Is March 19 Pisces or Aries? The three border days
| Birthday | Pisces all day | Sign changed that day | Aries all day |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 19 | 94 (PT 89) | 2 (PT 7) | 0 (PT 0) |
| March 20 | 18 (PT 10) | 76 (PT 79) | 2 (PT 7) |
| March 21 | 0 (PT 0) | 18 (PT 10) | 78 (PT 86) |
Number of years out of 96, 1930 to 2025, US Eastern time; Pacific time in brackets. Every other day of March was the same sign in all 96 years in both time zones.
Your birth year. In US Eastern time the Sun entered Aries on March 19 in these 2 years: 2020, 2024; on March 21 in these 18 years: 1930, 1931, 1934, 1935, 1938, 1939, 1942, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1951, 1955, 1959, 1963, 1967, 1971, 1975, 1979. In every other year from 1930 to 2025 it entered on March 20. In each year the day of the change is split: every March birthday before it was Pisces all day, every one after it Aries all day. In Pacific time the change came three hours earlier on the clock. The calendar above gives the exact minute for your year.
The 19th is nearly always Pisces: the Sun was still in the sign at midnight in 94 years, and left earlier in just 2. The 20th is the day that matters, because Aries began inside it in 76 years, against 18 that stayed Pisces and 2 that began as Aries. The 21st began in Aries in 78 years and carried the crossing in 18.

March Pisces: born March 1 to 20
March Pisces close out the sign, born as winter ends. The tradition makes Pisces mutable water, which Jupiter ruled in the old scheme and modern astrologers give to Neptune. Venus is exalted here and Mercury sits in detriment and fall, so astrologers picture imagination and tenderness ahead of fine print.
No March date is first decan at noon. Days one to ten belong to the second decan, Jupiter's in the table of faces and the Moon's in the modern list; the last ten days of the sign go to the third, Mars's in the faces and Pluto's in the modern list. Pisces reaches 10° around March 1 in only 16 years; in the other years it got there in February. The 20° point lands on March 10 for 76 years.
March Aries: born March 21 to 31
March Aries open the zodiac year. The Sun reaches 0° Aries at the equinox, and the tradition counts the Sun as exalted in Aries. Aries is cardinal fire under Mars: direct, quick to begin, impatient with delay.
The first decan is Mars's in both the faces and the modern list, so for most of March the sign and its decan share a ruler. Only March 31 reaches the second decan, which both lists give to the Sun. Aries reaches 10° on March 30 in 72 years and on March 31 in all the others.
March birthdays by decan
A decan is a 10° third of a sign, about ten days of the calendar. This is where each March birthday falls, with the Sun's position at noon:
| Born | Decan | Ruler (classical faces) | Ruler (modern) |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 1–10 | ♓︎ Second decan of Pisces | Jupiter | the Moon |
| March 11–20 | ♓︎ Third decan of Pisces | Mars | Pluto |
| March 21–30 | ♈︎ First decan of Aries | Mars | Mars |
| March 31 | ♈︎ Second decan of Aries | the Sun | the Sun |
Most common decan at noon US Eastern time, 1930 to 2025. Days where the answer changed with the year: March 10, March 20, March 30. Classical rulers from the table of faces (Chaldean order, as in Lilly's Christian Astrology); modern rulers as listed in Wikipedia's "Decan (astrology)".
Why the Pisces–Aries change moves from year to year
The equinox, when the Sun enters Aries and spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere, has slid earlier through the calendar. The 21st saw 6 crossings in the 1930s, then 2 in the 1960s, and none after 1979. The 19th had no crossing at all until 2020; the 2020s have 2 such dates, 2020 and 2024. In the 2010s the equinox fell on the 20th in all 10 years.
February 29 falls just before the equinox, so each leap year starts its four-year run early, and the two March 19 dates are both leap years. After that the moment creeps about six hours later each year. A Pacific clock shows it three hours sooner, which adds up to 7 Aries starts on the 19th in Los Angeles against 2 in New York, and 10 on the 21st against 18.
In 2026 Aries began on March 20, which was 10:45 a.m. by East Coast clocks and 7:45 a.m. by West Coast ones. In 2027 it begins later on that same date, near 4:24 p.m. in New York. In 2028 it flips back to the evening before: 10:17 p.m. on Mar 19, 2028, so a birth that night is already an Aries.

Pisces and Aries side by side: symbol, element, ruler
| ♓︎ Pisces | ♈︎ Aries | |
|---|---|---|
| Symbol | ♓︎ Fish | ♈︎ Ram |
| Element | Water | Fire |
| Quality | Mutable | Cardinal |
| Ruler | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Mars |
| Opposite sign | Virgo | Libra |
| Place in the zodiac | 12 of 12 | 1 of 12 |
Mutable water turns to cardinal fire, so the month moves from a sign that absorbs to one that acts. Their rulers sit far apart: Jupiter and Neptune on one side, Mars on the other. The Fish drift with the current and the Ram goes straight ahead. The tradition ties that hand-off to the equinox, where the Sun passes from the last sign of the zodiac to the first.

Pisces and Aries in love
Pisces and Aries meet at the zodiac's seam, a semisextile with nothing shared in element or mode. The tradition expects a gentle Pisces and a forward Aries to misjudge each other early: Pisces hears bluntness where Aries means honesty, and Aries hears vagueness where Pisces means tact. They do best when Aries slows down and Pisces names what it wants.
Pisces finds its element-mates in Cancer and Scorpio, and Aries in Leo and Sagittarius. Complements cross the elements: water with earth gives Pisces Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, and fire with air gives Aries Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. A match built on Sun signs is a place to start; the rest of two charts can redraw the picture.

Is March 19 Pisces or Aries?
Pisces almost always. 94 of 96 years stayed Pisces to midnight; only 2020 and 2024 saw the Sun enter Aries late that evening.
Is March 20 Pisces or Aries?
It turns on the hour of birth. The crossing fell inside the date 76 times out of 96, and the other years split into 18 all-Pisces and 2 all-Aries.
Is March 21 Aries?
Usually, with 78 of 96 years starting the day there. The 18 exceptions all came before 1980.
