sign. She is at home in Taurus and Libra and exalted in Pisces. Aries and Scorpio put her in detriment, and Virgo is where she falls. A strong Venus on the ascendant is read as grace that costs no effort. A weak one is read as charm you have to work for, or as a habit of courting people who do not court back. A square from Saturn or Mars adds friction around being liked.
The modern warning is about approval. A Venus this close to the surface can make you agreeable to a fault: you smile through the remark that needed an answer, then wonder why nobody asked what you wanted. Astrologers who give advice here suggest saying the awkward thing early, while the mood is still good.
Synastry: someone's Venus lands in your 1st
In synastry, when a partner's Venus falls in your 1st house, astrologers read a person who makes you feel good about yourself. They notice you, say so, and the first meeting tends to feel warm. You see the best of your own manner reflected back, which is why this overlay is often described as flattering.
Searchers keep asking who feels it more. In an overlay the house is yours, so the reading describes your experience: you feel admired. Whether the other person feels the same depends on the aspects between your two charts, not on this house alone. The reverse case, your Venus in their 1st, is read the other way round: you are the one who lifts their mood.
Your houses depend on your birth time; their Venus needs only a date, because it hardly changes degree within a day. Our synastry chart calculator drops one chart's planets into the other's houses. A composite chart is built from the midpoints between two people's planets, and Venus on its ascendant is read as a couple that shows well: friends find you pleasant company together.
All 12 signs for Venus in the 1st
Whole Sign houses make the 1st house the whole of your rising sign, which means the sign of Venus here doubles as your ascendant: Venus in Taurus in the 1st means Taurus rising. Placidus draws the house from the exact ascendant degree to a cusp that need not fall on a sign border, so the two can part ways. Every entry ends with a link to the longer page for that sign.
♈︎ Venus in Aries in the 1st (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
This is a detriment sign for Venus, and at the ascendant the reading is a direct, quick-to-flirt manner: you say what you like out loud. The style is bold, with a color or a haircut that gets noticed. Impatience in courtship is the usual warning. Shakira's Venus is at 0°20′ here, a Whole Sign 1st-house case. George Clooney's Venus, at 13°04′, is here too, a Placidus 1st-house case. Audrey Hepburn's, at 22°47′, shares the sign: Placidus has it in the 1st, Whole Sign in the 3rd. Venus in Aries
♉︎ Venus in Taurus in the 1st (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
Her own sign, so tradition counts this among the strongest ways to have the placement. Astrologers describe a calm, sensual presence, a pleasant voice and good taste in fabric and food. Changing a look, or a mind, takes you a long time. Venus in Taurus
♊︎ Venus in Gemini in the 1st (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
Charm comes through talk here. Astrologers picture a quick, curious person with expressive hands, friendly with nearly everyone and close to fewer people than it seems. Boredom is the thing that ends a flirtation. Venus in Gemini
♋︎ Venus in Cancer in the 1st (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
A soft, protective manner that makes strangers feel looked after. Your mood shows on your face, so people read how you are before you say it. The charts of Angelina Jolie and Keke Palmer, covered below, both have this sign at the ascendant, with Venus in it. Jack Black's Venus, at 29°11′, is here in the 1st under both systems. Ben Affleck's, at 7°28′, is here too, a Whole Sign 1st-house case. Cameron Diaz's, at 21°20′, is here as well, a Whole Sign 1st-house case. Venus in Cancer
♌︎ Venus in Leo in the 1st (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
Warm, a little theatrical and aware of being watched. You dress to be seen and give generously, and a compliment that goes unspoken stings. Pride is the soft spot. Venus in Leo
♍︎ Venus in Virgo in the 1st (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Venus falls here, and at the ascendant that reads as neat, understated attractiveness and a habit of finding fault with your own looks first. The charm sits in competence and small details: the pressed collar, the remembered name. Blake Lively's Venus is at 2°23′ here and Demi Lovato's at 16°18′, both Placidus 1st-house cases. Bella Hadid's Venus, at 6°03′, is here too, a Whole Sign 1st-house case. Venus in Virgo
♎︎ Venus in Libra in the 1st (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
Own sign again, and the classic picture of poise, tact and a face people find balanced. You are the one who smooths a tense table. Choosing between two outfits can take longer than it should. Venus in Libra
♏︎ Venus in Scorpio in the 1st (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
Another detriment sign, and the manner is magnetic and guarded. People sense depth before they know a thing about you. The intensity can read as intimidating, and trust is handed out late. Sydney Sweeney's Venus is at 0°51′ here, a Whole Sign 1st-house case, and Doja Cat's is at 14°01′, a Placidus one. Frank Ocean's Venus, at 22°07′, is here in the 1st under both systems. Venus in Scorpio
♐︎ Venus in Sagittarius in the 1st (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
A frank, sunny, restless presence. You laugh loudly, move a lot and hold big opinions about travel and belief. Bluntness can undercut the warmth. Katy Perry's Venus is at 6°33′ here, a Placidus 1st-house case. Jimi Hendrix's Venus, at 7°36′, falls here and makes the 1st by Whole Sign alone. Venus in Sagittarius
♑︎ Venus in Capricorn in the 1st (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
A reserved first impression that warms over the years. Astrologers describe dignified, well-made clothes and a charm that improves with age. Others may take you as more serious than you feel. Olivia Rodrigo's Venus, at 18°13′, is here in the 1st under both systems. Venus in Capricorn
♒︎ Venus in Aquarius in the 1st (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Original more than pretty. Your style is hard to place, you befriend before you flirt, and a cool distance makes some people more curious about you. Hozier's Venus, at 10°39′, is here, a Whole Sign 1st-house case. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's, at 13°45′, is in this sign too, in the 1st under both systems. Venus in Aquarius
♓︎ Venus in Pisces in the 1st (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Exalted, and the most gentle version of the placement. A dreamy, empathic look draws projection: people see in you what they hope for. Boundaries blur easily here. Kourtney Kardashian's Venus, at 24°21′, is in the 1st by both counts, with Pisces rising. Simone Biles's, at 19°05′, is here too, in the 1st under both systems. Venus in Pisces
When Venus passes over your ascendant
Transiting Venus crossing your 1st house is read as a short stretch when you feel more attractive and other people respond in kind. Invitations arrive, a new haircut or wardrobe feels right, and you are easier to approach. Astrologers treat it as a good window to begin something social, such as a first date or a launch where you are the face of it.
Venus does not stay long. Her median stay in a sign, over 1930 to 2025, is 25 days. Eight stays in ten ran 24 to 32 days, and one retrograde year stretched a stay to 126 days. She re-enters any given sign about every 345 days, so a Whole Sign 1st house gets a visit roughly once a year. A Placidus 1st house is seldom exactly 30° wide, so in that system the visit is a little shorter or longer.
The transit chart shows where Venus stands right now against your houses. The Venus retrograde page lists the dates to avoid for a makeover: a retrograde over your ascendant is read as a time to rethink your image before you change it.
Looks, style and first impressions
Many people want to know whether this makes you beautiful. A birth chart cannot be read for a face. What astrologers describe is presentation: grooming, taste, a pleasant voice and a smile that arrives a second before you do. Venus on the ascendant is a placement of how you look to others, and that is partly a matter of effort and attitude.
The sign colors the picture. Taurus and Libra are said to give a harmonious, balanced look, Leo a bold one, Capricorn a refined one that ages well. The ruler of your ascendant and any planet close to it add their own touch, so the rest of the chart can pull the picture in another direction. Modern writers also point to your relationship with your own body: how much of your worth you attach to looks is part of this house.
Venus with Jupiter, the Sun, Mercury or Uranus on the ascendant
People often search for this placement together with a second planet in the 1st house. A conjunction blends the two meanings. With Jupiter, the other benefic, astrologers read generosity and an optimistic, expansive manner, with excess as the risk. With Mercury they read wit and a persuasive voice. With Uranus they read charm that surprises, unusual taste and attraction that arrives suddenly.
The Sun is the common companion. Venus never travels far from it, and among our Placidus cases the Sun shares the 1st house with her in 27%. A Venus close to the Sun is read as charm and identity tied together: you are easy to like because you are not hiding. Vedic astrologers add Ketu, the south lunar node, to the list of questions. They read the south node as detachment, so Venus with Ketu is read as less interest in display.
The Vedic view: Venus in the lagna
A large share of the people who type this query are reading a Vedic chart, where the 1st house is called the lagna. Vedic astrologers give Venus the role of karaka for love, comfort and the arts, which means she signifies them wherever she sits. Directional strength, called dig bala, peaks for Mercury and Jupiter in the 1st house and for Venus in the 4th, and it falls to zero for Venus in the 10th. The 1st sits halfway between those two points, so Venus in the lagna gets about half her directional strength, and Vedic readers weigh her mainly by sign and aspects.
The Vedic zodiac is sidereal, about 24° behind the tropical one used on this page, and the houses start from the sidereal ascendant. Your Venus can be in the 1st house in one system and elsewhere in the other. Searchers also ask about the navamsa, a divisional chart Vedic astrologers consult for marriage. It is a separate chart, and this page does not cover it.
Seven cases in both systems, eight in Whole Sign, six in Placidus
Of the 143 charts in our celebrity set (nine have a B time from a biography, the rest AA or A), twenty-one have Venus in the 1st under at least one system, and the systems agree on seven. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Frank Ocean, Jack Black, Keke Palmer, Kourtney Kardashian, Olivia Rodrigo and Simone Biles have it there under both, at 13°45′ Aquarius, 22°07′ Scorpio, 29°11′ Cancer, 28°27′ Cancer, 24°21′ Pisces, 18°13′ Capricorn and 19°05′ Pisces in that order. Angelina Jolie, Bella Hadid, Ben Affleck, Cameron Diaz, Hozier, Jimi Hendrix, Shakira and Sydney Sweeney bring Whole Sign into it, with Venus at 28°09′ Cancer, 6°03′ Virgo, 7°28′ Cancer, 21°20′ Cancer, 10°39′ Aquarius, 7°36′ Sagittarius, 0°20′ Aries and 0°51′ Scorpio respectively. Palmer's chart is the example in the tool above: her Venus is a fraction of a degree past the ascendant, so both systems agree. Jolie's is the contrast: Whole Sign puts her in the rising sign, Cancer, while Placidus sets her in the 12th, above the ascendant. Placidus adds Audrey Hepburn, Blake Lively, Demi Lovato, Doja Cat, George Clooney and Katy Perry, with Venus at 22°47′ Aries, 2°23′ Virgo, 16°18′ Virgo, 14°01′ Scorpio, 13°04′ Aries and 6°33′ Sagittarius in that order; Whole Sign files five of them in the 2nd and Hepburn's in the 3rd.
The charts show the 1st-house seam from several sides. Bessette-Kennedy's, Black's, Ocean's, Palmer's, Kardashian's, Rodrigo's and Biles's Venus are in the 1st by both counts, Palmer's just past the ascendant, Bessette-Kennedy's about three degrees past it (Aquarius rises at 10°44′ and her Venus stands at 13°45′), Black's in the last degrees of Cancer six and a half degrees past it, the other four well inside the rising sign; Kardashian's and Biles's are the two in Pisces, the sign of exaltation. Jolie's Venus sits just before the ascendant, so Placidus counts it in the 12th and Whole Sign in the 1st. Affleck's repeats the pattern a little wider: Cancer rises at 8°34′ and his Venus stands at 7°28′, about a degree short of it. Diaz's is a close case in the same sign: Cancer rises at 22°40′ and her Venus stands at 21°20′, about one and a third degrees short of it. Hadid's is the Virgo-rising version: Virgo rises at 10°37′ and her Venus stands at 6°03′ of the same sign, about four and a half degrees short of the ascendant, so Placidus puts it in the 12th and Whole Sign in the 1st. Hozier's is the Aquarius version: Aquarius rises at 28°45′ and his Venus stands at 10°39′ of the same sign, about eighteen degrees short of the ascendant, so Placidus puts it in the 12th and Whole Sign in the 1st. Hendrix's is the Sagittarius version: Sagittarius rises at 24°41′ and his Venus stands at 7°36′ of the same sign, about seventeen degrees short of the ascendant, so Placidus puts it in the 12th and Whole Sign in the 1st. Shakira's chart, with a B time, repeats Jolie's pattern: Aries rises at 6°23′ and her Venus stands at 0°20′ of Aries, just short of the ascendant, so Placidus puts it in the 12th and Whole Sign in the 1st. Sweeney's is the widest version: her Venus is at the start of Scorpio and her ascendant at the end of the same sign, so Whole Sign files Venus in the 1st while Placidus puts it in the 11th. Perry's runs the other way, because the Placidus 1st house extends past the end of the rising sign. Doja Cat's is the same case with a late ascendant: Libra rises at 29°11′, so most of her Placidus 1st house lies in Scorpio, and her Venus at 14°01′ of that sign counts there while Whole Sign files it in the 2nd. Lively's and Lovato's are the Leo-rising version: Leo rises at 15°22′ and 25°43′, and Venus stands in the next sign, Virgo, at 2°23′ and 16°18′, still inside the Placidus 1st house and in the 2nd by Whole Sign. Clooney's is the Pisces-rising version: Pisces rises at 11°57′ and Venus stands in the next sign, Aries, at 13°04′, still inside the Placidus 1st house and in the 2nd by Whole Sign. Hepburn's is the Aquarius-rising version: Aquarius rises at 28°37′ and her Venus stands two signs on, at 22°47′ of Aries, still inside the Placidus 1st house and in the 3rd by Whole Sign. Hepburn's, Shakira's and Clooney's Venus is in Aries, and Ocean's, Sweeney's and Doja Cat's are in Scorpio, all detriment signs, and Hadid's, Lively's and Lovato's are in Virgo, where Venus falls, while Cancer, Capricorn, Sagittarius and Aquarius carry no such label. Twenty-one charts settle nothing about the placement. They show that the list of 1st-house Venuses changes with the system.

Questions about Venus in the 1st house
Does Venus in the 1st house help with marriage?
The 1st house covers you, and the 7th covers a spouse. Tradition reads Venus on the ascendant as a person who attracts easily, which helps courtship, but it does not decide whether or when you marry.
Does Venus in the 1st house make you beautiful?
No chart can promise looks. Astrologers read grace, taste and a pleasant way of carrying yourself. See the appearance section above.
How do I find out whether Venus is in my first house?
Start with your birth time, since the ascendant moves about 1° every four minutes. The tool above takes the time and place and answers for Placidus and Whole Sign side by side.
Venus in the 1st house or the 12th: why do two sites disagree?
When Venus sits a few degrees before the ascendant, Placidus puts her in the 12th while Whole Sign puts her in the 1st, the whole rising sign. The Jolie and Shakira charts on this page show this, and the Sydney Sweeney chart shows it at its widest, with Venus in the 11th under Placidus. The charts of Katy Perry, Doja Cat, Blake Lively and Demi Lovato show the other edge: Venus in the 1st under Placidus and in the 2nd under Whole Sign.
My Venus is retrograde and in the 1st house. What changes?
A retrograde Venus at birth is read as slower, more private charm: you may revise your image often or take time to show affection. The house themes of self and presentation stay the same.
Does Venus in the 1st house mean Taurus or Libra rising?
No. Venus rules both signs, so with either one rising she rules your ascendant, but she can stand anywhere in the chart. The house is where she sits; rulership is a separate matter.
What does it mean if a partner's Venus is in my 1st house?
Astrologers read it as admiration: the partner makes you feel seen and appreciated early on. The aspects between the two charts say whether it lasts.
Where will I meet my partner with Venus in the 1st house?
A natal chart cannot name a place. Astrologers link the 1st house with being the one who initiates, so some read it as meeting people through your own activity rather than by arrangement. Check a year with the solar return calculator if you want to see where Venus falls in a given year.

How often does Venus land in the 1st house?
We ran 35,064 New York dates from 1930 to 2025. Venus landed in the 1st house on 8.3% of them under Placidus and 8.4% under Whole Sign. Both systems agreed on 4.1%, and of the Placidus cases 51% were in some other house in Whole Sign.
This placement has a clear clock. Venus stays near the Sun, and at sunrise the Sun is near the ascendant, so Venus in the 1st points to a dawn birth. Take only the Placidus cases: the Sun stood in the 12th, 1st or 2nd house in 80% of them. The clock times in New York run from 2:30 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. for the middle 80%, centered near 5:30 a.m. Five cities appear in the table below.
| City | Placidus | Whole Sign | Both | Typical time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miami 26° N | 8.3% | 8.3% | 4.1% | 5:50 a.m. |
| Los Angeles 34° N | 8.4% | 8.3% | 4.1% | 5:20 a.m. |
