What Venus retrograde means

Venus does not reverse. Seen from Earth it slows, stops, drifts backward against the stars for about six weeks, then stops again and resumes. It happens roughly every 19 months, when Venus passes between Earth and the Sun. The backward motion is a trick of the viewing angle.

Astrology reads Venus as the planet of love, money and taste. A retrograde is a time to look again, at relationships, at spending, at what you value, rather than a time to start something new. Tradition says old flames and old money questions come back around, and that second thoughts about a commitment are normal now. Nothing is forbidden. The advice comes down to going slowly and asking the question twice.

The sign adds a theme. In 2026 Venus turns in Scorpio, the sign tradition ties to trust, intimacy and shared money, where Venus works less comfortably, then backs into Libra, the sign of partnership and fairness that Venus rules. Venus retrograde 2026, step by step

In 42 days Venus backs up about 16 degrees. After it turns direct it has to cover that ground again before it reaches new sky, and it gets there on Dec 15, 2026. That date closes the shadow. Midway, on Oct 24, 2026, Venus passes between Earth and the Sun at 0° Scorpio. Astrologers treat that day as the midpoint of the retrograde.

The Venus retrograde shadow period

The pre-shadow starts when Venus first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct. The post-shadow ends when it passes the degree where the retrograde began. Venus's shadow runs a little over a month on each side, so the 2026 shadow lasts 106 days from Aug 31 to Dec 15, with the 42 retrograde days in the middle.

Astrologers who use it read the first weeks as a preview of the themes and the last weeks as the time to settle them. The weight stays on the six retrograde weeks; the shadow is a softer version of the same advice.

Venus and Mercury retrograde together

This autumn two planets run backward at once. Mercury turns retrograde on Oct 24, 2026 and direct on Nov 13, 2026. Venus is already retrograde when Mercury joins, and it turns direct the next day. For 20 days both are backward.

Which signs Venus retrograde affects in 2026

The usual rule among astrologers: a retrograde is felt most in the signs it passes through, in their opposites, and in the signs the planet rules. Venus rules Taurus and Libra.

• Oct 3 to Nov 14: Scorpio and Libra most of all, then Taurus and Aries on the opposite side. Taurus and Libra, the two signs Venus rules, are both on the list.

The rule counts your Moon and rising sign too, so you can feel a retrograde "in your sign" with your Sun elsewhere. Which birthdays get the closest contact

Venus covers 16 degrees of sky three times: forward, backward, forward again. The stretch runs from 22° Libra to 8° Scorpio. Anything of yours sitting at those degrees gets three passes from Venus instead of one, which astrologers count as the stronger contact.

The Sun is in the stretch from Oct 16, 2026 to Oct 31, 2026. If you were born in those weeks, your Sun sits inside it. The date moves by a day between years, so check your own year in the calculator. A Mercury, Mars or other planet at those degrees counts the same way, whatever your birthday.

What not to do during Venus retrograde

The traditional list stays inside Venus's territory: love, looks and money. Astrologers advise against starting a relationship you are unsure of, picking a wedding date if you can choose another, a drastic haircut or color change, a new tattoo, and big purchases of jewelry or luxury items you cannot return. The reasoning is that you may see it differently once Venus turns direct on Nov 14.

What tradition recommends is the "re-" list: reconnect, reconsider, repair. If an ex writes, the tradition says a reply can wait until you have thought about what you want from it. It also suggests sorting out debts and subscriptions you have been ignoring.

Natal Venus retrograde: were you born with it?

In our count of 35,064 birth dates from 1930 to 2025, 2,528 fall in a Venus retrograde, 7.2% or about one in 14. Astrologers read a retrograde Venus in a birth chart as a person who loves on an inner schedule: feelings get reviewed before they are shown, and past relationships get revisited. It is a description of style, not a verdict on your love life.
