The 1st House in Astrology

Your 1st house begins at your rising sign. It is the house of you: your body and looks, your temperament, and how you start things and meet strangers. The rising sign, its ruler (the chart ruler) and whatever planets sit in the house fill in the details.

Put in your birth details and city to get your rising sign as the sign of the 1st, the chart ruler and a list of occupants, if there are any. The example below is a birth on July 15, 1990, at 4:30 a.m. in New York.

In our count the 1st house was empty in 46% of charts for New York births, 1930 to 2025. On this birthday the Sun stood in the 1st house from 4:09 a.m. to 5:42 a.m., local time.

What the 1st house means

Minutes before sunrise the eastern sky starts to pale while the Sun is still below the horizon. Whichever degree of the zodiac is climbing over that edge at the moment you are born is your ascendant, and the 1st house starts there. Hellenistic astrologers called the point the Hour-marker (horoskopos in Greek, the source of the word horoscope) and the house the Helm, from oiax, a ship's steering oar. Chris Brennan's 2013 paper on the planetary joys collects both names from the ancient sources.

William Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) puts life itself first. The house stands for the native's body, which his list sums up as "the stature, colour, complexion, form and shape", and for the head and face in particular. Modern astrologers keep the body and add temperament and the way a person starts things. Across the chart sits the 7th house, where the other party stands.

Your 1st house sign

Your rising sign is the sign on this house, in every house system, so the twelve headings below need no second lookup. Not sure what yours is? The rising sign calculator works it out from the time and place you were born.

Find your rising signDon't know your rising sign? Enter your birth date, time and place in the tool above: it shows your rising sign and the sign on your 1st house, and marks that sign in this list.

♈︎ Aries on the 1st (Aries rising)

The handshake comes first, a little too firm and already heading toward the next thing. This rising sign enters a room head first, and the body often shows it in a quick stride, a forward chin and a scar or two from hurrying. Impatience with anything slow comes with the speed, and so does a reluctance to ask anyone for help.

♉︎ Taurus on the 1st (Taurus rising)

Strangers notice calm before they notice anything else. Taurus rising moves unhurriedly, speaks in an even, pleasant voice and often has a solid build. Its ruler is Venus, which shows in a taste for good fabric and good food. The stubbornness shows later: once the verdict on you is in, it rarely moves.

♊︎ Gemini on the 1st (Gemini rising)

A question to a stranger arrives within seconds, and so does the joke that follows it. Hands gesture, the frame is slight, the eyes keep moving. Restlessness stays hidden, along with a second opinion it keeps to itself until the conversation is over.

♋︎ Cancer on the 1st (Cancer rising)

When the room is new, this sign hangs back a beat and reads it before speaking. The face is soft and its expression changes with the mood, like weather over water. The Moon rules Cancer, and the friendliness has a shell around it: feelings are stored carefully and released late, if at all.

♌︎ Leo on the 1st (Leo rising)

Heads turn before a word is said. Leo rising carries itself as if the entrance had been scheduled, with a straight back, a full head of hair or a laugh that crosses the room. The warmth comes with a need to be liked, so a cool reception stings more than it shows.

♍︎ Virgo on the 1st (Virgo rising)

Within a few seconds it has noticed your name tag, the crooked picture on the wall and whether the meeting started on time. Neatness is the outer layer: clean lines, tidy hands, a lean and alert build. It also has a steady habit of self-correction and a worry that stays out of sight.

♎︎ Libra on the 1st (Libra rising)

Ready smiles and a good opening line do most of the work here. Features tend to be even and pleasant, and the clothes were chosen with care. Indecision stays out of view: it says yes and means maybe, and it keeps the peace at the cost of saying what it thinks.

♏︎ Scorpio on the 1st (Scorpio rising)

Eye contact lasts a second longer than is comfortable. The gaze is steady, the body composed, and the sign gives away very little in return for what it takes in. Mars held the sign for older astrologers and Pluto holds it now, and both suit someone who keeps score and keeps private whatever matters.

♐︎ Sagittarius on the 1st (Sagittarius rising)

Laughter, an open hand and an invitation to lunch arrive in the same breath. The build is often tall or long-legged, the walk loose, the posture of someone about to leave for somewhere. Candor is the gift, and a frank remark can land harder than intended.

♑︎ Capricorn on the 1st (Capricorn rising)

Reserved is the first word strangers choose, and a dry remark is the second. The face often looks older in youth than it will later. Behind that are a fear of looking foolish and a warmth saved for a few people.

♒︎ Aquarius on the 1st (Aquarius rising)

Friendly, but from a short distance. The handshake is brief and the attention moves on to the idea behind you. Dress runs a little off the local norm, and the face in a driver's license photo seems to be considering something else. Two planets have a claim on the sign, Saturn in the old scheme and Uranus in the new, and the detachment can harden into opinions held in the name of independence.

♓︎ Pisces on the 1st (Pisces rising)

First light is the right picture: soft edges, nothing quite fixed. The sign takes on the mood of the room without meaning to. Its boundaries move, so different people may describe it quite differently.

Planets in the 1st house

A rising sign is a style, while a planet in the 1st is a character who walks in with you. For any single planet the odds of landing here are roughly 8% in our charts. Born between 4:30 a.m. and 6:40 a.m.? Then the Sun is likely here, in the hour or two before sunrise. Under each planet sits a link to our pages on it in your sign.

☉ Sun in the 1st

Others register presence before they learn your name: a steady gaze, a voice that carries. Identity and vitality sit on the surface, and you are recognized for what you do more than for what you say.

☽ Moon in the 1st

Your face gives you away. Moods cross it and people answer them before you have spoken. The Moon in the 1st makes you responsive and easy to read, soft in manner and tied to your surroundings, so others often take you for more open than you feel.

☿ Mercury in the 1st

Quick answers, expressive hands and a curious face come first. The mind is on display. This is Mercury's joy, an old teaching tied to the head, and Lilly adds that a well-placed Mercury here makes good speakers.

♀ Venus in the 1st

Charm arrives ahead of you, with an easy smile and a way of making people comfortable in the first minutes. The old scheme calls Venus the lesser benefic, and the trait to watch is agreeableness that slides into avoiding conflict.

♂ Mars in the 1st

A fast walk, a direct look and a readiness to argue show the drive. Mars here is physical, competitive and quick to begin. Old schemes list Mars among the malefics, yet it is also the natural ruler of Aries, the first sign, so this house suits its habit of going first.

♃ Jupiter in the 1st

Generous and large in manner, with a laugh and an easy way with strangers. Others sense optimism and a habit of saying yes. Tradition counts Jupiter as the greater benefic. Its risk in the 1st is promising more than a day has room for.

♄ Saturn in the 1st

A serious face and a measured pace make you seem reserved, older than the date on the license. Lilly paired the house with Aries and Saturn, so Saturn has a standing claim here. It is still the greater malefic of the old scheme, which makes the reserve read as weight more than warmth.

♅ Uranus in the 1st

An unusual look, an abrupt manner and a way of saying what nobody else is saying set you apart. Uranus in the 1st gives a person who would rather be original than copied.

♆ Neptune in the 1st

Softness and a certain blur: people find it hard to say what you are like, and you may seem different to each of them. Neptune here brings imagination and a tendency to take on whatever the room expects.

♇ Pluto in the 1st

A still gaze and a weight in the room when you enter mark the intensity, often before you speak. Pluto in the 1st gives a private, controlled manner and a pull toward remaking yourself.

If your 1st house is empty

In our New York charts the 1st had nobody in it 46% of the time. A lone occupant showed up 33% of the time, two planets 14%, and a stellium of three or more 7%. With no occupant, the description rests on the rising sign and on the chart ruler: where that planet stands shows where your attention goes first.

Who runs your 1st house: the chart ruler

Think of the rising sign as a name tag, and the chart ruler as the hand that wrote it. It is the planet holding the rising sign, called the lord of the Ascendant in older textbooks such as Lilly's. With Libra rising, Venus is the chart ruler. If your Venus sits in the 3rd house of siblings and neighbors, astrologers would say your sense of self is tied to talk, short trips and the people nearby.

Systems agree on this sign, so they agree on the ruler.

The 1st house and the rising sign: same thing?

The ascendant is a single degree; the 1st house is a whole stretch of sky that starts there. In Placidus the cusp of the 1st is the ascendant, the exact degree rising on the eastern horizon. In Whole Sign the 1st is the entire rising sign, from its first degree to its last. Either way the sign is the same.

The planets are another matter. A planet in your rising sign but a few degrees below the ascendant is in the 12th house in Placidus and in the 1st in Whole Sign. On 51% of our New York dates the two systems list different planets here. Need your rising sign first? The calculator finds it, and our guide to all twelve houses shows how the rest of the chart follows from it.

The 1st house year (ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72)

A 24th birthday with a cake and a card is, for a Hellenistic astrologer, also a change of house: the count of annual profections has come round to the 1st again. The method is old; Project Hindsight and Chris Brennan brought it back into use in recent decades. At birth you are in the 1st, every birthday moves the count forward by one house, and after twelve birthdays it returns, so the 1st house years fall at ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72.

Profections count in Whole Sign, and the ruler of the sign on the 1st becomes the planet that rules the year. With Gemini rising, that is Mercury, and an astrologer would watch Mercury's sign, house and contacts through those twelve months. It points to one house and one planet worth studying that year and does not predict what will happen.

The 1st house in traditional astrology

Position gives rank. The 1st is angular, the strongest kind of house, and it is the joy of Mercury, the planet tradition ties to the head, the voice and quick thought. Lilly pairs the house with Aries and Saturn. Four houses (the 2nd, 6th, 8th and 12th) have no classical aspect with the 1st, and old texts call them averse.

Questions about the 1st house

So what is your 1st house about?

The self as other people meet it: your body and looks, your temperament and the way you start things. Lilly's entry begins with life and the body, and modern astrologers keep that and add personality. Planets inside it show up first in how strangers see you.

Which sign is on my 1st house?

It starts at your rising sign. Type your date of birth, the exact time and the city into the tool above, or use the rising sign calculator. The sign it names is on the 1st cusp, and the same sign heads the house in Whole Sign.

What are the best planets for the 1st house?

Mercury has its joy here, the house where the old texts say it is happiest, and Jupiter and Venus are the benefics, so many astrologers like them in this spot. A good placement here leans toward ease in being seen; it promises nothing.

Is any planet bad in the 1st house?

Saturn and Mars, the malefics, get the cautious readings: Saturn as reserve and self-doubt, Mars as a short temper. Lilly went further and believed that Saturn, Mars or the South Node here left "some blemish in the face". That was his own belief about the body, and modern astrologers read these planets as traits.

Who rules the 1st house?

The chart ruler is the planet in charge of your rising sign. Older charts run on seven planets: Mars holds Aries and Scorpio, Venus holds Taurus and Libra, and Mercury holds Gemini and Virgo. The Moon keeps Cancer and the Sun keeps Leo. Jupiter has the sign pair of Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn has Capricorn and Aquarius. Modern charts also give Scorpio over to Pluto, Aquarius over to Uranus, Pisces over to Neptune. Where the ruler stands is read as the chart's main thread.

Does Chiron in the 1st house mean a wound?

Chiron readers describe the 1st house placement as a wound about the self: a sense of being the odd one out, of not looking or acting quite right. The same placement is often described as the beginning of a gift, since a person who has learned to live with that feeling can help others who share it. Chiron is a modern find: Charles Kowal discovered it on November 1, 1977. Traditional astrology never used it. Any chart program that lists asteroids will place it for you.

Does the 1st house govern a body part?

The head and face, according to Lilly, in step with Aries, the first sign. His list is a 1647 way of sorting symbols and gives no medical information.

Is the 1st house the same as the rising sign?

The sign is the same: your rising sign heads the 1st house under Placidus and Whole Sign alike. The house and the sign are not quite the same thing, because Placidus starts the house at the exact ascendant degree and Whole Sign takes the entire sign, so the planets inside can differ.

Charts counted: what fills the 1st house

One sign stays put between the two systems, the one on the 1st, so any difference lives in the planets. Our sample is a single chart for every date between 1930 and 2025, cast for five American cities. For New York, the 1st gets different occupants from Placidus and from Whole Sign in 51% of them. Placidus can also bury a whole sign inside this house, one that never touches a cusp. Expect that in 12% of charts cast for New York and 20% of those for Anchorage.

Latitude stretches and squeezes the Placidus house. Up north the Placidus 1st stands empty for 50% of Anchorage births, down south for 46% of Miami ones. The table shows the New York and Anchorage counts side by side, for empty houses and for one, two and three or more planets.
