What the 5th house gives Venus
Counted from the ascendant, the 5th house is the fifth slice of the chart. Tradition gives it romance, parties, games, children and creative work: everything done because it is enjoyable and not because it is required. Venus brings taste and the wish to be liked. Together they describe someone for whom pleasure is part of the plan, whether that means a long dinner with friends, a hobby kept up for decades or the first weeks of a new attachment.
In the modern scheme Leo, the sign of the Sun, goes with the 5th, which gives the house its showy side: performing, being noticed, giving a gift with a flourish. Venus is gentler than the Sun, so the result is charm that wants to delight rather than dominate.
The 5th is not one of the four angles (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th), the places tradition ranks as strongest. A planet here works more quietly than one on the horizon or the meridian. A Venus that is happy where she sits does not need the spotlight.
Counting differs by system. Whole Sign counting makes it the fifth sign from your rising sign. In Placidus the house begins at a cusp worked out from your birth time and place, and it can start in the middle of a sign.
Venus in her joy house: the case for yes
This is the best case anyone can make for a Venus placement, and it comes from the oldest layer of the tradition. Hellenistic astrologers gave each planet a house where it "joys": Mercury the 1st, the Moon the 3rd, Venus the 5th, Mars the 6th, the Sun the 9th, Jupiter the 11th, Saturn the 12th. Lilly kept the scheme in 1647. For the 5th he wrote that its cosignificators are Leo and Venus, "who doth joy in this house in regard it's the house of pleasure, delight and merriment."
Lilly put a warning in the same sentence: the house is "wholly unfortunate by Mars or Saturn." So Mars or Saturn inside the 5th, or a hard aspect from either to this Venus, is read as spoiling the fun. Her sign still counts. Taurus and Libra give her a home and Pisces an exaltation, while Aries, Scorpio and Virgo (her fall) are the uncomfortable signs. A joy is a comfort, not a promise of luck: Venus in Virgo in the 5th is a contented planet in a critical mood.
Modern writers see a shadow in a placement this comfortable. A taste for pleasure can slide into dodging whatever is not fun, and romance can turn into a hunt for the first spark. The suggestion is to keep pleasure as one of the things you do, and not the test every plan has to pass.
Overlays and composites: Venus meets the 5th house
When one person's Venus falls in the other's 5th house, astrologers call it a romance overlay, and of the Venus overlays it is the one read as most playful. The pair laugh, flirt and plan things, and the relationship feels like a holiday from ordinary life. Chemistry here means "we have a good time together."
A common question is whose feeling is bigger. The 5th house belongs to its owner, who is the one entertained and adored, while the owner of the Venus shows affection just by being around. The reading does not weigh how much each person cares. Whether the fun deepens into commitment is a question for the aspects between the charts and for the 7th house.
Your birth time sets the houses, and their Venus hardly shifts in a day. Our synastry chart tool shows the overlay. In a composite chart, Venus in the 5th is read as a relationship built on enjoyment: shared hobbies, trips and projects.
Venus in the 5th by sign
The sign says what kind of pleasure Venus wants. Under Whole Sign houses it also names your ascendant, four signs earlier on the wheel: Venus in Leo in the 5th goes with Aries rising. Placidus can break that pairing when Venus sits near a house edge. A link closes each entry and leads to the page for that sign.
♈︎ Venus in Aries in the 5th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
Detriment sign, so romance is quick, competitive and in love with the chase. Sport and dares count as play. The old warning is a spark that burns out before the second date. Elizabeth Taylor's Venus, at 17°10′, is here, in the Whole Sign 5th. Bob Marley's, at 3°59′, is in the Whole Sign 5th too. Venus in Aries
♉︎ Venus in Taurus in the 5th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Pleasure is physical and unhurried: cooking, gardens, music, a fabric you like to touch. Ariana Grande (Whole Sign) and Princess Diana and Prince William (Placidus) have Venus here in the 5th. Loyal in love, and slow to let go of what you have. Venus in Taurus
♊︎ Venus in Gemini in the 5th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Play with words: puns, letters, trivia nights, a group chat that never ends. Flirting is a conversation, and you may keep two or three going. Variety keeps the interest alive. Megan Fox's Venus is here at 23°31′, in the 5th under Placidus only. Venus in Gemini
♋︎ Venus in Cancer in the 5th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Fun is domestic and tender: feeding people, family games, collecting things that remind you of home. Romance wants safety before excitement. Creative work draws on memory. Venus in Cancer
♌︎ Venus in Leo in the 5th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
Leo owns the 5th in the modern scheme, so the house plays at full volume: theater, grand gestures, the center of the party. Generosity is real, and so is the need for applause. Venus in Leo
♍︎ Venus in Virgo in the 5th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
Fall sign for Venus. Play is crafted: puzzles, gardening, mending, learning a skill properly. Love shows as help with the little jobs, and an inner critic can sour a good evening. Tracee Ellis Ross has Venus at 29°01′ of Virgo, a 5th-house placement by both counts, while Austin Butler's, at 2°01′, makes it by Whole Sign alone. Venus in Virgo
♎︎ Venus in Libra in the 5th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
Home sign again, with a taste for art, dancing, fashion and a dinner with a good table. Courtship is courtly and fair. A scene in public is the one thing you cannot stand. Matthew McConaughey's Venus, at 22°58′, is here in the 5th under both systems. Will Smith's, at 29°14′, makes the 5th by Whole Sign alone. Venus in Libra
♏︎ Venus in Scorpio in the 5th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
Detriment sign. Pleasure is intense and private: a secret romance, a mystery novel, a hobby you never mention to friends. Flirtation is all or nothing. Hailee Steinfeld's Venus, at 23°33′, is here in the 5th under both systems. Bruce Springsteen's, at 11°04′, reaches the 5th by Placidus alone. Venus in Scorpio
♐︎ Venus in Sagittarius in the 5th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
A traveler's idea of fun: new places, sport, games of chance, long talks about big ideas. People from far away or another culture hold the appeal. Commitment can feel like a fence. Alexa Demie's Venus, at 29°54′, is in the last degree of this sign, in the 5th under both systems. Venus in Sagittarius
♑︎ Venus in Capricorn in the 5th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Dolly Parton's Venus sits at 26°26′ here, in the 5th under both systems, and the Venus of Michael B. Jordan (5°39′) and of Steve Jobs (21°10′) is in the Whole Sign 5th. The reading is of pleasure with discipline: crafts mastered over years, plain good taste, a dry sense of humor. Love ripens late and shows as reliability. Justin Timberlake's Venus, at 25°57′, falls in this sign and reaches the 5th by Placidus alone. James Spader's Venus, at 14°28′, is in the Whole Sign 5th. Venus in Capricorn
♒︎ Venus in Aquarius in the 5th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
Playful in odd ways: clubs, gadgets, causes, flirtations that start as friendship. A romance needs a friend inside it and plenty of room. Venus in Aquarius
♓︎ Venus in Pisces in the 5th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
Exalted, which tradition counts as the sweetest form. Pleasure is imaginative: music, film, painting, a soft spot for a rescue project. The caution is falling for the version of someone you imagined. Justin Bieber's Venus, at 20°50′, is in the Whole Sign 5th. Diana Ross's, at 12°21′, is in the Whole Sign 5th as well. Venus in Pisces
What happens when Venus transits your 5th house
Venus visiting her own joy house is the transit most astrologers look forward to. It is read as a stretch for dates, parties, hobbies, a class taken for fun and creative projects played with and not pushed. Social energy runs high, and so does spending on enjoyment.
Between 1930 and 2025 Venus lingered in a sign for a median of 25 days, and the middle 80% of her visits ran 24 to 32. One retrograde loop stretched the longest stay to 126 days. On average she re-enters a sign once per 345 days. Those figures describe signs, and a sign is exactly what a Whole Sign house is; a Placidus 5th is seldom 30° wide, so there the stay can run shorter or longer.
Today's Venus against your own houses is on the transit chart. People ask most about a Venus retrograde in the 5th: astrologers read it as a time when an old hobby or an ex comes back around, better for revisiting than for starting.
Romance, flirting and the "love marriage" question
The 5th house is where tradition looks for courtship, flirtation and the early stage of an attachment, which is why so many searches ask whether Venus here means a love marriage. The reading is narrower. Venus in the 5th describes someone who falls in love easily, enjoys the beginning and likes being courted. Marriage belongs to the 7th house, and astrologers check that house and its ruler before they say anything about a spouse.
Others ask where a partner will turn up. A chart names no address. The 5th house stands for social places built around fun, such as parties, clubs, classes, concerts and sports, and astrologers read this Venus as meeting people mid-enjoyment, not through a formal introduction. Treat it as a leaning. For marriage, read Venus in the 7th.
Children, creativity and hobbies
Tradition puts children under the 5th house, which is why a long tail of searches asks about kids, pregnancy and the sex of a child. A birth chart cannot say whether you will have children, when, or what they will be like, and this page makes no claim on any of it. What astrologers read is a relationship to children and to play: this Venus is described as affectionate with young people and happy to teach or entertain.
Creative work is the second big theme. Venus in the 5th is read as artistic taste put to use in music, design, theater, writing, cooking, any craft done for the satisfaction of it. If a hobby turns into a living, that is the territory of the 10th house, covered in Venus in the 10th.
Venus in the 5th in Vedic astrology
Plenty of readers arrive from Vedic astrology. It gives Venus the karaka role for love, pleasure and the arts (a karaka signifies a theme wherever it sits) and reads the 5th house for children and creative intelligence. Its directional-strength rule, dig bala, gives Venus her peak in the 4th house, not the 5th, so she is neither at her best nor at zero. The Hellenistic "joy" is a separate measure, and the two do not have to agree.
Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, about 24° back from the tropical wheel of this page, with houses reckoned from the sidereal ascendant. A Western 5th-house Venus can therefore land elsewhere in a Vedic chart. Lal Kitab, navamsa and mahadasha searches point to separate systems that we do not cover.
Twenty celebrity charts, three ways to have Venus in the 5th
Our celebrity set holds 143 charts, with birth times graded AA, A or B by Astro-Databank, and twenty of them have this placement in three different ways. Alexa Demie, Dolly Parton, Hailee Steinfeld, Matthew McConaughey and Tracee Ellis Ross have Venus in the 5th in both systems, at 29°54′ Sagittarius, 26°26′ Capricorn, 23°33′ Scorpio, 22°58′ Libra and 29°01′ Virgo in that order. Under Whole Sign alone the 5th also holds Ariana Grande, Austin Butler, Bob Marley, Diana Ross, Elizabeth Taylor, James Spader, Justin Bieber, Michael B. Jordan, Steve Jobs and Will Smith, with Venus at 20°29′ Taurus, 2°01′ Virgo, 3°59′ Aries, 12°21′ Pisces, 17°10′ Aries, 14°28′ Capricorn, 20°50′ Pisces, 5°39′ Capricorn, 21°10′ Capricorn and 29°14′ Libra respectively, and Placidus moves nine of them to the 4th and Will Smith's to the 6th. Bieber's and Marley's times are rated B, from biographies. Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake, Megan Fox, Prince William and Princess Diana have it in Placidus only, at 11°04′ Scorpio, 25°57′ Capricorn, 23°31′ Gemini, 25°40′ Taurus and 24°24′ Taurus in that order, and Whole Sign moves all five to the 6th.
Venus is in a strong sign for seven of the twenty: Taurus for Ariana Grande, Prince William and Princess Diana, Libra for Matthew McConaughey and Will Smith (all five her own signs) and Pisces for Diana Ross and Justin Bieber (her exaltation). The house changes with the system for Grande, William, Diana, Smith, Ross and Bieber while the sign stays strong. Elizabeth Taylor and Bob Marley have her in Aries, and Hailee Steinfeld and Bruce Springsteen in Scorpio, both detriment signs, while Tracee Ellis Ross and Austin Butler have her in Virgo, where she falls. Gemini, Sagittarius and Capricorn, which hold Megan Fox, Alexa Demie, Dolly Parton, Justin Timberlake, James Spader, Michael B. Jordan and Steve Jobs, carry neither a home nor a fall for Venus. The point of the twenty is the seam: a Venus within a few degrees of a house edge may or may not be in the 5th, depending on the system. Placidus lists ten of them, Whole Sign lists fifteen, and only Alexa Demie, Dolly Parton, Hailee Steinfeld, Matthew McConaughey and Tracee Ellis Ross are on both lists. Twenty charts illustrate that and prove nothing else.

Questions about Venus in the 5th house
Venus in the 5th house: is it good or bad?
By the oldest rule, yes. The 5th is the house where Venus is said to joy, and Lilly called it the house of pleasure, delight and merriment. Mars or Saturn in the house, or hard aspects from them, are read as spoiling it, and her sign still matters.
Does Venus in the 5th house mean a love marriage?
Not by itself. The 5th is the house of courtship and flirtation, and marriage is the 7th. Astrologers read easy falling in love and a taste for being courted, not a marriage plan.
Is Venus exalted in the 5th house?
Exaltation belongs to a sign, and Venus is exalted in Pisces. In the 5th she is in her joy, a different kind of strength. A Pisces Venus in the 5th has both.
What does Venus in the 5th house say about children?
The 5th has been the house of children since the old books, but a chart cannot tell you whether, when or how many. Astrologers read affection for children and a playful streak, nothing more.
Does Venus in the 5th house say how I will meet my spouse?
It says nothing about a spouse. It does carry a theme: astrologers tie the 5th to parties, hobbies and classes, so the tendency is meeting people while having a good time.
Why does my Venus show up in the 4th or 6th on another site?
The other site uses a different house system. In the charts above, Ariana Grande, Bob Marley, Diana Ross, Elizabeth Taylor, Justin Bieber, Michael B. Jordan and Steve Jobs have Venus in the 4th under Placidus, while Justin Timberlake, Megan Fox and Princess Diana have it in the 6th under Whole Sign. Our tool checks Placidus and Whole Sign together.
What does it mean when Venus is in the 5th house of a solar return?
Astrologers read a year in which romance, hobbies and creative play get attention. The solar return chart is drawn for each birthday, when the Sun is back on its natal degree. Yours is on the solar return calculator.
Is a retrograde Venus in the 5th house worse?
Astrologers read it as a more private, slower way of loving and playing, with old hobbies or old flames revisited before you move on. It is a difference of style.

The evening clock of Venus in the 5th
Venus occupied the 5th house in 8.2% of the Placidus charts and 8.3% of the Whole Sign charts we built for New York, one per date, 1930 through 2025. The systems matched in 3.8%. Among the Placidus cases, 54% moved to another house under Whole Sign, so the headline share hides a lot of reshuffling.
This placement also has a time of day. Venus trails the Sun, and the Sun stood in the 4th, 5th or 6th house in 80% of those charts, the part of the chart below the horizon between sunset and the small hours. That makes it an evening placement: the middle 80% of the matching New York moments run from 6:10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., centered near 9:20 p.m. The table repeats the count for five cities.
| City | Placidus | Whole Sign | Both | Typical time |

Every date from 1930 to 2025 (35,064 per city), one moment of local clock time per date, spread evenly over the day. Shares of clock time, not of people: births are not spread perfectly evenly over the day. "Typical time" is the median local birth time among those moments with Venus in the 5th (Placidus).
