Princess Diana Birth Chart

Princess Diana's birth chart uses 7:45 p.m. on July 1, 1961, at Park House on the Sandringham estate, the time her mother gave and Buckingham Palace confirmed in writing. It shows a Cancer Sun, an Aquarius Moon and Sagittarius rising.

When her engagement was announced, a different time, 2:00 p.m., was published first. The two times give different charts, and astrologers settled on the 7:45 p.m. one.

The Moon in Aquarius at 25°02′, in the 2nd house, is where astrologers begin with this chart, reading it as a need for distance and independence beneath a Cancer Sun that leans toward home and family. Sagittarius rising is ruled by Jupiter, which stands in the same sign as the Moon, so astrologers see a common thread between them.

Diana Frances Spencer, daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer, married Charles, then Prince of Wales, on July 29, 1981, and was the mother of Princes William and Harry. She became known worldwide for her charity work. She died on August 31, 1997, in Paris.

A letter from Buckingham Palace

Astro-Databank grades it A, the grade for a family source. In a letter dated April 13, 1981, Buckingham Palace replied to the astrologer Charles Harvey that the time came from Diana's mother: 7:45 p.m. The astrologer Nick Campion later wrote that the engagement announcement had first given 2:00 p.m. and that the time was then corrected. Her astrologer Debbie Frank used 7:45 p.m. and said Diana insisted she was born in the evening.

At 2:00 p.m. Libra was rising and Cancer was on the midheaven. At 7:45 p.m. it is Sagittarius rising with Libra at the midheaven. The Sun and Moon are the same in both.

An Aquarius Moon in a T-square with Venus and Uranus

At 25°02′ of Aquarius, the Moon never left that sign on July 1, so either birth time gives it. It forms an opposition to Uranus in Leo and a square to Venus in Taurus, and Venus squares Uranus as well, so the three make a T-square, a shape astrologers read as built-in tension.

Astrologers link the Moon in Aquarius with feelings that need room and a cause. Uranus opposite it is linked with sudden change, and Venus in Taurus, in its own sign, with attachment and comfort. Jupiter, also in Aquarius, joins the Moon in the 2nd house.

Cancer Sun in the house of partners

Her Sun is at 9°40′ of Cancer, in the 7th house with Placidus, the house tradition assigns to marriage and open partnership. Mercury, retrograde, is in Cancer and the 7th as well. With Whole Sign houses both move to the 8th.

The Sun makes a trine to Neptune in Scorpio, 1°02′ from exact. Cancer is read in the tradition as caring and protective, and a trine between the Sun and Neptune as sympathy and a sense of other people's needs.

Sagittarius rising, Saturn just behind it

At 7:45 p.m. the ascendant is at 18°25′ Sagittarius. Saturn, retrograde in Capricorn, sits in the Placidus 1st house, a planet the tradition reads as duty and restraint placed near the self. Sagittarius rising on its own is read as open and outgoing. The midheaven is in Libra, at 23°03′ Libra, a sign linked with diplomacy and public grace.
