What the 11th house means
"Friends and friendship, hope, trust, confidence" is how William Lilly opens his entry for this house in Christian Astrology (1647). Friends come first, and hope is there because the 11th is where a person puts trust in others and in a future that has not arrived yet.
Modern astrologers stretch the list to groups of every kind: a club, a team, an alumni network, a fan community, a group chat that never goes quiet. They also read it for causes you join, for long-term wishes, and for how you behave as one member among equals.
Your 11th house sign
Count back two signs from the ascendant to find it: Aries rising puts Aquarius here, Taurus rising puts Pisces. If you lack a rising sign, our rising sign calculator supplies one. Placidus often lands on another sign (our New York count: 40% of charts), so the headings below follow Whole Sign and the tool checks both.
♈︎ Aries on the 11th (Gemini rising, Whole Sign)
Quick to start things and quick to say what they think, these friends suit a group with a goal and someone willing to lead. A slow committee wears you out. You may find your people through a sport, a shared project or a cause that needs doing this week.
♉︎ Taurus on the 11th (Cancer rising, Whole Sign)
Friends are the ones who bring food, lend a tool or keep a standing Sunday dinner, and loyalty is counted in years here. Groups stay small and stable. A new face earns a place slowly, and shared pleasures often sit at the center of the friendship.
♊︎ Gemini on the 11th (Leo rising, Whole Sign)
Many acquaintances, a lively group chat and friends from circles that never meet each other are the natural pattern. Talk holds the bond. The weak spot is thin contact: plenty of replies, few evenings actually spent together.
♋︎ Cancer on the 11th (Virgo rising, Whole Sign)
Family-style friendship is the aim, and a group feels right when it feeds people, literally or otherwise. Memory counts for a lot: birthdays, old stories, who was there at the start. This cusp may keep one friend long after the others drift, and it forgives a cold shoulder slowly.
♌︎ Leo on the 11th (Libra rising, Whole Sign)
Generosity and a taste for an audience collect here. The circle is warm, and so is the person at its center, who organizes the party and cheers loudest at the game. Pride is the sore spot: a friend who ignores an invitation can sting more than an open quarrel.
♍︎ Virgo on the 11th (Scorpio rising, Whole Sign)
Usefulness is how this sign shows friendship. It fixes the spreadsheet, remembers the allergy and turns up on moving day. A few reliable friends and groups with clear jobs, such as a volunteer crew or a study circle, suit it best, and it can be sharp with people who are careless about promises.
♎︎ Libra on the 11th (Sagittarius rising, Whole Sign)
It wants easy company. Manners, taste and a gift for putting people at ease make friends quickly, and the circle is often mixed, with the peace kept by a good host. Friendships may begin as a pair, one best friend at a time, and indecision shows when two friends clash.
♏︎ Scorpio on the 11th (Capricorn rising, Whole Sign)
Few friends, held tightly, is the usual pattern. People are tested before they are trusted, and after that the loyalty runs deep and stays private. Groups with a secret or a serious purpose attract it. Mars is the traditional ruler and Pluto the modern one.
♐︎ Sagittarius on the 11th (Aquarius rising, Whole Sign)
Friends from other countries, faiths and generations fill this circle. It likes a group that argues about big questions and then takes a trip together. Jupiter, the ruler of the sign, is also the planet that has its joy in this house. Candor can slide into tactlessness.
♑︎ Capricorn on the 11th (Pisces rising, Whole Sign)
Networks are built on purpose and kept for decades. Friends are picked for reliability, often older or more established, and professional associations, where standing counts, suit the sign. Saturn is its ruler, so a friendship here is earned slowly and then kept.
♒︎ Aquarius on the 11th (Aries rising, Whole Sign)
Natural territory, since Alan Leo paired Aquarius with this house. Saturn is the traditional ruler and Uranus the modern one. Friends are chosen for ideas more than habit, and causes, online communities and unusual company come easily. Closeness can include distance: a friend who is reachable but never clingy.
♓︎ Pisces on the 11th (Taurus rising, Whole Sign)
Soft boundaries define friendship in this sign. It takes in people who need a listener, joins groups with a creative or charitable aim, and may stay loyal to a friend who is not good for it. A friend's mood can enter yours without being invited.
Planets in the 11th house
Of the ten planets, each lands here in about 8% of the charts we counted, which is what twelve houses would give. If you were born between 8:30 a.m. and 10:20 a.m., your Sun is most likely in this house. Links under each planet lead to the sign pages where we describe that planet's 11th house placement.
☉ Sun in the 11th
Visibility comes through groups. You may be the person who organizes the team, chairs the club or becomes known inside one circle, and friends serve as a mirror for who you are. The risk is leaning too hard on the group's approval.
☽ Moon in the 11th
Moods follow the company you keep. Friends can feel like family, and a week of silence in the group chat may weigh on you more than you admit. Circles that look after their members suit you.

☿ Mercury in the 11th
Talk is the glue: group chats, mailing lists, the friend who knows everyone and passes on every introduction. You may learn more from peers than from teachers, and you tend to belong to more than one circle at once.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♀ Venus in the 11th
Affection comes easily, and friendships may carry a shared taste in music, food or art, or a touch of romance. Venus has its joy in the 5th, directly across the chart, and traditional astrologers count it as a benefic.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♂ Mars in the 11th
Competitive, active friends fit here: teammates, gym partners, the group that organizes a march or a pickup game. Arguments happen in the open. Mars is a malefic in the old scheme: a strained one stands for quarrels among friends, a well-placed one for allies on your side.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♃ Jupiter in the 11th
Helpful people, wide circles and hopes that attract support are the classic picture, and Lilly noted that Jupiter is happiest in this house. That describes a leaning toward trust, and it promises no lucky friends. Jupiter's optimism can run ahead of the facts.
♄ Saturn in the 11th
Selective, slow friendship: a short list of people kept for decades, and a feeling of standing outside the group at first. Saturn is the traditional ruler of Aquarius, the sign linked to this house. Because tradition counts Saturn as the greater malefic, it reads delay here rather than ease.
♅ Uranus in the 11th
Unusual circles suit Uranus, the modern planet of Aquarius: online communities, activist groups, friends decades older or younger. Friendships can start suddenly and end the same way. You may value a friend who leaves you plenty of room.
By sign: Aries · Taurus · Gemini · Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♆ Neptune in the 11th
Idealism runs high. You may see the best in friends and join groups for a vision, a faith, a creative collective or a charity. Disappointment follows when a friend or a group turns out to be more ordinary than the picture.
By sign: Aries · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius · Pisces
♇ Pluto in the 11th
Intense bonds are the mark of Pluto here: few friendships are casual, and a group may change you as much as you change it. Power inside groups becomes the issue, meaning who leads and who gets cut off. Friendships can end completely rather than fade.
By sign: Cancer · Leo · Virgo · Libra · Scorpio · Sagittarius · Capricorn · Aquarius
If your 11th house is empty
An empty 11th describes only the sky: no planet happened to sit in that slice at your birth. We counted New York charts and found the house with no planet in 47%, with one in 33%, with two in 14% and with three or more in 6%. What it does leave open is the sign on the cusp, whichever planet rules that sign, and Jupiter, whose joy this house is.
Your 11th house ruler
A woman starts a new job, and within a month she eats lunch with the same four colleagues and shares a group chat that began as a shift swap. Her 11th cusp is Leo, so the Sun is the ruler, and the Sun sits in the 6th house of daily work. Astrologers would read her friends as people who turn up through colleagues and shared shifts. The method is general: whichever planet rules the cusp sign is the ruler, and its own house and sign show where your friendships and groups come from.
| 11th house sign | Ruler | Rising sign (Whole Sign) |
|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | Mars | Gemini |
| ♉︎ Taurus | Venus | Cancer |
| ♊︎ Gemini | Mercury | Leo |
| ♋︎ Cancer | Moon | Virgo |
| ♌︎ Leo | Sun | Libra |
| ♍︎ Virgo | Mercury | Scorpio |
| ♎︎ Libra | Venus | Sagittarius |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | Capricorn |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | Jupiter | Aquarius |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | Saturn | Pisces |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | Aries |
| ♓︎ Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Taurus |
This ruler can depend on the system. Placidus and Whole Sign name different cusp signs for the 11th in 40% of the charts we ran for New York, and the ruler follows the sign.
A crowded 11th house: stellium
In 6% of New York charts the 11th holds three or more planets, which is a stellium (some astrologers want four). Astrologers read a crowded 11th as a life organized around friends and groups: many circles, a role as the connector, a lot of attention paid to causes and to the future.
The mix of planets matters more than the count. A Moon, Venus and Jupiter group reads very differently from Mars, Saturn and Pluto, and the sign they share sets the style, as in the sign paragraphs above. Systems matter too. The two put different planets here in 53% of charts, so a stellium on one site may vanish on another.
The 11th house year (ages 10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70)
At age 10 a person enters an 11th house year, and the same house returns at 22, 34, 46, 58 and 70. The method is annual profections, a Hellenistic timing technique revived in recent decades by Project Hindsight and Chris Brennan. The count begins with the 1st house at birth and advances one house per birthday, so the 10th birthday lands on the 11th.
Profections count in Whole Sign. You take the sign on that house, and its ruler becomes the "lord of the year". For a woman with Aries rising, the 11th is Aquarius and the lord of the year is Saturn. Its use is to pick a house and a planet to study for the year.
The 11th house in traditional astrology
Hellenistic astrologers called it the Good Spirit and counted it as the joy of Jupiter, which is why it has a warm reputation.
In Alan Leo's system of natural rulership, Aquarius and Saturn belong here, and modern astrologers swap in Uranus. That pairing adds a second flavor: ideals, reform, being different from the crowd.
The 11th is a succedent house, so traditional astrologers put it in the middle, weaker than the four angular houses and stronger than the cadent ones. In Whole Sign its sign sits two signs back from the rising sign, which makes a sextile, a friendly aspect. The 12th, 8th, 6th and 2nd make no classical aspect to the rising sign at all.

Questions about the 11th house
What do the 11th house's themes cover?
Friends, groups and hopes. Traditional astrologers add trust and the fidelity of friends, and modern ones add networks, communities, causes and the people you meet through a shared interest. The sign on the cusp, that sign's ruler and any planets in the house show the style.
Is Jupiter in the 11th house good?
Traditionally yes. Jupiter is the greater benefic, and astrologers since the Hellenistic period have counted this house as its joy, the place where it works most comfortably. Good here means a leaning toward generous friends and helpful groups. It promises no luck or money. A strained Jupiter softens the reading.
Is the 11th house a money house?
Mostly not. Your own earnings belong to the 2nd house. Lilly gave the 11th a king's treasury, not a private person's wages, and some modern writers read "gains" here as income that arrives through contacts, group projects or a community. A chart cannot promise a payout.
Does the 11th house govern a part of the body?
Lilly assigned it the legs down to the ankles. This is tradition's picture of the body, and it diagnoses nothing.
What does Chiron in the 11th house mean?
Cafe Astrology ties Chiron in the 11th to belonging: you may feel self-conscious or disconnected among friends, as if you do not quite fit, even while you believe in people and the power of the group. The same source adds rejection by peers for being different. Other astrology guides say the wound's use is that this person often becomes the one who makes room for other outsiders. Chiron is a small body that orbits between Saturn and Uranus, and Charles Kowal found it on November 1, 1977, long after William Lilly wrote about this house in Christian Astrology. It spends between 18 months and a bit over 8 years in a given sign, so anyone born within one of those spans shares it, and only your birth time settles the house. To see yours you need a chart that includes Chiron, since our tool stops at the ten planets.
Are Mars and Saturn bad in the 11th house?
The old scheme lists them as the two malefics, so Mars gets rivalry among friends and Saturn few, slow or delayed friendships. Both have a constructive side as well: loyal allies for Mars, bonds that last for Saturn. Their sign and aspects change the picture, and none of it is a forecast.
Can an empty 11th house mean no friends?
No. An empty house says nothing about how many friends you have. Look at the ruler of the cusp sign and where it sits in your chart, and look at Jupiter, the planet tradition ties to this house.
Is my 11th house sign the same on every chart site?
Not always. The two systems cut the sky differently. Whole Sign takes the 11th sign from your rising sign. Placidus divides the sky by time, and its cusp falls in a different sign for 40% of our New York dates.

How often the 11th house is full or empty, by our count
A house is a slice of sky, and Placidus changes its width with latitude. At 61° N in Anchorage the Placidus 11th is empty in 49% of charts, against 46% in Miami. An entire sign gets intercepted, sitting inside this house without touching a cusp, in 9% of Placidus charts for New York and 21% for Anchorage.
The bigger gap is between systems. Moving to Whole Sign swaps the planets in the 11th in 53% of the New York charts and the cusp sign in 40%. Check which system a chart site uses before comparing notes.
