Zodiac Signs by Month

Zodiac signs by month means the two signs that share each calendar month: the Sun moves into a new sign between the 18th and the 24th of every month, so each month starts in one sign and ends in the next. The table gives the days that are one sign in every year and the border days, where your birth year and hour decide.

Each month in detail

Average number of days of each month under each sign, counted to the minute in US Eastern time, 1930 to 2025.

Border days: when the year and hour decide

Seven months have two border days and five have three: January, March, June, October and November. The earliest border days of the year are February 18 and February 19; the latest are October 22, October 23 and October 24. The Sun does not move through the zodiac at an even pace, so the signs differ in length and the change does not land on the same date each month.

A border day is a date when the Sun entered the new sign during the day in at least one year from 1930 to 2025, in US Eastern or Pacific time. On those dates a birth in the morning and a birth at night can belong to different signs. Every other day of the year was the same sign in all 96 years, so the date alone gives the answer.

Every border date has its own page with the minute of the change for each year from 1930 to 2030: zodiac sign dates by year.

Questions about zodiac signs by month

What are the zodiac signs by month?

January: Capricorn, then Aquarius. February: Aquarius, then Pisces. March: Pisces, then Aries. April: Aries, then Taurus. May: Taurus, then Gemini. June: Gemini, then Cancer. July: Cancer, then Leo. August: Leo, then Virgo. September: Virgo, then Libra. October: Libra, then Scorpio. November: Scorpio, then Sagittarius. December: Sagittarius, then Capricorn.

Why does each month have two zodiac signs?

The signs follow the Sun, not the calendar. The Sun changes signs between the 18th and the 24th of each month, so every month holds the end of one sign and the start of the next.

Which months have three border days?

January, March, June, October and November. In each of them the Sun entered the new sign on three different dates over the years 1930 to 2025.

Do I need my birth time to know my zodiac sign?

Only if you were born on a border day. On the other days of the year the sign was the same in every year from 1930 to 2025, whatever the hour.

What is the rarest birth month?

In US births from 2000 to 2014, counted per day so that short months are not penalized, the three months with the fewest births were January, April and March. January averaged 10,909 births a day against 11,999 in September.

What zodiac sign starts the year?

On the calendar, Capricorn: January 1 is always Capricorn. In astrology the zodiac starts with Aries, the sign the Sun enters at the March equinox.
